Hey, CC! I always love how you highlight pre-code films on your channel. I really have to brush up on on more. I still remember one you did about a film that took place on a city street. (During a hot summer, I believe?) I never realized how familiar I am with Bogart's older face, because I almost didn't recognize him in Midnight. I'm really excited to check out 8 Girls, Miss Fane, and Hi, Nellie as well! Wonderful commentary as always! Would love to see you do this again in the future. 👏👏👏

While I am bummed that the odd ball b-movie review is no longer going to be on your KZbin channel anymore, I have to say this is a brilliant idea. To think of how many films are passed over or on the verge of getting lost due to being studio "filler films" or don't have a major star attached to it.

Your description of Eight Girls in a Boat made me think of the German film of that same time Madchen In Uniform, which also has a girls school setting and a surprisingly sympathetic portrayal of a lesbian teacher. Jean Muir seemed familiar to me. When I imdb'd her I found she played Helena in the big 1935 version of A Midsummer Night's Dream (that's the one with James Cagney as Bottom and Mickey Rooney as Puck).

*SO* much appreciate the important work you are invested in Sydney;. Your discovery of forgotten classics, picking the links that allow us to watch them ourselves, and separating the wheat from the chaff with your reactions are all valuable. I doubt I would have ever watched EIGHT GIRLS IN A BOAT without your recommendation. and the film connected with me in many ways. For example, there is this film's title. This is a story about an individual girl, Christa. but the title implies there are different stories to tell as well. It highlights the critical relationship between her and the people in her life. I could continue but for now, I will add a recommendation to experience this film. I look forward to exploring many of these other offerings. I plan to watch the others, particularly AS THE EARTH TURNS.

Thanks for bringing these films to light. As a film buff, history lover these obscure, Pre-Code films offer a glimpse of what was considered popular entertainment 90+ years ago. I saw “Hi Nellie” for the first time this year when it aired on TCM. Recently I watched the 1930 gangster film, “Born Reckless.” It’s not the best of the genre: slow, segmented scenes some of which wander away from the overall narrative. Interestingly it was directed by the great John Ford, who’d been in the director’s chair since 1917.

A previous comment about the Trumpet Blows, mentions how funny it is to see George Raft and Adolf Menjoue as brothers. I completely agree. However, in terms of "unusual' casting it's hard to beat Bette Davis' Dark Victory (1939). Humphrey Bogart plays Michael O'Leary, who takes care of Bette's stable and has an Irish accent to go with his Irish name. Meanwhile her New York City doctor, played by George Brent, and her best friend on Long Island, played by Geraldine Fitzgerald, were both born and raised in Ireland. P.S. lt seems everybody, the critics and the general public, hated Bogart's Irish accent. He never used an accent in any film after that.

Thanks for these reviews and films. I must have seen these as a young man as the local NYC tv channels would play them all. I noticed so many contract players in all of them, especially the usual Warner tough guys. Glenda Farrell is always great . Baby LeRoy appeared opposite W.C. Fields in "The Old Fashioned Way" (1934). In 1937 Fields noted; "... I was the first comic in world history, so they told me, to pick fights with children. I booted Baby LeRoy ... then, in another picture, I kicked a little dog . ... But I got sympathy both times. People didn't know what the unmanageable baby might do to get even, and they thought the dog might bite me."

Thanks for this terrific upload, will definitely check out your top recommendations! 8 Girls in a Boat sounds so fascinating for its time; I'm surprised it's not better known. FYI, A note on both Ross Alexander from Social Register and Jean Muir in As The Earth Turns -- they co-starred in the WB 1935 production of A Midsummer Night's Dream (with an all-star cast, including James Cagney, Dick Powell, Frank McHugh, Olivia de Havilland, Mickey Rooney, and Joe E. Brown--a Must-See if you haven't watched it, the film is hilarious and gorgeously photographed); Alexander and Muir play the Helena/Demetrius couple, and are very good. Alexander was a very talented actor, and apparently WB hoped to promote him, but he committed suicide in 1937--a really sad case of a what-might-have-been talent.

Before I get too far into the video I had to say don’t you just love the early 1930s sparkly new Columbia figurine at the beginning of each movie? Since I was a kid in the 60s me and my siblings used to know we had a particularly good movie especially if it was before the sensors by the Columbia lady. The MGM lion and the earliest one which is a little later is also a little different. I can’t remember who did the Tarzan movies but I think they had an interesting beginning as well maybe you know who made Johnny Weissmuller films with Maureen O’Sullivan. That was really really good. I like your channel and I just subscribed

I have seen Midnight…but I got bored early on and stopped watching. Hi, Nellie I’ve heard of and, judging by these clips, looks like fun. The other films were completely unknown to me, so being a classic film buff, my curiosity has been piqued, and feel it’s my duty to watch them and see for myself. BTW…I like George Raft, though he’s certainly no actor and he’s not all that handsome, either. But the camera seems to like him, and he can be appealing at times in roles suited to him. He’s “watchable”, if you know what I mean. Thanks for a fun and informative video!

I only knew of Jean Muir from Warners' "A Midsummer Night's Dream" from 1935. I looked her up and was surprised that Muir was blacklisted in the 1950s as a Communist sympathizer. She was dropped as the mother on TV's "The Aldrich Family" over 20-30 phone call complaints - though there were thousands of calls wanting her back on the show. It was kind of fun seeing Clara Blandick (Auntie Em) in the clip playing a similar character as in "The Wizard of Oz". I think I'll check that one out first!

I watched three of the movies, I watched Hi Nellie, 8 Girls, and As the Earth Turns. I think they are really closely ranked with 8 Girls first, then Nellie a close second and then Earth. They were all nice little movies, I would give them like 3 or 3-1/2 stars out of 5. I read the newsletter and I really Dorothy Wilson had some real talent, she came off really believable in her role.

Talk about taking a deep dive! It's funny, I'm always on the lookout for some unheralded gem so, subsequently, I need to power through a lot of 'meh' films. People think I'm nuts because 'life's too short for bad movies'. I understand the sentiment, but nothing really beats finding that one film out of the deep, dark past that you connect with for whatever reason. It feels like it's speaking to you, and only you. It makes all the meh worth-while. I'm a little (but not really) surprised that I hadn't seen any of the films on your list. That deficiency will be rectified soon. Thanks for digging through the pile and surfacing the good stuff - just another reason why this is one of the best channels out there.

Great idea for a film marathon, and for a video I'll have to try it, though my magazine of choice would more likely be FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND. And, as for MIDNIGHT...yeah. As a Bogart completist, I have to say, it's just for us Bogart completists, and even then, just barely.

Yet another definition of "Pre-Code" is demonstrated by this survey: Women Doing Things, Or Even Just Having Opinions. The 2nd movie about the farm women is a perfect example: they're NOT content with their lot in life, and are loudly letting people know it. Tsk, tsk! And the movie about the pregnant Swiss girl? Outrageous! (TRULY Pre-Code there, especially the part where the other girls support her. After that, the deluge!😱) The only male-dominated movie looks to be the Paul Muni one, and it's telling that he's writing a gossip column under the name "Nellie". Insupportable! Man, I wish I was a newspaper-man in the 1930s, nursing a 3-pack-a-day habit and drinking Pepto-Bismal/Jim Beam cocktails, yelling, "Lishen, shee!" at various co-workers. These movies look interesting (well, a few of them do); thanks for the links! Never knew that Colleen Moore did talkies; I know her as the "original movie Flapper" from the Silents.

I always appreciate the use of Women As Humans and event of clothes-changing. To me, the lack of any sexualization in Clothes Changing is one of the great benefits that Pre-Code films brought to my attention. "Gee - women change clothes! They're not strippers, they're not seducing men - they're just changing clothes." It seems SILLY but that act - which I believe occurs almost every day for every woman - has always taken on the male's leering portent since then. Yeah... that Hayes Code... what a great protection! cough cough

What a fun idea, I enjoy the serendipity of this. I didn't even know Paul Muni ever did a comedy. Anyway, another we'll done vid.

18:12 Here's a bit of feedback, albeit unrelated to this video in particular. I watched "He Ran All The Way" last year through one of your film noir recomandations videos and it instantaneously became one of my favorite movies of all time. I went in having never heard about It before and with no expectations, so I was very pleasantly surprised.

Films released in the 30's often show their age as far as preferred acting styles that were then popular. AS THE EARTH TURNS mostly avoids that. The farming life and the problems these characters encountered were portrayed with more "realism" as it would be defined today. I, too, was intrigued by Jean Muir.

1. Social Register - Kinda heard of it. 2. As The Earth Turns - Never heard of it. Might try it one night. 3. Bottoms Up - I've heard of it in reading about Tracy. Might look at it because I'm a fan of him. 4. Trumpets Blow - Hate Spanish bull fighting, so nope. 5. 8 Girls in Boat - Never heard of it. Like to say I'd try it, but I have an odd feeling it might be a bit much 6. Mightnight - I've heard of it by it's other name. Sounds better as a book 7. Miss Fane's Baby - Maybe 8. Good Dame - Probably not. 9. Hi Nellie - Probably will watch sometime.

Re: Paul Muni doing comedy -- have you watched "Angel on My Shoulder" (1946)? After the stretch of costume pictures, Muni gets back to his contemporary roots with this one. Claude Rains (whom I adore) plays the Devil.
