wooo expensive ..very expensive ! 68 dollars? for 1.5 meters? omg!With fabrics at those prices I don't sew, I have never paid more than 10 euros per meter of fabric and that is something special...the normal thing for my purchases is a maximum of 3 euros per meter...sometimes 5

Yes it’s expensive but it was very special fabric. Silk fabric isn’t cheap in the US and the price was in the range of what I’d be able to buy here.
@christinelillywhite777
@christinelillywhite777 4 күн бұрын
Exactly! I sewed all through the 70s and 80s and enjoyed creating my own wardrobe for a fraction of the price of store bought clothes. Once clothes became cheap, fabric became expensive and has all the same issues of product miles and sustainability so the fabric stores closed in hoards. Add to that the fact that a pattern is the price of a complete garment from a high street store! Now fabric and patterns are exclusively for the affluent hobby sewer, or sewists as they have been rebranded. The Sewing Bee has inspired people to sew until they realise fabric prices mean the options are now to up-cycle or alter thrifted clothes.

Oh my word! My absolute dream :) I just love spending time walking around fabric stores and I get so excited and happy that I can look at a fabric and just know what I can make with it. Beats walking around a general clothing shop and taking something off a rack that maybe dozens of other people are wearing ;) Sure, it takes time and can sometimes be more expensive to make a garment yourself but you are wearing something unique and just for you!

Omg I feel the exactly the same way! Shopping in stores is completely underwhelming with the boring fabrics and styles. I would much rather buy fabric to make something unique to me ❤️

Just in case you didn’t know, there’s the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow (end of Victoria line) which was his family home. No fabrics on sale from memory but large collections of his furniture, wallpaper, textiles, writing etc. Like most museums it is free entry, had a nice place for tea and cake when I was there.

If you are going in the next week, they are having sales on fabric and other haberdashery. If not, then be sure to check the 4th floor for discounted fabric. I spent all of my “souvenir” money on fabric. Happy Shopping!!

Liberty does William Morris prints that you can get in the states in Joann's online shop... maybe also in some of the stores. William Morris fabrics and wallpapers have been available for "always." I still have a pamphlet style catalog I ordered from the back of a sewing mag in 1975. Lovely, lovely stuff.

Buying Willam Morris printed fabric in the UK was more satisfying that getting it online from Joann’s. Interestingly enough, John Lewis had all sorts of home furnishings in William Morris prints which were also beautiful. Unfortunately I didn’t have room to bring back bedding!!

After going through my me made creations I’ve realized that I mostly make dresses and skirts; the latter would not show up on camera during filming. I’m planning to sew more tops in the coming year. The black t-shirt and jeans is a uniform that creates continuity through my videos and gives me one less thing to think about when planning and recording videos. I am planning to make my own black t-shirt using the #skylinetee from @sewhouse7

Great overview, and I loved all of the video that you got at the various places. I believe the William Morris patterns are still owned by Liberty but they do allow other groups to print them from time to time. By far the most popular print is the strawberry thief, and I believe that’s why John Lewis got the right to produce it. I love Liberty and they have a great website. Plus the building is amazing. I am sure you know all about Liberty. My next trip to London, I am going to remortgage the house and buy some fabric there. Lol.
@SewSewLounge

Surprisingly Liberty didn’t have any William Morris prints- or at least the ones I was looking for. John Lewis also had William Morris printed bedding, lampshades, and other household goods which were quite beautiful. I did buy fabric at Liberty- that video is coming next month 😉

@@SewSewLounge I can’t wait! I do know that John Lewis has all the accessories, which is fantastic. I have my eye on a smaller sewing box/case for my living room. My various projects are spread all over and it would be nice to have a place to keep them organized outside my sewing room. I love Liberty but they know that they have a following and price their fabrics to reflect this. I try to get things that are marked down starting the day after Xmas each year from them. Seems like the best prices or at least the best chance of good prices. Can’t wait for more from your trip and I wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed your videos. I have just found you but I plan on staying around!

Just to let you know, Berwick is pronounced ‘Berrick’ and even some of my fellow English people don’t get it right like the street in my town that’s written Belviour but pronounced ‘Beaver’, I know, confusing right!
