I WELDED A SILL FOR THE FIRST TIME EP.9

In this video, me and Gareth give welding a shot. We start by grinding out all the old rusty metal on the drivers sill and then fabricating the new metal ready for welding.
It looks nothing like the original, but it at least appears to be functional. What do you think?

Hopefully yours isn’t as major as this as it’s made it a lot more difficult compared to say just doing a little patch. If you’ve got all the equipment then just give it ago off the car, welding is just one of those things than takes time to master.. we’ve got a long way to go but the other side is coming along nicely. We still need to clean up the side in the video though

Considering that’s your first real go at welding it’s not that terrible lol. The fabrication of the new sill panels was good! I would dress the welds up some more with a 120 grit flap disc (being careful to go gentle and just to take the weld down and not the steel on the car), you could then turn your attention to the holes and gaps, welding them up and then dress them in the same way, you’ll be surprised how much better it will turn out for spending that bit more time on it!

Appreciate the advice. I’ll order some flap discs and we’ll get to work on cleaning it up. Hopefully the other sill will be done on the weekend, if not the one after, so it shouldn’t be too long before the next video is out!

Great first attempt at welding guys. You will look back in couple of years and laugh at how bad it looked compared to your latest work lol. Can’t wait to see the subframe back on!

It is really that bad? 😂 all we can do is give things a shot and see how we do. Any advice and what we can do better will be appreciated.

You both only have 30 minutes experience, so don’t stress too much. It’s obviously not going to look as good compared to others that have been welding for years. Looking forward to seeing the improvements on the next sill. Can’t wait to see the subframe on too!! Keep it up!

We’ll get there. Definitely gonna see an improvement on the next bit of welding. I wanted all the welding in one video, but it’s taken so long just to do one sill that I just decided to release what I had edited. Thanks for the comment. Subframe video coming very soon.

Props for giving it try. I would have paid someone else to do it. I’m useless when it comes to stuff like that. Try to get the videos out more frequently so I’m not waiting a month 😉

Yeah hopefully by the time all the welding is done, you’ll see a clear improvement from the start. Gotta start somewhere, but admittedly, most wouldn’t start with welding sills on a car though

I noticed on one of your old vids you wax oiled everything as a top coat, don't do that cause it never drys. Get some schultz (stone chip) the guns are about £15 and you need a little compressor but the finish is wayyy more professional. and use the red oxide as a primer not that direct to rust 👍🏼

Funny you mention it as I plan to use Tetrosyl shutz this time around. I’m not sure how much I’ll need but, you can get a 1 litre can with the gun attachment for £22 - I already have compressor back from the unit days so that saves some money. The forums suggest I should be adding another layer onto of the primer before undersealing though. What do you think?

@@slothgarage I'm not sure about another layer, (i spray wood for a job) but I sprayed my new sills with primer then shultz 2 years ago and they look good but the car still hasn't moved since😂 1 litre goes a long way and you have to spray thinners through straight after or buy a new gun every time like i do.

for a first attempt its okay, i've seen a lot worse.. however speaking as a car welder by trade i would deffently grind those welds more flat and weld up de the holes! these hole aka pinholes are to big to seal with just seam sealer. due to grid from the road smashing the bottom of your car this would get ruined in a matter of months... turn of your weld timer as this is something you can use when youre more experienced. right now it just holds you back as a beginner. second make sure that the gaps you want to weld are tight and clean i always have the rule of cleaning the edges to bare metal with 1cm on each side of the welding line. third it still looks like you ether dont have a good " gas ' flow out of your welding gun or the pressure is to low on your regulator. you can notice it as the welds look brownish and has a lot of spatters. fouth the sill were its meets the other plate just make holes in the plate ( spread 5/6 cm between each hole ) on the side wear you can weld en weld the holes and fil them up with weld. this makes for a better conection between the plates and when grinded flat a much smoother look. this actualy how the were made in the factory called spotwelded. i hope i helped you with this and wish you many luck on your welding skills! just keep practising it and you would be good! greetings from holland!
