I Was Wrong About Cross Fountain Pens!

Cross Verve Platinum and Radial Chrome fountain pen introductions.

I've had both the pens you show here, though I gave away the chrome one. Fantastic with nibs by Pilot. The one thing to be careful with these is the clip, its a bit delicate and not very functional either though gorgeous

Appreciate this review. Yeah, Cross is...different. I picked up a couple early in my FP collection days but found fault with some of their QC (minor issue, like the trim ring at the bottom of the gap was always coming loose etc), ink flow was Ok, nibs, while gold, were nails so I left cross behind. I finally picked up a Peerless 125 a few years ago which has a Sailor nib and suddenly I had a Cross pen I love! If the Verve you show here has a bona fide Pilot nib, my interest would grow even more. I thought this pen was very reminiscent of the Pilot sterling pens (in shape, nib etc).

Cross is a sleeper pen manufacturer. The two best pens I own are a Peeless 125 and a Townsend. Just lovely writers! This Verve is new to me - what a looker! I also have a Solo, which is a fine steel nibbed (Pilot sourced) pen also.

I have an idea the the nibs on the current Cross Peerless are made by Sailor?

Yes, the Peerless 125 has a gold Sailor nib. Fantastic!

If you want an 18k gold nib from Sailor, then Cross Peerless is it. You can't find 18k Sailor nibs anywhere else.

Yes, Sailor makes 18k nibs for the Peerless which are fully interchangeable with Sailor 21K 1911L or Pro Gear nibs. The feeds are different but the nib is functionally identical. Pilot makes the Solo nib. Its interchangeable with the Lucina or Ecrino.

Pretty sure the UFO look would go pretty well with my Rotring 900Not entirely sold on the conical shape of the section… to my eyes it looks a bit dissonant with the curvy body. Might need to get one to get used to it 😅
