The thing I love most is how they get around the "snowball" effect present in even the best 4x games. The splitting of production, limited city building sites & Orders really does limit your ability to race ahead of your opponents.
@SonesBen
@SonesBen 2 жыл бұрын
I was a bit hung up on the limited city sites at first, too. Less flexible, but it also felt a bit too... gamey? But after giving it a chance (and some thought), I've actually done a 180 on the latter complaint, and think it's probably a *less* gamey representation of how these ancient empires spread--especially in the context of a game that takes place entirely during classical antiquity. Because the Persian empire (for example) didn't appear in an uninhabited wilderness. People--and other empires, even--had been living in that region for millennia. Ditto for the Greeks (technically Macedon, since you play as Phillip II), the Romans, etc. So the Old World approach actually makes sense, thematically. You don't build brand new cities in an empty field--you move into existing population centers (note how each "city site" is depicted as an inhabited village) and absorb them into your empire. Mechanically, it is a bit less flexible than the Civ approach to settling. But it's kind of a tradeoff, because city sites as a finite resource that everyone is fighting over is an interesting dynamic in its own right, and also comes with game balance perks, as you point out.

This is an interesting point, thank you for taking the time to share it. I always found it slightly jarring in CIV how in the mid-late game all the little gaps of unclaimed land would have tiny cities squeezed into them. I'm personally not super into having to plan all your city locations out right of the bat like in CIV VI so this sounds like a nice change of pace.

I also kinda didn’t like it at first but now that I’ve got a number of games done….it’s the best, and here is why. I’ve always HATED having gaps in my boarder in 4X (civ) but often was required to found viable cities….and then you have the AI cramming a city in between your boarders in a unviable location that F***s you….I don’t have this concern at all here….eventually my boarders close up and even in places they don’t for a long time, I don’t have to worry about the silly AI dropping a city on the 2 tiles left open….

I used to hate games that restricted my city placement but after playing them extensively, I realized that having these restrictions made each city much more meaningful and fed directly into conflict. I now prefer them to games like Civ where the meta is just place as many cities as possible to where the minimap looks like a grid.
@Goblexter
@Goblexter Жыл бұрын
I found that restriction offputting at first, but that was before I played the game. Basically a complete non-issue with all the other empire-building mechanics in the game. Also it takes care of one of the big issues I had in Civ V - AI placing a bunch of cities in idiotic spots and me having to conquer all of them for the domination victory. Old World cuts down on all that late game grind. Genius game design. 10/10.

The game is complicated, I love that. A puzzle you have to learn. Some of the mechanics in the are just so sexy. Like the order system, naval system, the interaction with AI based on characters, the houses...the smaller timespan to make the story more compelling and realistic, the city building with specialists and adjacency focus, a combat system that makes sense as part of citymanagement involved in this... Each faction gives so much flavour with characters...Your leaders ambition is another impactful thing, as the bonusses are as powerful as humankind era bonusses. Have a builder leader or a conquerer and fulfill their goals and earn the "the great" title. Marrying of your daughter to another faction, giving you diplomatic advantages but, causing discontent among families causing you to have to imprison your best general, who will then escape for example.

My only complaint with the UI is the tooltips. You sometimes have to navigate around to get to details like "why does this character has a +40 opinion of me". I got used to the chained Crusader Kings tooltips, they are so good for complex games like that. edit: actually, we can do it: middle mouse button or hold shift click will make a tooltip persistent

I'd argue that city sites don't actually detract from the openness of the game. In Civ, there is almost always a best spot to settle your cities anyways. In the sense of "balance", no one would willingly settle in a disadvantaged spot. (Like 20 tiles away, in a tundra, with 0 resources, and no faith or wonders to assist.) By controlling your city sites in Old World, a player is placing a city where they would anyways. Additionally, it allows Old World to add interesting layers and mechanics akin to settling near world wonders, resources, etc... but with more attention to balance and detail based on the leader. I also think it would be interesting to force a player to play from a disadvantaged position because their "forced" 2nd or 3rd city is garbage and they have to overcome that.

My experience with Old World is that the more I have played, the more everything held together, and the more I was able to penetrate to deeper level considerations. There is a lot more that is obvious to the naked eye. For example, I had an exchange with a series developer when I asked during a live stream "Is a single luxury worth 250 coin?" to an event choice and he answered emphatically that early in the game it definitely is. The impact of all the features isn't what it may appear.

One thing that could stand to be improved: managing luxuries is not at all intuitive. You can see how many luxuries you have, and how many of those are unused, in the resource bar (it's the gem icon to the right of Training). The tutorial says that you are supposed to be able to click on that to decide how your luxuries are distributed, but clicking on it actually just seems to open up the family panel for your leader. Which is fine if you want to give your leader's family a luxury (there's a button for that), but there are a ton of other things that you might want to do with that luxury--give it to a city, give it to another nation, give it to a different family, etc.--and the buttons that let you do all those things are scattered across a bunch of different UI screens. If you want to give a luxury to a city (and you probably do, because it lowers discontent!), you have to go to that city's production screen and find the button (it's easy to miss--near the "assign governor" button). If you want to give it to a different family, you have to open up that family's action panel. And so on. It really seems like there should be a unified luxuries distribution panel, opened by clicking on the luxuries icon, where you can see all the luxuries your empire is producing, which ones you could be producing if you assigned specialists to them, and then it could let you click on each luxury to get a list of all the things you can do with it. Luxuries are pretty important, but they are buried in the UI in a way that practically guarantees that new players probably aren't using them effectively.

it's different, that's foe sure. And I find it much better than civ. It brought the feeling that I was missing in Civ and so desperately wanted. The AI is also 10x better than in Civ. It flanks, it tries to outproduce you and outsmart you, defends choke points, contests strategic sites, denies border expansion, uses units to counter other units, tries to take advantage, cycles damaged units and is able to incur heavy casualties on you. Brilliant. The prefixed city sites are also amazing, it makes perfect sense. Especially on the historical maps, which now do FEEL historic and correctly named cities appear in correct places and have real strategic and economic value. Just perfect.

I would recommend for your first game to just focus on what story you want to tell with your nation and your ruling family. Unlike Civ, optimization is not the only end goal, you can just focus on the story you want your character to go through and will be rewarded for it. Will picking Humble versus Proud for your leader make or break your civ? Nope. Will it change what narrative options you have and what events might trigger? Yes and that's kind of what makes this game feel unique.

Don't neglect specialists. This is not Civ. Just building improvements is not enough. Specialists enhance your yields and expand your borders. Try to get a National Alliance with a number 2 or 3 power. Stay out of their wars unless it benefits you. As Egypt I am in a National Alliance with Assyria ( an old enemy of Egypt) and they are at war with Persia. I am letting Assyria my partner and Persia fully commit to fighting one another. Once Persia is occupied with Assyria, I will then snipe or conquer two or three Persian cities. Right now I am leading. Military campaigns are very hard. I will not strip my cities of defense because of the Romans, Greeks, Carthaginians and/ or Babylonians can then attack me. It is a delicate balance. With two or three Persian cities you should then be able to out point the Assyrians. Throughout the rest of the game I will cultivate the Assyrians and use them as my bulldogs. If you are attacked your National Alliance partner will come to your defence. I try to get the other power to attack any up and coming rival while staying out of it. 😄 I also love the mods in Old World. Warrior scouts are great ( a mod).

@@Smenkhaare National Alliances can be hard to achieve when you are a beginner though (unless you play Carthage which I would argue is probably the best starting civ as you get mercenaries and the ability to form an early alliance). But keeping peace with your neighbors is definitely a good idea early on. I agree with you staying on the defensive as long as possible in an alliance war is vital to keep your units alive. It's not straightforward how rushing units works (the rushing mechanic of Old World might be the one mechanic I find overly complicated for no reason) so making sure you have some army at all time at the center of your empire is good. Individual armies are easily sniped by the AI (unlike Civ games where 2 units can hold a horde of enemies for decades) so having your forces in a large group is a must in my opinion.
@Smenkhaare

@@loanvlg You are spot on with your observations. Carthage is the best starting Civ. Rushing units I don't really understand it either. Supposedly you generate a lot of discontent. I feel like the game at the upper two levels of difficulty still needs balancing. I can beat Civ 6 on Deity with multiple civs. But on this game I can only beat Magnificent(one below hardest) with Assyria due to the military advantage. I feel like I am playing optimally. But like in a recent game It was turn 40 and Persia had 14 cities, and I hadn't even met them yet. I had just gotten my 4th city. That's a bit ridiculous. Other games I just feel like no matter what strategy I apply with other Civs than Assyria, I just cannot match the AI, as something is neglected. Can't build buildings that give happiness, your units that are already one tier below the AI because your science disadvantage, now additionally are down 10% damage because there is not an opportunity to build the buildings that give happiness to the cities and thereby the families. I mean I could, but then the units would be 2 levels behind, and/or I don't have enough food to feed them. I think what I need most to figure out is how to get my orders up, as the AI gets twice as many orders by turn 40 or so, and it just snow balls. Then when nearby tribes are rotating raids every turn with 4 new tribal units coming at your nearest city, it's not long before there is literally 12 tribal units on raiding party and you are trying to defend with 3, I mean you could build more units, but then you don't have the workers built to make the farms you need to feed them etc. I just feel like it needs a little tweaking as I am building the garrison and stronghold and camps as early as I possibly can in the game, and not really able to keep up consistently with AI advantages. But I have only played about 12 games so far. Beat Magnificent with Assyria in my 5th game playing overall, but have yet to repeat it with a different Civ. Anyhow. Thanks for the video. :)

In all honesty, I love Old World because I love Civ, love this time period, and even love the restrictions because everything has to be very thought out like a puzzle; however, the main reason is I'm too stupid to grasp how to play Crusader Kings even after countless guides and tutorials while Old World was easier to grasp since I was already familiar with Civ

That's because Paradox "games" are obtuse pieces of trash software that even the developers don't have a full grasp on. The only good Paradox "game" is Stellaris, and even that one fucking sucks ass compared to a properly designed 4X game.

The combat system in this game is the worst out of any 4X game and needs to be totally overhauled. I played the original release over a year ago on the Epic store, and enjoyed the game a lot. Since they "rebalanced" the game, wars seem unwinnable. The AI damage output is much higher than humans across the board at all difficulties. This wasn't always the case, especially on initial release. Back then I played at one level above average difficulty and had zero issues winning wars, but also had to be somewhat careful with combat as with any 4X game. Now I'm playing at the lowest difficulties and the AI is killing 5 of my units to every 1 of theirs, regardless of bonuses, promotions or terrain. Trust me, I've looked into this issue and haven't found a mechanic that I don't understand or whatever you want to name. The problems are baked into the game. Also, you constantly have to bend over and accept ridiculous demands of the AI leaders to avoid war as a result of the combat imbalance. It makes the early game almost insultingly frustrating. It's also completely unrealistic. Even when playing as rome with the military family cities cranking out units that should be strong, I still have to hand my economy over to the AI so they don't steamroll me. That shouldn't be the case with military civs. The devs are trying too hard to turn this game into the Dark Souls of 4X gaming and inadvertently ruined it. Edit: I've got over 1000 hours in Civ 6 and over 200 in humankind for reference. Definitely have more than my share of war experience in strategy games.

You were right the first time. I am agnostic WRT Steam vs. Epic and the game's mechanics are what they are. Every game developer makes design decisions and at the end of the day we have to live with those decisions. My problems with the game lie elsewhere. The graphics: boring. It is about as appealing as the stocks page in the newspaper. There is no eye candy whatsoever. Decision fatigue: I wish there was an "I don't care" mode for newcomers. Since it is impossible for us to predict the ramifications of their decisions, it's just pointless micromanagement. Really though it just not that interesting. There are so few micro-wins that there is no "one more turn" feeling. I hit the "why am I doing this" state long before I got good enough to enjoy it. TCLR is right, this game is a niche of a niche of a niche.

CIV 6 graphics are nauseating, the maps are tiny and it is unbalanced as can be. I played every previous CIV title for thousands of hours since 1993, when the first title was included in a games magazine - I basically learned how to read with CIV. But compared to other 4x games, there is virtually no development and evolution in this series in years. Everything CIV 6 offers was included in previous titles (f.e. flooding in CIV 2, policies in Alpha Centauri or districts in CIV 5) - there is still no Terraforming, no future tech, no meaningful ocean game play, no in-depth unit customization etc. all of this points have been solved by mods and other games some 20 YEARS ago. But this is the problem with monopolies there is no intention to evolve your product. I can only wish Old World - and for that part humankind - the best to steer up the market. Let's hope for a meaningful competitor to Paradox (which Old War partially is too) and the Total War series as well :)

Bro I have to agree with you on this one point, EpicGames is purely just bad competition. They're purposely trying to make the market worse for us consumers, because platforms aren't trying to improve to gain more platforms, they're just trying to undercut the competition.

@@9pmInTokyo While I *mostly* agree with you, Old World colloquially refers to a geographic area, not a time. Specifically Europe, Africa, and Asia. And maybe fruit basket as well, yeah definitely a fruit basket with a hand written message in braille that says "I'm sorry."
