ABOUT: Space Engine
SpaceEngine is a 1:1 scale science-based Universe simulator, featuring billions upon billions of galaxies, nebulae, stars, and planets, all shown at their full real-world scale. Explore Earth and our neighboring worlds in the Solar System, orbit a black hole in a galaxy billions of light-years away, or visit anything in between seamlessly, with no transitions.
All of time and space are yours to explore - cruise between the stars at a million times the speed of light, and accelerate time to watch the orbital motions of a thousand worlds play out before your eyes. Every planet you encounter in your journey will feature procedural 3D terrain with detailed textures. Everything you see in the sky - stars and galaxies, planets and moons, asteroids and comets, black holes and neutron stars, star clusters and nebulae - are yours to explore at the press of a button.
Spacecraft with Newtonian physics and pilot-assist autopilot features (in early development but fully usable) are yours to fly anywhere in the universe in the Flight Simulator mode. SpaceEngine is also very friendly for creators of mods and add-ons - create your own planets, star systems, even galaxies, import your own spacecraft models, create custom GUI skins, and more, all easily sharable with others.
With SpaceEngine, the possibilities are limitless.
SpaceEngine Planetarium capabilities:
Astronomy
All types of celestial objects are represented: galaxies, nebulae, stars and star clusters, planets and moons, comets and asteroids. Known celestial objects are represented using data from catalogs: galaxies (NGC/IC), stars (HIPPARCOS), star clusters, nebulae, and planets (Solar System and known extrasolar planets). Regions of space not yet cataloged feature procedurally generated objects: galaxies, stars, star clusters, nebulae, and planetary systems.
Controls
You are free to move around the universe - travel seamlessly between any object and any distance, from surface to orbit to interstellar and intergalactic space. Moving through space is as easy as "click and go", as well as game-style free flight using the WASD keys or a gamepad. Also, time travel is possible: you can accelerate, decelerate, or reverse the flow of time, and jump to a specified date. Detailed interactive tutorials will familiarize you with the controls.
Graphics
Volumetric 3D models of galaxies and nebulae with interstellar dust clouds, and 3D landscapes on planets and stars. For many Solar System bodies, actual data from space probes is used, with huge, high-resolution texture packs available as free DLC. For unmapped and procedural planets, the surface is generated procedurally using your computer's GPU. Other features include realistic atmospheric scattering, eclipse shadows, animated auroras and comet tails, and physically-based light warping near black holes and neutron stars, with animated accretion disks and jets.

neutron stars spin incredibly fast. so you being "on" the star and looking out would see everything moving incredibly fast. hence the weird "time" issue

Well, time would be dilated in such a way that normal time for you would be extremely slow for everyone else. Or, from your perspective, everything else would seem to be moving extremely fast.
@62sy

Killaim also it’s spinning motion gives of gravitational waves that messes with time and space around it, creating a boombox of gravitational waves... standing on a neutron star (if you somehow don’t get evaporated and crushed into atoms and blurred out the light, why not say black dwarf then?) would look like something like this: everything around you is moving so fast that you can’t even identify the objects that you see, but whatever you see is somehow being warped even tho you can’t even differentiate what is moving backwards or what is moving forwards...

@@darthrevan454 Yeah, but I wonder how the surface of a spinning object would obey that. Like, let's say it was just all ultra-condensed neutrons-- the particles getting too close to the speed of light would have to fly off, I guess? Also, tachyons, electrons, photons, neutrinos, and probably a couple more I missed, can go FTL, but that's due to multi-dimensional physics.

Well strangely the light that is “beneath you” cannot reach you even as you fall in. The light “overhead” should only be blueshifted if you are not in free fall, hence accelerating away from the BH outside of the even horizon. So ultimately no signal reaches you as you eventually become spaghettified approaching the singularity. There’s no light to reflect off of anything and even if there were, it would never actually reach your “location” in any detectable wavelength. Essentially, all rigid objects become destroyed inside a black hole, and the interaction between any two locations in time become cut off until it possibly evaporates via quantum vacuum fluctuations near the event horizon. It’s almost as if the rest mass and relativistic momentum of anything that falls in gets converted to pure gravitational energy.

9:25 I can explain, neutron stars are the fastest spinning objects in the universe. Explanation for this : All starts rotate, including supergiant and hypergiant stars rotate, supergiant stars and hypergiant stars go into supernova at some point and that spinning is converted onto 20 km sized objects we call ' neutron stars ' and ' black holes ' because these 20 km sized objects are millions or billions of times smaller they spin really fast, at least that's what I think

Ok, so here's a really simplified explanation of the reason time seemed to be moving so fast outside the black holes and the neutron star: Space-Time can be imagined as a plane (not the flying machine) that can be bent by gravity. Imagine space-time as a flat cloth. Drop something in it. It bends the cloth. The heavier the object, the more the cloth bends. More gravity, means more bending. So objects like Black-holes and Neutron stars bend time more and slow it down because they have a lot of gravity. So time outside the black hole/neutron star seems to move much faster. Heck, even the Earth bends time. The space around Earth is a bit faster (time-wise) than the Earth.
@ExistentiallyDreading

Actually, that's not why. You would not perceive time to be moving faster. He was just witnessing the rotation speeds of a neutron star.

I'm late to the party but as an astronomy student I have to correct some assumptions about neutron stars. (Also Grey, I love your space episodes ❤) 1) They do spin extremely fast. Think about a figure skater speeding up their spin by drawing their hands in. The same happens with stars when they become neutron stars. They become really small (as small as 20km across) and dense and the smaller it becomes the more it speeds up. Some can rotate as fast as 43 000 times a minute. 2) Time does indeed seem to go faster on the surface of a neutron star. Remember our dude Einstein? Well, he talked about space time aka the relationship of gravitation and time (and a lot more). As neutron stars are incredebly dense their surface gravity is unbelievably strong (second only to black holes). Gravity this strong greatly affects the perception of time. If you look at a neutron star from outside you'd see things move slow, and if you were on the surface everything else would seem to move really fast. Not because it actually is, just because your perception of time gets warped. Cause, y'know... space time and stuff. I do more of the math side for things but I do specialize in objects of greater mass if someone wants to know more. Pulsars are my favourite 😉
