This really was another heartwarming episode just like crusaders of the lost mark... but the one thing I need answers to now is how they past away! It's driving me crazy not knowing what happened to them. I also, really want to see how one of the parents reacted when their husband/wife died. We don't know who died first, but since they did die at a young age, I'm just gonna assume something terrible happened to one of them, and then the other was going through so much grief that he/she committed suicide just like Romeo & Juliet.

After watching the episode, I realized just how painful it must have been for Grand Pear to return to Ponyville after all this time, knowing that he probably never apologized to his daughter before her untimely death and never made an attempt to see his grand kids before or after their parents passed away. His life is pretty much almost over at his current age and only now did he decide to make amends with the Apples. This episode has so much to offer and everytime I watch it, I can't help but beg the writers for more.

I think a lot of bronies make the mistake of seeing MLP as some grand, planned-out epic instead of the season-by-season slice of life story that it is. If we got nothing but drama and backstory we wouldn't be able to focus on what lies ahead. On top of that, this episode shows that just because you don't have a story thread you want now doesn't mean it won't come into play later. Bronies need to be more patient.

i loved the episode, if its based on romeo and Juliet they did it better then romeo and Juliet. its an actual lovestory, not just to smitten teens in the spur of the moment, buttercup and brightmack had an actual developed relationship that they seemed to think through the whole way, then went to the impromptu wedding when they felt pushed into a corner. also it kinda made me have to rewatch hard to say anything, because buttercup looked a heck of a lot like sugarbell. which kinda makes sugarmac make a fair bit more sense.

I honestly think the whole "avoiding outright saying they were dead" shtick is kind of...cowardly. Rugrats talked about death. Sesame Street talked about death. Arthur talked about death. Even Adam West's Batman, the campiest and most light-hearted rendition of Batman there is, talked about death. (Not to mention all the Disney movies where characters die.) We watched a Crystal Pony King *literally get blown to smithereens* in Season 3. I think the audience can stand to hear the fact that characters die. I loved the episode all the same, but the aversion to directly addressing death bothers me when it's been done in kids entertainment several times beforehand.
@Teknanam7 жыл бұрын
I'd say Hasbro is the one that won't let the show outright talk about death due to some outdated views of what is appropriate for kids. The staff of the show has more than once stated quite frankly that they are dead or are intended to be dead when asked. Though to be fair, the episode wasn't simply about Bright Mac and Pear Butter being dead and everyone missing them. It was about who they, how they got together, and the lives they affected.
@grainneorgracequinn28887 жыл бұрын
Kenpachi Ramasama it's odd how Hasbro won't allow they to outright say they're dead. Children NEED to know about this since it may have already happened in their family without them knowing or will happen.maybe Hasbro is scared of parents' reactions even though we're not in the 80's when parents boycotted violence in TMNTS.....😑
@sarowie7 жыл бұрын
The writing around the fact that they are death might have improved the episode. Creative constrains help to better realize something. Not beeing able to directly talk about their death, clearly set the focus on their lovely back story and the theme of forgiveness and acceptance and going forward. Ending on the tree was a good summary of those feelings. Showing their deaths or even mentioning it would have changed or outright killed the mood. The hint of sadness on the other hand left a bit of missing closure, giving the last scene some melancholy. Given all that: How could I ask for more? The Apple/Pear parents being death is now without doubt canon. Yes they still could bring back their parents without technically breaking continuity... but no: The Apple/Pear parents had their spot in sun. Bringing them up or in the spotlight would not make sense. Their story is told.
@crash101257 жыл бұрын
Kenpachi Ramasama I agree, but the heavy implications is more than enough for what likely happened. I was still hoping to see some hint of death, and who's to say it won't happen in the future? So I'll keep my hopes up.
@retronax43467 жыл бұрын
There is still the possibility that they are just missing, like they disapeared in the everfree forest or something. In that case, they actually could bring them back without breaking the continuity, by saying they were captive somewhere else after disapearing, for example.

This episode showed us that MLP is right now not being that much of a show that was at first meant for kids, this shows that MLP is right now showing moments that are serious that adults understand that kids dont, this actually shows some true love yet true heartbreak of what happens to the life of falling in love that would sometimes lead to a tragic end that some dont know about, Perfect pear is right now my most favorite love story episode of my life now, knowing the tale of the apple siblings parents made me feel so much happiness that their love is so strong the same way shinning armor and cadence felt, but i also felt very sad that i teared up about knowing they died which is something that MLP has never dealt with before about the death of a main characters parents. but the questions must still be answered about how and when they died? if there does become a episode like that in either season 8 or sometime in the future then there would be a way to find the truth and seek help to bring them back and make the two families whole? seeing this episode made me mostly feel that to fix a broken heart of the loved ones you loss one must find a way to heal that wound and return that light back home.

i know but...i just dont know its a good idea to bring something that extreme to a series like this? i mean true it has happened to past villains but never happened to kind loving characters?
@GuyIllusion6 жыл бұрын
all the more reason to bring something like death into this show. kids need to know. sugar coating it will only make grief that more of a hard ache for them. killing a villain is one thing, but showing that it could happen to anyone prepares them for the inevitable "my grandma died" scenario. death isn't even that extreme. it happens to everyone. hiding children from reality is the reason so many of them are growing up to be sensitive little babies nowadays. seriously, keep this kind of censoring up, when the apocalypse comes we are all going to die. did you parents hide death from you growing up? not me, i watched Disney movies. what do we think is gonna happen when we show kids death in kids shows anyways? they at worst are going to cry about it. which is good practice. teaching them about grief with fictional characters is good, as opposed to hiding it until someone real dies. mlp is the perfect platform because it is so popular among kids and adults. they have the perfect scenario to do it respectively too, with the apple parents. it's not like we have to show every gruesome detail to get the point across. it would make for a good lesson for an episode too. "Sometimes bad things happen, but it's best to move on as opposed to living in the past".

I'm glad you liked this episode, as did I. The song is also the best song I've heard from the franchise since "I will fly" in season 5. You also bring up a pet peeve of mine and that's when a children's show tries to avoid talking about death even though it's a part of the universe. I there are two reasons for this. Reason 1, executive producers don't want parents complaining that a kid's favorite cartoon made them sad and cry. Reason 2, writers want to make sure that they talk about the subject in the best way possible so as to make people stronger than before they partook of the story. I'm extremely peeved at the first reason since I can recall several shows that addressed the subject when I was a kid and my parents didn't flinch. The second reason though, I sympathize with more since it's a subject that the writers have to have faced at least once in their lives. I also think the Apple family is tackling the issue a little bit at a time in episodes where they are looking into who they are, and I'm OK with that. What I'm NOT OK with is the scarcity. The latest children's show that talked about death head on was the episode of Pokemon Sun/Moon where Ash takes guardianship over a Litten after a Stoutland died. Before that was the episode of Jakers called "Waking Thor", which was aired in 2006, eleven years before Pokemon.

It really does feel good to have you back in the heard Ink Rose. So I want to say Welcome back and glad that The Perfect Pear came when it did. Though I get the strange feeling that Hasbro was keeping an eye on you Ink. from the reference in Honest Apple with Inky Rose, to A Royal Problem about Celestia and Luna, and now The Perfect Pear of AJs parents and lore behind them. Season 7 has been trying to make up for what they failed to do in the past seasons (well some of them at least), and I feel like they are so far doing that. Though I feel like mostly it is the shows way of saying "For those that have left, even if you don't do reviews, we hope you will give us another chance for not meeting your expectations. And for that we are sorry." almost like a Friend wanting to make up and be given a second chance.

This episode, along with "To Change a Changeling" and the finale, is a proof that things are a lot different, way more matured, since Slice of Life... Nonetheless, I had heard that this was an episode about the Apple parents, an example that you had even provided in your video as history they hadn't talked about. I felt so bad for you when I heard that, because it was... just... such a perfectly timed release that flew directly in the face of what you had just said (and I did feel that you had a valid reason to lose interest - not that anyone should even need to provide a reason for losing interest in something). Ultimately, it's one episode of many to come that, speaking honestly, aren't exactly likely to be more Perfect Pears (though that's certainly something I'd be rooting for). I'm glad to hear that it, at least somewhat, reinvigorated your interest and that, most of all, you enjoyed it. Just don't feel too pressured to get back into the pony fandom unless you really want to. :)

I'm just picturing the show staff just watching the last video with a grinch-esque grin on their face. And the "Surprise Motherf*cker" voice over playing over the episode as soon as it was released. Can't even blame Larson on this one.

welcome back....didn't take long eh.. we all have our ups and downs of the show, I know. I had doubts as well with season's 6 episodes, the roads they were taking. but this season 7 has really outdone itself so far and hard to be disappointed at the moment. and I'd definitely say that the perfect pear episode is by far the most heart warming, and for me the most home touching, episode by far. definitely one to remember. btw. see ya at Bronycon ;)

Sadly this is likely going to be the exception that proves the rule, and it may be one or two season (if ever) before another episode like this comes along.
@Thebes3427 жыл бұрын
CallMeRemy I'd say that applies to seasons 1 and 2 as well honestly. Not every episode from the older seasons was a complete knockout either. Hope I don't sound pissy, but I personally haven't seen any decline in the quality of the episodes compared to season 1 or even 2, but that's just me.

Which is in large how Good Writing works... *"If you burn out all your good ideas from the start, Then what?"* Same issue as making something all "Dark and Edgy" with nothing light.

I really only remember 1 or 2 good episodes from season one and maybe 2 or 3 from season 2. Really season 4 was when the record broke and there happened to be at least 4 exceptional episodes. 5 had at least 3. 7 has been a huge step up from 6 and has had 2 exceptional episodes for me at least and we aren't even at the end of the season yet.
@anticarrrot7 жыл бұрын
+Thebes342 I think one big difference between earlier and later seasons (besides nostalgia) is that the earlier seasons showed us a world full of possibilities, and later seasons were about either not exploring those ideas, or presenting them in the most unimaginative way possible. Even a bad episode in season 1 presented interesting ideas, where as a bad one in season 7 just reinforces "Yeah, we're never going to do that."

Yep, this episode definitely hit it out of the park. Even I didn't expect it to be THIS good! As a Star Trek fan, it was great to hear William Shatner voice an MLP character (and AJ's Grandpa no less), and this is definitely some of his most emotional acting since the original Star Trek films.

I'm glad you found something too admire about the show again Miss Rose, being only a casual follower of it all I just went with the flow but can see quite well how you felt as I do about other things. Plus you do know that Grandpa Pear is James T Kirk?

Haha talk about Karma slapping ya in the dah face Rose! 😉 Hasbro has brought ya back with a heartfelt backstory of a couple that needed to be resolved. The Apple family parents that past and this episode truly nailed three topics. Regret, Forgiveness, and Love. A CUTE 22 min lesson! Great Hasbro ya don't suck anymore!

If it helps I like your head cannon because it’s not only well done, but your video did explain one thing that the show didn’t, what happened to the parents

The bright Mac shined to let the apple bloom. (A little poem type thing I thought while watching the show.) And after watching this episode, it made season 5 a lot harder to watch without shedding a tear.... Especially the episodes "Made In Manehatten" When Applejack lost her hat... If I'm not mistaken, that hat was her fathers, and she accidentally ran over it with a lawnmower. At the time it was joked as "Top 10 Anime Deaths" But little did I know the significance of that hat until now.

I liked Mrs. Cake being involved in the parents' backstory, not just because it's interesting to see the backstory of characters you've known for so long, but also because it gives a sense that the residents of Ponyville are _connected._ A lot of the adult ponies grew up as friends, and their backstories interweave with each other. It gives a sense of a community and not just a list of characters in the same location. Also, we get a bit of insight into how pony names work!

What I like is that you admitted you were wrong, about one thing at least. I'm sure this didn't forgive a lot of the episodes you adressed in the previous video you made. The only reason I havnt watched/read your Dragon Queen story is because the concept isn't all that Appling to me. I understood everything and yet when I was crying my eyes out watching this episode(which my dad called me out on facebook), I didn't think "Ink Rose WAS WRONG" I honestly thought, "MLP just made me cry like Disney does. this can't be just for little kids any more....says the 15 year old. great video. Agreed with your thoughts in this, and respected your thoughts in the video before. May Starclan light your path Ink Rose.

Someone really needs to make a list on what episodes to watch. They're amazing episodes like this one, Important episodes like "keep calm and flutter on" and "Crusaders of the Lost Mark ", world building episodes like "The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone", Forgettable episodes and bad episodes. A list like that could be useful for newcomers! =)

This is actually the third on-screen wedding we've seen in MLP; there was also Cranky & Matilda's wedding in the 100th episode.

Being able to recognize and admit when one is wrong seems to be a talent in short supply these days, given the Internet's propensity towards being an echo chamber. Major kudos to you Ink Rose. Even if MLP is no longer your primary focus, I am glad you are staying open to covering the show's future episodes and remaining part of the fandom.

I love this episode after losing my mom in 2015 and crusaders of the lost mark airing on the day we buried her it's nice to have one of the mane six in things like this to relate to grand pear also reminds me of my grandfather he and my mom had been fighting for weeks and she had called him and talked to him he unfortunately heard as my mother was hit and t-boned by another car an artery was torn and she died in the night at the hospital 😔

Plus they had Big Mac talk more in this ^^ I melted slightly when he went back and asked Burnt Oak if they could hear more stories. The MLP staff are getting a lot more bold by putting in adult elements in this. If it were still season 1 or 2, they never would have imagined having the Apple Family parents died; maybe just visiting family. Yet here it is HEAVILY implied they are dead

I only just watched this new episode tonight and I LOVED IT. Best episode MLP has released in a long time. It was an adorable love story and it was great. I just wish they actually outright stated that Buttercup and Bright Mac had passed away because without them outright saying it, I dunno I just wonder what happened to them and if they were trying to leave it slightly open ended so they could maybe have a reunion episode? I dunno. I just hunger for more of this beautiful story now. It's so wonderful I love it, I really do. I wish my romance stories were this good.

I’m sorry, but you forgot when you were wrong about Celestia and Luna being born natural alicorns! In season six episode 1, Flurry Heart was born an alicorn, and Celestia said “The birth of an alicorn is something Equestria has never seen,” and then Luna said “It’s even Beyond even our understanding,” proving they weren’t born alicorns!
@jacobcentamore49017 жыл бұрын
Something that I thought was really cool, is how the added the "Nightmare"" Moon in the background. They could have easily "Forgotten" or not even thought about adding the moon to this episode, and it reminds us that this isn't Applejack's story, it her family's story.... Also my thought on the tree (sense this world is based off of magic) Maybe the tree didn't sprout until the feud between the Apples and Pears ended and the wounds were healed.. Obviously they'v never mentioned any of that in the episode, or even hinted, but I wouldn't be surprised.

One question remains unresolved, one that most likely won't be answered but is on everyone's minds and always will be. HOW DID THEY DIE?!
@booklover43307 жыл бұрын
My second favorite episode of the entire series, love it so much! For anyone wondering my favorite episode is Amending Fences, just because that episode touched me on a more personal level. But this episode is amazing! It might be a Romeo and Juliet cliché, I mean star crossed levels whose families can't stand each other; obvious Romeo and Juliet reference there. But the fact that the show makes this kind of plot amazing is just great to see. I love this episode so much, and hope we see more flashbacks with the parents. But yeah the Apple parents are very obviously dead, the hints before the episode, the hints in the episode. Plus the line left something to remember them by was obviously in reference to them being dead, plus with how the ponies were acting in such a way that you would when people you loved were dead. We will more then likely never learn how they died because of the rating of the show, but just to get this amazing episode is great to see, love it so much!
