People hate the character because she's a bit of a bitch and plain unlikable. When it comes to Brie Larson herself, she's unpopular because she's been a bitch about fans and critics in interviews, pandering to the culture war. She gave a lot of the same vibes as Elizabeth Banks did about Charlie's Angels, blaming all critique on sexists, which pissed a lot of people off. It's like someone pointing at you and saying "You're a piece of shit", then when you say something back, that person says "Oh no, I'm not talking to you, just that piece of shit", while still pointing in your direction.

She is a bitch in a lot of interviews, like how she puts down her costars in order to aggrandise herself, or rages about white men or sexists or this or that. She's just generally an unpleasant person, a female dick, which is a bitch. She's unlikable as a character because the world around her doesn't acknowledge it and because it's undeserved. Being so powerful and being so smug becomes highly off-putting when no one really calls her on it. Tony stark, aside from being a dude in a suit is a genius billionaire and funny, but also gets called out for being an asshole continuously and it's clear that few would tolerate him if he wasn't so useful. People think he's funny besides being an asshole, which buys him some leniency, other characters treat him like we would treat an asshole like that and noone is unclear about his asshole status. Thor is incredibly powerful and smug, but is also immensely stupid and treated as such and his ego is often played for laughs. Marvel, though, without her powers she's just a shit person, and realistically people don't play into smugness in others, but for her they do. In other words, she doesn't have reedeming qualities to compensate for the smugness besides her power, people treat her as if she is a better person than she is, and we don't have a long history of getting to know her that'd buy her the social capital that'd make the smugness tolerable. Also, to compare again to Stark, you say people love him for being an asshole, yet me calling her a bitch is wrong? You acknowledge she's a bitch by making the comparison, but you also don't like me calling her a bitch despite admitting she's smug most of the time, which is a bitch-like trait. That is part of what makes her unlikable; yours and characters' refusal to admit that she's unlikable.

Don't assume much of Carol's character just because she hasn't had enough backstory, sure, the movie felt rushed because it was supposed to be released before Endgame. Also, Carol is not useless without her powers, she's a strong pilot and her powers were only a bonus because of her courage. In the movies, The Avengers Initiative wouldn't be formed without her.

In the context of a character in the superhero world, she's just entirely uninteresting without her powers. Coulson is at least a genial dude, her without powers is just kinda annoying. Sure, but that doesn't really change the argument. I don't blame the character itself, I blame the makers of the movie for doing a poor job with her story and the studio for dragging in the culture war where it doesn't belong.

Apparently they hadn't even finished making this movie when filming endgame so that also makes it a little difficult. Realising she had been gaslighted and manipulated is a big thing, it is character growth, but coming back from that takes a lot of time and they hadn't finished this movie when filming endgame so it's hard to show the character growth after a movie that hasn't been finished yet so yes she's not really changed in endgame. She worked with what she had. She will get better overtime.

Bree Larson was just supportive of women, if it was one issue or event, which it wasn't, she didn't want any men to be a part of the press for this movie, because at that time women weren't getting the jobs interviewing the stars on their press tours, and Larson wanted women to get those jobs for this movie. It wasn't just that, though, she didn't play the game. She wasn't the girl smiling in the background some male fans wanted her to be. She showed up and did her thing, same as the men. Some people didn't like that. They wanted her smiling in a bathing suit, not being a bad ass. They were threatened by her, like they are any amount of diversity.

For the record, Korath (the Kree soldier played by Djimon Hounsou) is the same character we saw in Guardians of the Galaxy. It's just that this movie takes place in the 1990s, so by the timeframe of GoTG he's working for Ronan the Acuser instead of Yon-Rogg.

The whole issue with her being bland bothers me. She’s supposed to be a trained fighter pilot. They’re literally trained to compartmentalize and be bland. No emotions - lest you let them force you into a mistake. With the Kree also reinforcing that idea, of course she comes across bland. She’s doing what she was trained to do - no reaction, just do what you need to do. My brother is a fighter pilot and he acts the exact same way. Her portrayal is dead on for what she was supposed to be and I enjoyed it.

I think it hits much harder if you've been through anything similar with gaslighting, manipulation and her memory. I've been through those 3 things but much younger. it's just not something a lot of people understand on a personal level. the main villain wasn't really meant to be a physically strong one, it was definitely much more of a mental one.

A lot of people don't get why the end "fight" is so brief, but the whole point of it is that up until that point she's been holding back and playing by the (fake) rules the Kree imposed on her. So when he goes "C'mon, fist fight!" she realizes that she has absolutely no reason to do that. Instead she makes him into a message to the Supreme Intelligence (which, BTW, is just as much of an a-hole in the comics).

I guess I must be in the minority that I loved this film lol - we got to know how Fury lost an eye and a cat is called a Flurken, and dangerous with it! Jude Law was def a surprise, but I liked him as well. I hope when they do the second movie it shows her strengths more though. And Agent Coulston again and Maria Rambo which introduces her daughter to Wandavison. All in all? Personally? I wasn't disappointed. That's just me though :) This character is more serious than most of the women in Marvel, I liked that and BrIe as her. She gets the job done. I'm looking forward to the second one.

People whined over Brie Larson commenting on how, when Brie Larson cared more about fan reactions to "Wrinkle In Time"(which she also starred in around the same time, as the film centred around a black female protagonist)and not what some old white male reviewer said. I think her response was quite reasonable, compared to, say, Elizabeth Banks reaction when people hated her "Charlie's Angels"and she blamed men for the movie failing. However, people took Larson's quotes out of context, saying anything from "she hates men"to "she hates veterans"to "she wants to kill all men". Larson is a little awkward in the Marvel interviews as well, but so many damn people just dislike her because of the former things I mentioned. People also disliked Carol because she was "boring" since the Kree suppressed her feelings and she was "too powerful"and didn't suffer any difficulties. I feel she definitely suffers thanks to losing her memories and learning she was the aggressor in the Kree/Skrill war. Comic purists also were angry because the Skrull are usually the evil race(cause they're ugly, get it?), Ignoring the majority of the other changes from the comics across the whole MCU...

Without deep diving.... 1) There was a backlash towards the Captain Marvel movie because people were devastated after Infinity War and did not understand the purpose of introducing a totally new character in their own origin story movie between Infinity War and Endgame. Marvel was trying to hype the Captain Marvel movie by saying that she is the most powerful superhero in the MCU (which did not go over well). The general thought/worry was that Captain Marvel would be a Mary Sue (too powerful and dominate the Endgame movie/spotlight). Other people did not like what the actress Brie Larson was doing at that time. 2) Captain Marvel happened at the height of the "#MeToo" movement and actress Brie Larson was saying things in the media that were not liked by some people. 3) Within the comic book community there are two main companies, Marvel and DC, and within that community there is some toxic fandom that likes one company and hates the other and vice versa, and Marvel haters at that time (jealous of its movie success) were taking every opportunity to exploit and report about any negative related to the MCU.

Brie Larson literally portrays how Carol is in the comics. That’s her attitude. That’s her presence. That’s her. 🤷🏽‍♂️ but with the times, these people feel as though there shouldn’t be female leads or heroines to lead movies. I’m sorry, but this is just how it is. And it’s a fair case that most of the female popular character has the absolute BEST powers. Carol Danvers is a badass. There’s no way around it.

To maybe explain one angle where people might not have enjoyed this movie, unlike a lot of MCU protagonists, we meet Captain Marvel in a position of great power and strength, as well as proficiency in the use of that power. She doesn't dicover her abilities, or learn how to unlock them, the closest we get to traditional character progression(the kind MCU fans are used to at least) is taking off the nicotine patch at the climax of the movie. Character progression is how a character learns and changes over time, in this movie Captain Marvel learns that her entire life is a lie, all her friends are her jailors, and she is alone in the universe as an incredibly powerful being. These are HUGE, life-changing revelations and exactly what people are talking about when they say they want character progression. So why do people complain about it if there's such huge dramatic events uncovered? The character of Carol Danvers barely reacts to these revelations in the moment and none of them change her outlook, her personality or her drives. So when people are complaining about character progression in this movie, they're basically complaining that the character of Carol Danvers goes through a huge, emotional event and barely reacts, and is essentially unchanged from the beginning of the movie at the end, she is simply now free to choose her path for herself instead of being a prisoner. I like the movie more nowadays looking back, though I still think it suffers from what I've described above, but it's nowhere near as bad as I thought when it came out. When it came out we were right in the middle of the Infinity War cliffhanger, desperate for any sign of what happened after everyone turned to dust, and this movie just did not satisfy that appetite. If it had come out pre-Infinity War I think it would have been received better.

I'm honestly tired of origin stories, take the Blade movie for example, we don't watch a whole movie about him learning to use his powers and getting his kills, he just shows up and kill a whole club full of vampires, and since he's not a women he can do awesome stuff like that without being called a mary sue, he doesn't need a lot of emotion, cause he's a serious man, if it was a woman in the same role she would be bland and boring Then there's the real reason why this movie got so much hate, which is the hate boner people have for the character and for the actress

Blade had just as much flashback as Carol did in this movie. Only the flashback he had was more reliable. The most we have of his backstory for his character was from Whistler describing finding him. That connection definitely humanized him as well as him saving Karen when she was bitten. IMO having Maria in the movie definitely brought Carol enough backstory in comparison.

she still had emotion and it was still shown it's just not overly dramatic and not like a lot of crying and that. She's a bit more monotone, a lot like me. She shows emotions very similar to how I do and most people can't read my emotions properly. I think she's also a little bit like drax where he's extremely sad but just stares into the distance silently (remember mantis touching him and then her just breaking down while he continues staring). It doesn't mean she doesn't feel anything and it is big changes and she does react, just not as obviously as people want or expect.

Captain Marvel takes place in 1995 and Iron-Man takes place in 2008 so it actually only took 13 years to find another super hero after Carol left, although Captain America, Ant-Man, and the Wasp already existed before them.

There was lots of weird shenanigans surrounding this movie, most blatantly obvious was the whole Rotten Tomatoes situation, before they used to have a "I want to see" and "I don't want to see" options to gain a better idea of how many people were going to go watch a movie/show and how many were going to skip it, but so many people were selecting that they didn't want to watch the movie, it looked really bad for Disney! They first tried deleting several thousands of IDWTS votes, it didn't skew the needle towards people going to watch it, they then deleted many tens of thousands of votes, it made a little difference, but not enough, so they removed the IDWTS option completely and claimed that it was a planned update... it wasn't btw, so now the only option left was the IWTS option, though without the IDWTS to compare to, it is utterly useless as a method of gauging the audience. This was a two-fold thing, the company behind RT is a online ticket provider, so such mass displeasure on display towards the movie would probably hit their bottom line, secondly, the big wigs of the company were a majority of high-ranking ex-Disney employees, so loyalty and kickbacks most likely played a part in their decisions as well! Anyway, the movie itself.... very bland and essentially worthless to the whole Endgame build up, as not watching this movie would leave you in no-way worse off understanding what was going on in Endgame, as she contributed virtually nothing to the overall plot of the movie! There was just so many things that didn't make sense here and contradicted things that we already knew from previous films and just seemed to be a movie that had a bunch of checkboxes that they wanted to tick to make her character seem more important than she actually was! It took me 11 sittings to try and watch this movie, I had better ones to watch, I'm just glad I only had to pay £0.50 ($0.60) to buy the DVD, however I still felt really ripped off!

The film for the standee is _True Lies,_ which plays into this movie's themes. Also, when Mark Ruffalo asked if "Barry was angry," after leaking spoilers, the security guard in the car is Barry. He's the head of Marvel Studio's security. So when he says, "the theater has its own guy," the meta-joke is that the theater people watched the film in has its own security arrangements. The problem a lot of people have is her arrogance. It’s similar to Tony in all but one way; Tony’s arrogance is written as a character flaw that he has to overcome again and again, and sometimes fails to do so. Captain Marvel’s arrogance is written as a character strength. Not just Marvel, but all studios recently have no idea how to write a relatable, strong female lead without them being obnoxiously arrogant and unexplainably strong

she will likely have to deal with her arrogance later. this is her first movie. I think we need to be a bit patient. She now has contempt for the people who gaslighted and manipulated her, turned her into a weapon. Lied about her past. Tried to use her. Once you break out of that and you can more clearly see that same person trying to manipulate you in the ways they used to that used to work you develop contempt for them. It is very accurate. That is exactly how I was when my Mum tried to manipulate me now with guilt trips or pretends she's sick. Just contempt. When other people have tried to manipulate me again I just feel contempt for them. It doesn't make it not a problem but it is accurate.

Brie Larson made a comment about the latest film adaptation of the book "A Wrinkle in Time" and how it "wasn't made for some 40 year old white dudes," because akin to the hate the Rings of Power LOTR prequal's getting, it was a book wrote a ways back, 1962 for A Wrinkle of Time. Fans criticism of the film was that they changed characters for "woke" reasons that didn't need to be made. I actually read A Wrinkle in Time in 7th grade but can't remember it so never even cared or bothered enough to watch the movie. Personally I think it's kinda f'd to say fans of books can't be upset if things are altered, changed. However, a lot of people always make it super racist so you feel disgusting trying to defend the original book. 🤷 I was a huge lover of the lore in the Witcher games and books. The way the live action series changed characters and stories made me livid. Geralt is suppose to be ugly, gaunt, thin. They made him f'n superman. I won't mention stories because spoilers.

The story behind Fury’s lost vision is handled differently in the comics and the films. In the comic Fury loses his eye in a Nazi grenade blast. But in the MCU, Fury is sensitive about the subject of his eye and doesn’t want to talk about why he wears an eyepatch. It was revealed in Captain Marvel that he lost his eye when Goose scratched him. Goose is, of course, no ordinary cat, he is a Flerken which are fierce alien creatures resembling Earth cats. They have sectioned dimensions inside their bodies which allows them to protect objects. Though Fury doesn’t take the scratch seriously at first, it’s eventually revealed that he indeed loses his eye to Goose’s scratch.
