Elvis is such a strange movie. Butler really is captivating but Hanks is such an incredible dud and the fact that he’s the narrator makes the movie grating to watch

Also if you pay attention, the camera angle changes every THREE seconds. It is disorienting and removes any sense of emotion from all scenes. I noticed it about halfway through and then could NOT UNSEE IT.

@@billthomas7727 yeah I definitely expect eccentricity with Luhrmann’s direction but in this especially it seemed like none of the story beats were taken that seriously. Everything was just meant to dazzle without lingering too long on the spectacle, god forbid we learn anything of real substance from the titular character. Butler plays a good “icon” Elvis, but I honestly was hyperaware it was just him acting the whole time - I obviously couldn’t believe Hanks’ character either lol. I feel like crew knowing how important Priscilla’s approval would be in garnering an eager audience inhibited them from more resonant and complex storytelling. Or maybe it’s just that Luhrmann should not be behind a biopic in the first place lol

Slow doesn't equal bad. In fact, films *should* generally be slower otherwise it just becomes something that isn't cinema basically. It's not the job of a director to be a circus clown. It's your job as a viewer to step into the film.

In terms of acting, editing, story, music, literally everything overall .. EEAAO deserves the Oscar. All of the other films were amazing but this film just captured the essence of WHY people make movies and how to break the mold of traditional filmmaking. The only other ones I could see winning are the Fableman’s and All quiet on the western front because the academy loves military movies and Spielberg lol.

The whole time I watched Elvis I was thinking “hmm this looks and feels a lot like The Great Gatsby”. Turns out both movies were directed by the same guy! Both movies are identical in how they were shot. There’s so many quick cuts and crazy angles, but it fit the vibe of The Great Gatsby better in my opinion. In Elvis it was very distracting and kind of overwhelming at times. There’s also the method of storytelling of having a side character as the narrator for the main character’s life; but that worked better in The Great Gatsby because Nick Caraway was a writer. He was reading what he was writing about Gatsby out loud (to the audience). In Elvis, Tom Hanks’ character was the villain, so why was he the one narrating to the audience?? Austin Butler did an amazing job as Elvis, but man was that movie a sensory nightmare

I think I would label All Quiet as more of an “anti-war” film, similar to the 1985 film Come and See. Trin, you might appreciate Come and See, but only if you’re in a mentally safe place, since its particularly hard to watch.

I've seen Elvis. It was okay, it had Baz Lurmann glitter all over it. Austin Butler did a pretty good job, but I had trouble hearing past his mumbling sometimes. I prefer Brendan Fraser anyway.

I really like this video, because it proves that no matter how much someone likes a movie; how much it might change them, hit them right in the heart and soul, inspire them, and help them love everything about cinema all over again... there is someone else who will find that same film so boring that that fall asleep hah Film is subjective. i've been trying to get through the best picture nominees as well and so far i've seen EEAAO, avatar, top gun: maverick, triangle of sadness, women talking, and all quiet on the western front. i started watching banshees but the beginning is just so slow, like, i'm sure it picks up but i think i'm going to have to start and stop it a few times. EEAAO is obviously a blast to watch, can't say much more than that. avatar is cool visually but when you stop for like 5 minutes to think critically about the plot it is so ridiculous, like, the first two thirds of it is avatar 1 and the last third of it is titanic. that's all you need to know. i saw a tweet calling top gun the "navy recruitment video cinematic universe" and i have to agree. triangle of sadness was a wild ride. some parts were kind of slow to me but the outrageous stuff was really fun. i probably wouldn't watch women talking again but i enjoyed it while i was watching it! agreed that the acting in it is phenomenal, and even though it's literally all dialogue and the whole plot of the movie is them arguing about whether to stay or go somehow it never gets boring. there's only so many war movies i can take but i thought all quiet did a good job of getting across the key anti-war message of the book. it's way too sad to ever watch again but it was definitely impactful and i can understand why it has won a bunch of awards.

it's okay trin, elvis isn't for everyone. i was absolutely entranced by it and have watched the movie over twenty times. it is a difficult film to follow due to all the flashy editing and montages. but i'm glad you gave it a shot

Im a massive cinephile/Oscar nerd and I loved this vid. In case anyone wanted to know what movies are most likely to win my prediction is Everything Everywhere All At Once, it´s got a lot of love from both cinephiles and normal people and has done very well at precursor awards. Personally I would go with either Banshees of Inisherin or All Quiet on The Western Front but I think EEAAO deserves it.
