I think it has to do with lots of East Asian cultures Butterfly/Moth represent the ephemeral fleeting temporality of life. Often in the myths Butterfly/Moth are messengers of Death Spirits. So while in European Cultures having a Butterfly land on someone (usually a young woman) represents the person being kind and gentle; in contrast in East Asia the same event means the person is destined to die young/soon.

I said this in the previous episode with all of the "pets" that became dangerous but I feel it deserves repeating. A little bit of insight is more dangerous than complete ignorance. A fish listens to Divine lectures attains enough power to take on a humanoid form and decides you know what I'm going to get revenge for all the fish that have ever been eaten by eating children from a very specific village. A bull that was the pet of "The greatest intellectual mind" steals a few handy train kits and skips off from heaven. A scorpion listens to the Buddha himself gets a little snippy stings him and then runs away and ends up becoming a demoness that even the Buddha fears. Each of these proves that just a little bit of knowledge or a little bit of power is extremely dangerous when not handled correctly.
@omargoodman2999
@omargoodman2999 Жыл бұрын
"A little knowledge is a dangerous thing... so drink deep." Basically the Dunning-Kreuger effect in a nutshell. And compounded by these all specifically being *animals,* so they run on animal instinct rather than human thinking. So they get enough Enlightenment from their respective masters/tutors to gain power, but not enough to gain the human reason to control it because they were too impulsive to sit still long enough for the full course. Ironically, Wukong is in a similar category, being, after all, an _animal._ But he had enough desire and motivation to learn the end-goal (immortality) from his Taoist master and, so, he at least got far enough in the teachings to be a little more than just a super-powered animal running on nothing but instinct. He's a super-powered animal running on about 85-90% instinct and 10-15% higher reason... but that's better than nothing. And now he gets the added bonus of continually being exposed to the positive influence of Kwanyin, Buddha, Lao Tsu, Tripitaka, etc. that he can gradually become even more reasonable, maybe making it all the way to 20-25% reason. For a monkey... that's an accomplishment.

First of all, to answer your question, "Ya like Jazz?" is a meme from DreamWorks' _Bee Movie._ Secondly, I was so scared for a minute that drinking from the river was going to turn Tripataka and Pigsy into woman, a gender swap episode. 27:15 As someone who is openly Asexual and presents as cis-male, this is regrettably accurate. You're more likely to see this happen to asexual women, but it happens to us guys as well. A lot of Allos (short for Allosexuals, which basically means anyone not on the Asexual spectrum) seem to hear "I experience little or no sexual attraction at all" as "I don't like sex" and get strangely offended by it. It gets really annoying. Especially since the "you just haven't been with the right man/woman/person" implies either 1) they think the right person will "fix them", which is problematic for so many reasons, or 2) that you can only really be interested in "The One", which oddly enough describes something like Demisexuality, which is part of the Asexual spectrum. And then there's the people who assume that anything that isn't heterosexual is automatically homosexual and obsessed with sexual gratification, which as a sex adverse asexual who is romantically attracted to women (yes, sexual and romantic attraction are different things, it's annoying how often I have to point that out) I find a bit confusing. That's like the opposite of what I am. Weirdos.

Welcome to the episode where we are reminded of the fact that YES, Sun Wukong is a king and has been for _centuries_ - he knows how to handle delicate politics, and has established and maintained alliances with countless other powerful demon kingdoms in the past. Reading this part in the book was so neat because we actually got to hear him analyse the whole situation and correctly predict how the court and queen would act with their proposal, and how best to navigate that situation with minimal trouble. It's always really cool when we get a glimpse of his political expertise. It's a skill of his that often goes overlooked.

Now some monks do have adult encounters, it's normally not encouraged as those kinds of things tend to lead to Earthly Attachments, which is what you are trying to avoid in Buddhism (I'm not Buddhist, this is my basic understanding, but if I'm wrong and someone knows better, please correct me). 4) All this talk of Cathaders reminds me of the season 1 finale of SAO Abridged. So a bit of interesting clarification to the second story with the princess and Tak. In the book, it’s noted that in a previous life Tak and the princess’s were two people who truly loved and cared and yearned for one another but could never be due to circumstance. However, they promised one another that on their resurrection, they would seek eachother out and would be together properly married, happy and together. However, here’s the problem. In their resurrection, Tak was born in the path of becoming the special monk who would go on the path of enlightenment to the west. And the princess was born a princess of a kingdom. Two social status apart and two roles in life that could never be together. Throughout the story the Princess try’s to overcome this, hoping that Tak would remember who she was and that they could have that happy union. Tak is understood to know who she is somewhat and actually forces himself never to look at her face their entire time meeting as he knows he’ll collapse and fail as a monk should he. As he would break and would marry her. As such, the story is in many ways the biggest challenge for Tak as he must overcome what many consider the greatest challenge of Buddhism in finding enlightenment. Love. As such, throughout the story Tak knowing truly that this is his one true love, most force himself not to fail and marry her even tho he knows he wishes to so dearly. And it is only at the end just before the deamon captures him does he catch her face and actually begins to cave but is snatched away. And this is why the princess is also extremely ok with everything. As she knows that truly Tak did love and remember her, and it was due to their places in this new life that they could not be together and not that he didn’t love her.

Told ya you'd love this. Also, about the demon thing: you ever heard the phrase "A little knowledge is a dangerous thung, so drink plenty?" They're basically that. See: the idea is that the knowledge and wisdom of Gautama Buddha and his Boddhisatvas is powerful enough to give greater knowledge to the thinking creatures of the world, including their pets. It's basically like how Karl Marx took a lot of his philosophies from Friedrich Nietzsche. It's THEM who want to enact evils for different reasons (the goldfish for vengeance, the Rhino for battlelust, and the Scorpion because they're all bastards from birth to death), and the teachings of buddhist mentors is what they use to gain the power they want to enact said evils. In this, being a Demon is not so much a physical form but rather a state of being.

Honestly, this episode made me convinced that "The Journey to the West" was a D&D campaign that one of the players recorded and distributed to others. Because the first story here would be/was definitely a world building explanation for an all woman empire that became the plot of the session. As for the Agartha chapter of FGO, I heard that the Sole Writer of that chapter is no longer aloud to write anything for the game unsupervised.

10:23 I believe that the hot towels is refering of the delivery scene. I do not know how exactly it is done, but it is implied in many places that in ancient China, hot water and towels are needed when midwifes are doing their job (probably for providing warmth and cleaning up the blood, maybe even a way of sterilization if the water was boiled), and an obstructed delivery is often described as "a lot of hot water have been consumed and the baby is still not born"

Oh! Since the next episode you’ll be up to date with JTTW, I suggest checking out OSP’s ‘di-VINE Journey to the west’. Two short but funny vids. (I don’t think you need CC for them, but if you ever watch the ones for like the Greek gods it might be helpful. I think almost all vids they have have CC)

Will I ever stop pointing this out? ...nah. Airier: [...] one of the oldest books [...] Journey to the West: written at some point in the late 16th century, published in 1592 CE. Classic of Poetry (one of the oldest Chinese literary works): dating from somewhere between the 11th and 7th century BCE, roughly 23 to 27 centuries older than Journey to the West. Epic of Gilgamesh: earliest sources are from the 21st century BCE, though it wasn't until the 18th century BCE that the independent stories were put into a coherent narrative; either 34 or 37 centuries older than Journey to the West.

It's kinda funny how a century old chinese novel somehow has a part in its story that reads like it represents more progressive views that can be considered controversial in our modern days... really shows just how "far" humanity has actually developed... Also, I know that most of Japans depictions of Tripataka/Xuanzang are female because there's one super popular movie where he was played by a woman, but after learning of this part of the story, I'd like to imagine their adventures through the land of women also played a part in this (the pregnancy, of course, and that'd also fit with interpretations like in Digimon, where their interpretation of Pigsy is also feminine, and then there's Tripataka generally being described as attractive-looking... in a country with no men... and him and the queen both being women wouldn't be a problem with the water either...), even though it... most likely didn't, and if I read the actual texts would probably more so speak against that interpretation. btw, next episode is gonna have a part that was the inspiration for probably at least the early parts of DBZ... it's also gonna be the last for now, probably for about a year...

While I don't comment on politics, I will note that views on anything change a Lot depending on where and when you are. In ancient Sparta for example, it was considered normal for sexual relations with fellow warriors in training which required an adjustment period after finishing training and getting married to start the next generation. And I'm pretty sure multiple other Greek city states at the time viewed hetro sexuality as immoral if necessary.

Yup, hot towels are used to ease pregnancy pains. And there’s is quite a lot of pain, because during pregnancy the fetus is literally STEALING PARTS OF THE MOTHER’S BODY TO BUILD ITSELF. Organs wither, bones become porous and brittle, and the immune system weakens as pieces of all of them get siphoned into the womb. It often does permanent damage to the mother.

The throwing sewage into the rivers is more of a European thing as far as I know. Most other civilizations knew not to do that. Also, I don’t know much about Buddhism, but I do know some monks take vows of celibacy, hence his discomfort this whole episode. Pretty sure he’s ace, but it’s also meant to show his virtue, that he’s so devout that even an Empress can’t tempt him nor demon coerce him. The metaphor is also shown by the fact the demon didn’t force herself on him, because she was trying to tempt him.

I'm sure other civilizations had to deal with unclean water given how prevalent boiling water for tea is in the east. I think it was more a matter of if your water came from a clean source, if if your source was down river from a city...

@@MrSasunaru101 (mild spoilers ahead. I'll try to keep it vague, but still, "spoiler warning" just in case xD) . . . . . eh, the story is still unfolding. We are just getting into the past stuff, so I'm sure Wukong will get a chance to work things out with his past companions. (Or not, who knows.) But we will defenitely get his side of the story, or at least a reliable source for what happened, since Azure is a HIGHLY unreliable narrator and it is verry clear that SOMETHING is off about the info he gave. If intentionaly or unintentionaly is yet to be seen. (Condidering where Wukong is curently trapped...we might even get the closest and most reliable look at his past possible thanks to the scroll) The most reliable narrator we had so far was Macaque, and even he isn't 100% reliable becouse the info he gives is vague and clouded with emotions. Other than that? It's not like the critic other characters like Mei, Mk and Nezha throw at Wukong is inacurate. But that's what makes his character and the interactions with others intruiging! Story would be only halfe as interesting if they would portray Wukong as a "flawless hero and pineacle of wisdom" just becouse he finished the journey in the past. This is a character that lived in isolation for centurys, after having burndd all bridges to his pre-journey companions, and aparantly loosing his jouney companions to time. He screwed up in the past, still screws up in the present becouse of that, and it is interesting to watch how he grows from that! At least to me xD (I think it also fitts pretty well considering og journey to the west Wukong was a methaphor for the "monkey mind", which as far as I know can be seen as a "restless mind". Pretty fitting for a character that get's currently hunted by his past mistakes. )
