Roda dug out a victory from the San Siro once, when the Serie A and Milan were still mighty. I feel no connection to Limburg at all but I have always had a soft spot for it's football clubs. They are good at struggling, they just keep on struggling until they suddenly play very well for while, and then they go back to struggling.

This was one of a wave of new stadiums in the NL that really started it's life as... A proper stadium. By now most of these grounds are respectable, but many of them started out badly (the JC Arena probably the best/worst example). But I had never seen it from the angle of the entry... I must say... That is a rather glorious entrance. Too bad the club hasn't been able to make good on it since then. I remember Roda playing some close games against big European names in the 90s at old Kaalheide. They definitely belong in the Eredivisie. But seeing them pitted against MVV again is also kind of fun. But I'd rather see them up there too.

Maybe a fun fact that may or may not have been told to you. The wall that you look at when entering the main doors of the stadium has soms tiles on it that can be ‘bought’ and you get your name slapped on it. Johan Cruijff actually bought one of the tiles as he was a big fan of the culture of the koempels, nothing can be achieved withoud working hard for eachother, its still on the wall to this day.

Little explainer; Kerkrade, and Roda as an extension of that are a coal miner's and working class city and club from a (now!) very poor region. Maastricht on the other hand, is very much a "hoighty toighty" city that sees itself as being far above the rest of the province. Being "more" than the rest. You know the saying "dress your Sunday best"? People in Maastricht just dress to be seen every single day, rain or shine. I guess they still hang onto their Napoleonic era times! Rich, poor. Office workers, coalmine-/manual labor workers. Universities, secondary vocational education schools. Tourism, ...nothing. The contrast between the two areas and therefore clubs couldn't be bigger, and the rivalry between these two areas goes back very, very far.

Hard working city hahahahhahhaa. Most people in the region don't have jobs and doing drugs every day. Maastricht is in everything better than Kerkrade. Only the footbalclub is less populair because there so much more to do in the city. Maastricht people are proud where they come from. And that's what people in Kerkrade don't like. They don't have a city to be oroud proud of.

The Roda ground is built on the site of the distribution centre of a company I used to worked for. They moved to Heerlen and are still there

Some points to take in: - Roda play in Kerkrade, not in Heerlen - The anthem they play is the anthem of the province of Limburg. Not just the region of Roda. (Why only Roda plays it, beats me)

The only ones to take some sense of pride in it I guess. It's a disputed anthem, seeing that it's writen in, well, Dutch, and not any of the dialects. Relatively weird choice indeed, as it's the anthem of a province that has many similar dialects. Why not choose 'ABL' (Algemeen Beschaafd(?) Limburgs) haha.

as someone who's been going to roda forr 24 years now. these matches are just nuts. the excitment. the nervs. a whole week your just with a nut in your stomach, no away fans is a shame, but i saw it coming as soon as it kicked off last year. it's sad but it is what it is.
