Full enclosure is recommended for both dealing with the fumes and eye safety. They really shouldn't sell them without an enclosure. A fraction of a second of stray reflection can blind you, which makes the cost savings seem not worth it. 3:14

I was just told xTool no longer sells parts or heads for their D1 lasers. If true, that would be a deal-breaker for me, and I will never purchase a machine from ANY company who discontinues parts and support after such a short time. I don't care how good the technology, it is not worth it if it becomes a paper weight after a year or two.

I was trying to make my mind up xtool has 2 different packages I have been looking at, 40 watt laser plus the 10 watt laser or the 20 watt laser and the infrared laser kit.. not sure how much metal engraving I might do. But I dont think I would be cutting any wood thicker than 1/2 inch for project.. any recomendations ?
@michelejaeb2787 Жыл бұрын
Hey, great video. Just FYI xTool has confirmed that though they originally said the laser size of the 40w was .15x.15 it is actually .10x.15. If you shine the laser on the way at very low power you will see that it is actually a rectangle not a square.
@makeorbreakshop Жыл бұрын
Great point! When I talk about the laser point I tried to show the thickness in both the x and y. I had the power turned up pretty high so it was thicker than it really is but you can tell it longer in one direction vs the other.

I've had the xTool 40w for 6 months now and there is now a build up of crud on the module fan, with the lower wattage modules you can clean/replace the internal module fan but with the 40w, according to xTool themselves, the 40w is an enclosed unit so you cannot access the fan, clean or replace it. Since you have had the 40w for a while now what is your experience of build up on the fan, has anyone else experienced problems. XTool have not provided a solution but have offered to replace the module under warranty but that will only put off the issue for another few months.

If you have a 20w, is it worth it to get the 40w, or should you jump to a fiber or CO2 at that point?

@jakerazmataz852 Жыл бұрын
You can reduce the power on the 20w to the 10w's. I don't know if the laser gets any finer. 🤷♂
@makeorbreakshop Жыл бұрын
You would still get roughly the same laser dot size since the optics in the laser won't change. Since the 40W is using 8 diodes then it has to bounce and reflect through more focusing elements vs the 20W (4 diodes) and 10W (diodes), that happens regardless of power.

I am sooooooo angry! I paid $2,000 and went to build my rig to find out what you said…you have to have a different lower powered set up and indeed the 40w I bought and the $2,000 I paid did not come with a fully functioning 40w machine. You have to have parts from an earlier purchased engraver to make this run. I wish I had known this. Who does business this way? So now I have to either spend another $1,100 to buy parts I will put aside and not use or refund and lose some of my hard earned money. Ugh!!!!!

Yeah these KZbin influencers got you all by the balls. Why would you sell a chop saw that can cut two-by-fours in seconds for this? 😂 I have a full woodworking and metal fabrication shop, I do 3D printing and I just picked up a 20 watt laser. Using one of these to slowly cut a 2x4 is absurd. The amount of time and energy required. I could build a tiny home in the time it would take for you to break down an 8-ft 2 x 4 into 2-ft pieces.
@makeorbreakshop Жыл бұрын

@makeorbreakshop Жыл бұрын
The power still is double and I'm finding especially on the cutting side you can have some serious time savings. I'm hoping they give you the option to buy the 40w with a frame so you don't get the extra cost of the 10w down the road though.
@dangerous8333 Жыл бұрын
@@makeorbreakshop I'm sure it's faster on thicker wood, but on the thickness of wood commonly used for projects on these diode lasers it might be hardly noticeable. I'm just seeing big diminishing returns here. 20 watt is capable of 99% of what this machine is capable of. Beyond that I'm using my table saws, chop saws, and jigsaws. All faster than a 40-watt diode laser when cutting thick wood. I agree with another comment that said he's going from a 20-watt to a CO2. That's the practical jump, not 10 or 20 to 40. If I was buying my first laser I would buy a 10 or 20w and use a jigsaw if I need to cut thick wood.

Not sure if you watched the video but the things I was wrong about actually wound up being positives. And I showed what the laser dot size difference is.
