In the original script of Mrs. Doubtfire Robin Williams & Sally Field characters got back together instead of actually divorcing but Williams & Field where against doing the film that way because they where afraid it would give kids whose parents are going through this false hope so they rewrote the ending.

yeah one of the reasons this movie was good, IMO, is that it was grounded and courageous enough to show that... most of the time... people who get divorced or even break up don't actually get back together and you gotta figure out a way to move on, in stead of falling into the typical Hollywood cliché of every couple always finding their way back to each other.

That’s just an opinion not backed up with any facts. The stats actually tell a different story. Kids need both parents and divorce is a leading cause to violence, jail time, and an all around bad time. Single motherhood has exploded, fatherless homes are the norm and then we wonder why kids have issues.

Divorce used to be stigmatized but now it's glamourized, which has had a horrible effect. I would have agreed with you at one point but now I'm not so sure. My parents have 5 divorces between the two. Hypothetically, if divorce was EXTREMELY difficult, but not illegal, people would be much more selective about who they date/marry and they would be more inclined to fix their relationship instead of throwing it away, which has become all too common in today's society. We don't try and fix or work things out anymore, we just throw shit out and get a new one.

Then don't get married. Divorce should be rare and should have to have documented reasons. no fault ruined marriage and families, and it was by design. If it's "what's best for the child," then marriages should be enforced regardless of happiness. NOTHING is worse statistically than single motherhood. Period. There is no close second only a FAR distance second. Now listen to the "for the kids" lohsers scramble to justify the true motivation: "for the wammins." Thankfully, all this BS is coming to an end. Societies in the west are waking up. The free rides for vajynas thanks to the family court system are breaking down swiftly. When that ends, marriages return, and they know it.

No one's saying his heart isn't in the right place, but he's throwing some big birthday bash and talking about taking a vacation right after he chooses to quit a job? A good one too. You know that voice work paid well. I love how we rebounds so quickly too, getting a fun local TV job and then his own apartment (although his work history does kind of help). This movie is amazing showing the flaws in both Robin and Sally’s characters. Daniel was childish, irresponsible (regarding chores and decent upkeep of the household; basically minor necessities of living) he wasn’t awful or terrible, just not the best husband. Miranda was definitely noticeably jealous of Daniel’s relationship with their kids, and it shows a lot, but she’s a good mother, albeit a little selfish (all she had to do was give him a chance to improve and be able to see the kids; as it’s very clear the kids would definitely motivate him to do so) and she’s also a woman who wants a man who actually cares about her. So Daniel may be a terrific father, but as a husband it was clear they were better off apart.

That's weird, I didn't really think of the mom as a villain when I was a kid, I thought well he did destroy her house. My mom would have whooped my behind if I did that, so divorce made perfect sense. However when I watched it as an adult and realized that the Very Rich Stuart Dunmire asks for her by name, then the over the top party is too much? I'm fairly certain this wasn't the first over the top party he threw. And she admitted she never talked to him about any of her concerns. So he just thought he was the fun parent, he had no clue his wife was thinking of leaving him. So needless to say I'm a lot more cynical of her motives these days then I used to be.

42:25 Why? Stu wasn't a bad guy at all here. And fyi, they were going to make a sequel, the idea being Lydia went off to college and Daniel brings back Mrs. Doubtfire as a way to keep an eye on her. But after Robin's passing those plans were scrapped. Let's be honest no sequel or remake would ever work without Robin may he R.I.P.

I just have to say this movie hits differently when you are married and have kids and go through problems that either ends or nearly ends in divorce

Thank you for your reaction! I get a lot of heat for having a similar reaction that Miranda went a bit to far taking away a good father from her kids because she's mad at him. Far to many parents do this and use there kids as pawns in there divorce!

I'm old enough to remember Robin Williams from Mork and Mindy. He's super talented, but I was never a big fan of his. This movie is hysterical though.

i always hated Sally Fields' character in this movie, cold as ice and spiteful, until the last few minutes of the movie, where she changes her mind and does the right thing.

I'm going to counter that a bit: it's hard for her because she has to clean up after Williams' character all the time: the neighbors get on her back about the party that Daniel staged; the police pile up on her. Guess who had to clean up the entire house after the animals and the kids were out of the way. For sure this isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened. She has to be the bad guy in the marriage because Daniel doesn't take account of what his fun leads to, so she has to be the accountable one. Being accountable all the time is exhausting. So it wears on her. As she tells Mrs. Doubtfire, Daniel was never in the place to listen to her when she tried. So the communication was never made until Daniel heard it as Mrs. Doubtfire, and it's too late now. Miranda wasn't alone in the failure of the marriage. It takes two.

@@melenatorr I agree with most of that, my only issue is that there still was no reason for her to keep him from seeing the kids. Despite everything with him and his immaturity, he was a good father.

That's because you're immature and cannot look at things through other people's perspective. Grow up! A parent cannot be his kid's friend, he has to be a parent. You cannot expect one parent be the bad guy just because the other one is immature. She worked hard, she did her best while he was being a lousy husband and never even tried to understand things from her perspective. Then he lied to her, and used her trust. This is a comedy, and should not be taken too seriously, but if you judge one character like this, then look at what actually the other did. He manipulated her, and he had probably been sweet-talking her before and then gone back on his promises. In reality those kind of fathers never change, and they are not a good influence on their children. The mom had to take care of everything and be the one who wears the pants in the family. Had he been a better husband and taken care of his wife, he wouldn't have brought all the misery on himself.

I love how many lines you were able to predict. That either reflects a badly written movie (not the case here) or being in touch with the writers. PS: That "acting off emotion" commentary. 😉
