gsis are getting rare. i remember when they first came out, the escort mk6 was launched at around 1995. around the time of the last year of the rs2000, all the boy racers opted for the rs2000 didn't bother insuring them ragged them into the ground and a lot of them found there way to the scrap yard or torched in fields. the sensible ones picked the rover gsi/gti as a lot of the younger generation snubbed them back in the day you usually heared the phrases "its a old mans car" or "something my grandad would drive" so the rovers were a lot better looked after as they were driven by a lot of the middle aged/older generation. just rust issues on them you had to keep on top of. vinyl wrap it, half the cost of paint and less prep needed and you can pick any colour pattern or design you want probably be in and done in one day. any damage you can just get the damage panel rewrapped for peanuts.

I always coveted a 420 wagon way back when I was a teen driving my 414sli. I love the style and practicality of smaller estates. Not daft to save it if mechanically/structurally sound and the interior does look great - paint can wait but personally, I wouldn't try to 'rat look' it.

I enjoyed this episode, it was exciting, 'will he, won't he make it home?' but I'm glad that you did in the end. I liked the under bonnet footage too, it made us feel like we were going through it right there with you. A sweet engine makes everything else worth while. Far more practical than the coupe and will look a treat once you've fixed the paint...great opportunity to experiment with the spray gun and compressor! Wrap? Wash your mouth out! Unless you 'fess up, I suspect that Mrs. Furious will suspect that you have a mistress based on your suspect secretive manner and she'd suspect right, as the prime suspect is called madam Rover 420Gsi. 😍

It's very nice! I do like a mid sized station wagon (tourer). My nephew has a Corolla that had peeling lacquer on the roof and I had a go at re-spraying new lacquer on it using spray cans and a handle attachment, which works brilliantly. It turns the can into a spray gun (sort of). I carefully rubbed down the edges and cleaned it thoroughly and resprayed the whole roof in 2 - 3 coats. It looks excellent and has lasted several years of Sydney sun and complete neglect. You can do it! It's not that difficult. I learned some painting techniques from various KZbin channels. Good on you for saving this lovely car. ✔

I had a fire-engine red 218 SLD Turbo as a company car, probably my favourite car ever. Picked it up from company HQ with 73 miles on the clock, spent the next 3,000 miles religiously running it in ('cos I'm old fashioned like that). I had loved R8's ever since the TV advert with Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes singing "Up Where We Belong" as a soundtrack, and used to joke with my wife and mum whenever we saw it on the telly "That's my next company car" laughing because they were seen as kinda exclusive and posh, and as if a nobody like me could get one of those! So when I got the choice of this, an Astra or an Escort as a company car it was a total no-brainer. Mine was also exactly the colour of the one in the advert, which was cool. When I turned up at home with it, their faces were a picture. It was classy and refined, smooth (for a diesel at that time), had real wood on the doors and dash and chrome kickplates with the Rover script on. Kept it until it had 72,000 miles on it and they made me redundant. Gutted at losing both job and car. Loved it so, both refined and fun (car, not so much job) The Peugeot diesel was unburstable and fast, the handling entertaining (if a bit tail-happy). Four years later, it passed me going in the other direction as a minicab! Still miss that car.

Glad to see I am not the only one who does things like this......and then has to go home and act like a kid in a confessional! Some things are just too good to say no to though.....and if it is a car you have always admired or wanted and it was a good price, then why not? The worst that can happen is that the foot comes down and something has to go in order to keep it. Some would choose the wife as the thing to go, but if yours is anything like mine (and I am sure she is because of your fleet), then she's a keeper....but that estate is a beauty and could be a stunner with not a lot of major work. Engine sounds good, box looks smooth despite the low clutch take, no diff whine and that interior is something that belies its milage to a large degree - and the sunroof still works! Maybe pads and rotors, but likely just very old unbalanced / out of round tyres and a slightly sticky calliper that has sorted itself. You'll be right about the battery not taking a charge that caused the engine to cut out. Have had that a couple of times when the engine revs got too low on a car with electronics that had sat for a long time. ECUs and EFI units like to have constant power for some weird reason.... With only a week or so before the MOT, if it were my baby, I'd be replacing things like wiper blades and addressing anything concerning to get it passed. Then I'd do the maintenance stuff - oils, fluids and such - and then have a go at the rot and the paint. Here's a thought - I've been wanting to try an experiment with one of my own vehicles with the peeling clear coat and find out if one can just clear coat over the coloured paint that has been exposed where the clear has peeled, Obviously a light sand with some 2000 grit and maybe some 600 / 1200 on the join where the peeling stops, but is it possible? I know you've got the added fun of the rot in the top of the front window - and that will obviously need more work - but why not try it on a door......or the bonnet that has been more or less completely exposed? Might save a few quid into the bargain! Worth a crack, you reckon? All the best, Matt.....and take heart that you live in a country that has oil refineries, houses a major player in the fuel industry and you aren't living in some tin-pot little country at the bottom of the globe that imports refined fuel and oil from wherever they can find it like the one I am in.

Love for the estate! Large engine, manual gearbox always a winner. I had dreams of getting one of these while at university in the early 2000s. Always thought they looked cool and would happily take a bike in the back. In fact these were definitely my favourite, above 3dr, 5dr and coupé. I currently drive a 2005 e90 BMW 330i manual touring and had almost forgotten about these, so thank you for saving it. Still keeping some Rover love going though, with a K Series Caterham :). I'd probably keep that Rover looking fairly standard. It would benefit from paint restoration but I know it will be costly. Good luck!

Two weeks ago I filled up with V Power near the Eurotunnel and I think it was about £1.79 per ltr at the time. It was about 10p cheeper here in Yorkshire but has since risen to the sane level. I expect it could be as much as 1.90 now in some forecourts. Of course I fully approve of you purchasing another R8. I've always preferred the 200's myself but I remember my Grandad looking to replace his second R8 200 series with a 400 tourer. The quintessential motoring experience. Doesn't matter if your car is brand new or old, you have to stop and fill it up with electricity every now and then.

Forget about re spraying it, just lacquer what needs lacquered, just take it down to the closest edge and bob’s yer uncle. Niiiiiiiiiiice tourer

Great colour and the T series is an underrated engine. Interesting what you said about the FDH reg numbers as my 820 was N515FDH, also a T series engine. Great for towing with its low end torque.

Back when these were new a mate’s dad had one, in a lovely metallic dark green. Can’t remember which engine it had or even if it was petrol or diesel, but in the mid 90s it was a really rather nice car. Certainly seemed a cut above the equivalent Ford, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Nissan etc. Doesn’t seem that long ago that Rovers were everywhere!

Nice buy, Matt! I really like that era of Rover & used to own an M reg 214SEi in platinum metallic with the same style seats & interior as that tourer.

Congrats on the new addition! At first look it seems quite solid, but needing of some TLC. Would really love an R8, but in Europe they have literally all disappeared. Haven't seen one in flesh for at least 10 years.

My dad had a j reg 420gsi saloon, BRG with the beige interior, fan hubcaps and optional 3rd brake light. His first really 'posh' car after a used Sierra diesel beforehand, he absolutely loved it and was on his carphone to my mum when it hit 500 miles after running in and gave it full beans, power bulge in the bonnet, memories....the best r8 models by far, saloon and tourer, better than the coupe's IMO

Well,I just hope that Mrs Furious will not skin you alive!!I used to pull stunts like these myself, long time ago. That is how I found myself owning 10 cars by now.I feel you,Matt. Most probably,I would have done the same thing....You got yourself a very practical Rover. That is a worthy buy.

Cool buy Matt.. sand it down smooth. Up to 1200 grit. And wrap it mate. It's a simple shape. No silly modern sharp edges etc.

Cracking car, please don't rat it, would be a shame as it has the makings of a good car. Always liked the look of the tourer.

This car is in need of restoration. I have not seen one of these in tourer form for ages. Sell one of the others and put the money into this one. It will look great and its practical for its size.

Gotta be saved, had the R8 3 door 2.0 GTi 1991 in white gold but with 3 kids became impractical. Something special about these cars they must be saved..good project...gotta be done.

If you paint it yourself, go with a matt paint to help with the even coats; a nice matt grey would be easy enough as opposed to something metallic. Great content as always

I'm glad you do this so I don't have to! My mother in law has two R8's that belonged to to my late Father in Law. I hope in time they might end up at that Rover place, but they've already sat for 7-8 years.

I will not burst your bubble Matt. Quite simply, this is my favourite R8 and, in my opinion, the best looking body shape. You've picked the best engine as well so get it MOTed and hit Scotland or the Lake District or something. Mid 90s Vauxhall Astra Estate, Ford Escort Estate, Golf Estate, Seat Vario, 306 Estate, Citroën ZX Estate, BMW 3 Series Touring, all worthy and practical but the R8 Tourer was rare and special.

Well, i can't say i wouldn't have done... After the tomcat, this is my fav Rover in your collection. I still hope that one day you'll finally buy a 75 (or a 620 ti), but for the moment, can't wait to see the restoration of the tourer

T-Series one of the best ordinary production engines ever. The one in my son's Rover 620ti [ Petrol Turbo ] now North of 240,000 miles and still running strong when I last drove it. Had several 620ti in the family over the years. Great cars with that Rover T-Series. If you decide to keep that 420, give that engine a thorough engine flush and fill with some decent 10w-40 Semi-S. You will be even more impressed with the T-Series.
