Deep End is a 1970 romantic drama film directed by Jerzy Skolimowski and starring Jane Asher and John Moulder Brown.
Mike, a naive teenager takes up a job at a local bathhouse and is immediately smitten with his older female coworker Susan, while scandalized by the goings-on in the workplace. The two develop an immediate connection, whether friendly, collegial, or something else; Mike can't seem to figure which, except that Susan always seems to be the one deciding. When he dares to try to take things into his own hands, he'll find he's plunged head first into the deep end.

Turns out, the one scene I said was very loose but didn't want to use the "I" word, was indeed improvised: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGm5k5ywgtWtqs0

Deja Vu. I saw this movie in the theater when they were only one big screen and just remembered the ending. This movie took me back 50+ years to age 22. 1970. We had no cellphones, no social media, apartments with no TV. We went to movies. French New Wave. British fashion trending to bell bottom hippie. Berkeley in the late 60s-70s. The tension of sexual awakeness from conservative upbringing. Frenetic. You watch it from a cinematic view. We watched it feeling every bit of it in our guts as we were living those events in some way or another. If you needed a job in or out of university, there was the phone company, or massage parlors, or dancing in North Beach or doing porn in SF. Decades later, what a feeling of the passage of time. Older now, I caught some cinematic clues, like the forboding, foretelling, the red paint on the walls. Electrocution is the easy, obvious assumption. It's the simple, accidental, "tap" that brings the deafening conclusion.

really need to see this again, I remember feeling that some of the performances were too corny for me and certain dynamics came across as too fantastical, but once I got to that whole sequence with the circular shot and all the hotdogs, I realized I'd probably been misreading the whole thing

Totally, I was very cagey about the tone of the sexual stuff in the beginning: whether it was leering, or sarcastic, or aspirational or none of the above. Especially in this kind of wry work it can be hard to pin that stuff down. I really like that this movie that reflects the rise - and softly anticipates the fall - of the Swinging Sixties was apparently made by a Polish no name director in West Germany. It's the weird kind of cultural fusion voodoo that reminds me of Wim Wenders' The American Friend and Paris, Texas, or the Italian spaghetti westerns. Sometimes an outsider can see it best.
