Gonna get backlash for this but personally I think that we should give more attention to mid/plus size experiences and here’s why. THIN BODIES ARE NOT MARGINALIZED THE WAY PLUS SIZED BODIES ARE. I’m saying this as someone who used to be a 00 in high school and am now a 2/4 in most stores. We recently did a clothing swap at work and I couldn’t fit into most of the clothes because they were too big. People used to call me anorexic and tell me to eat a cheeseburger. I get it. But people in larger bodies receive an overwhelming amount of hate for existing, receive unsolicited “health” advice from perfect strangers, and lack representation in the media and when they are represented oftentimes the fall into stereotypical tropes. None of these are things I experience as a thin person. People laud my health when I live off hot Cheetos and white claws.When I turn on the tv I see characters who look like me in lead roles and as romantic protagonists. Plus size/Mid size struggles and experiences are valid and real and Carrie shouldn’t have to put a disclaimer just to not get hate comments and backlash.

I'm the #69 like (hehe)... but I TOTALLY agree with what you are saying. EVERYONE has struggles. When I go shopping at thrift store with my sister(size 14-16) It always seems like she finds a bunch of cute stuff in her size and I (size 6-9) am always left empty handed or find just a few things. When I complain, I will feel shamed for complaining because I am smaller. Neither of us should be made to feel bad about our struggles. Point blank ....we all struggle and we all have come ups!! Just be happy and thankful , each time brings different results but I like to think it evens out eventually

Yup, teen in the 90’s right here 👋🏻 and I can tell you that there were NO cute mid-sized or plus-sized options available that were sustainable or affordable. We’re still trying to work our way back from the “super skinny” body type that was everywhere back then. Y’all...I was only a size 6 back then and was still battling disordered eating to try to fit the norm of what my girlfriends looked like, and I was teased for being “chunky” by my family. People who have bodies outside of the realm of standard sizing struggle to find things that fit them and are excluded from certain activities (ie shopping vintage). Carrie isn't blaming anyone or asking for anything to change or judging any of the stores. She is shedding light on the fact that some people have a lot fewer options than others and I think even just everyone being aware of that is a step towards a less judgmental more body positive place to live. thanks for the video Carrie!

I'm not trying to be rude at all, it's just an honest question. I'm a size 14/16 us. But weren't clothes just overall made smaller back in the day? This maybe obvious but I never really thought about that until now. I feel like that's a big reason why it's harder for us midsize and up girls to find vintage. Obviously that isn't a reason why there aren't many sustainable clothing options for us out there. Just a thought though.

Carrie Dayton I have been a size 18 and up since 1992 or so. I can tell you it wasn't until the last maybe 2005 that there were ANY fashionable clothes in the plus size section. All my childhood was spent trying to find the least granny type clothing possible. When skinny jeans came back, for example, it was almost a decade before you could find them in a plus-size section. When Torrid and similar stores opened that changed the game. When you're looking in thrift stores at clothes from the 90's and before it totally reflects that. I'm so so thankful there has been progress made. It's nowhere near equal but... progress.

@Brooklyn Paige I think it very much depends on what region of the country you live in. I am in WI & a good friend of mine has a consignment shoppe that I help out at. The largest sections begin at size 8 and up to 18. It's hard for her to get women's sizes 4-6 in stock. I am a 10-12 and have been for years, I have very little issues going to the bigger cities vintage/consignment/charity shoppes and finding lots of options in my sizes.

When I go into a vintage/thrift store, I go in with the mentality that I won't find items that will fit me. So when I do find something that will it is a lot more exciting. And what I will say is that I don't expect things to change, and I know thrift stores can't exactly control the sizing they get because it's reliant on what is donated. But that doesn't change the fact that these moments do sting and build that self consciousness.

One thing that I haven't seen touched on in the comments is that some "thrift stores" won't even accept clothes past a certain size. Which is so, so disappointing. I am from Missouri and here we have Uptown Cheapskates (very similar to Plato's Closets). The last time I went, I took in several pairs of nearly new American Eagle jeans. They were not accepted. At the end of my visit, they explained why certain items weren't taken (out of season, slight pilling, etc) but when it came to the AE jeans they told me they don't take jeans past a size 16. How upsetting is that :( When I politely asked her why not, she said it was because the store doesn't have room for plus sizes. No wonder I could never find my size of jeans there because THEY WON'T EVEN TAKE THEM. Moving forward, I try to spend my money at places that value women who are in bigger bodies (value them enough to carry their size). Finding sustainable, ethical, affordable, "plus size" clothing is nearly impossible. :/

THAT IS AWFUL AND THEY ARE SIZE DISCRIMINATING....I WOULD FILE A CLASS LAWSUIT LADIES!!! THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE OF THEM....ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!!!! ACT AND MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD. THEY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR DISCRIMINATION!!!!!!!!
@shaunnicolegroening5 жыл бұрын
@@philhebrank6885 I mean not at all to discount how terrible it is that they don't value larger bodies and somehow don't believe plus size women could possibly want to support sustainable fashion, it's also not illegal to not sell certain sizes, especially if they're open about it. I sell to Plato's fairly frequently and I wear a lot of mens pants, but they won't buy them from me because they're a mens 25 or 26, and the smallest mens size they sell is a 28. I agree its shameful of them to purposely not include plus size clothing in their store and honestly it seems like a poor business choice since there's clearly a market for it, however they're allowed to carry what they want in their own stores. It's not discrimination, it's just poor business.

Scientifically people in the US (or everywhere really) we're smaller on average in former decades. Having less 'vintage' items in larger size is therefore obvious. (Average height was smaller too-therefore shorter trousers) A size 10 today was a size 12 or 14 then...because people used to be smaller. It's crap for people nowadays. But that's why. There are some cool documentaries talking about that too

One thing about vintage clothes from the 70's or before is that sizes were smaller. Like a size 8 was the same as a sewing pattern size 8 with 34/25/34 measurements. Thos measurements are a size 2 today.. or close to it. Today's 8 is larger. So the older the clothes the smaller the size will be. Now 80's clothes and more recent should conform more to our current size measurements

The reason you find very many vintage clothes in your size is because larger sizes weren't generally accepted/celebrated until recent years. With vintage clothing something you have to keep in mind is also WHY these specific items survived for so long. People in the past didn't just trow clothes away, they were almost always worn out or re-used by someone else. Often the clothes that almost no one fit into (*like the extremely small sizes!!!*) was the clothing that didn't get worn as much, and that's why it still survives now, 60 or 40 years later. Like your prom dress nowadays. You were young and probably a lot smaller when you wore it, but it's a sentimental thing, so you keep it and take care of it. So in 50 years there will probably be a lot of teenager-sized prom dresses left over from this decade, but that doesn't mean those are actually representative of what most people wear.

Going to get some backlash for this but we have to keep in mind a couple things. Firstly, sizing was a whole different system decades ago so a size 12 in the 50s would be more like a 6 or something nowadays. Secondly, the average person used to be a lot smaller than the average person today, thus less plus sizes are found in these vintage stores.

okay in relation to sizing: the label teen is almost certainly in relation to the pattern size and being a VINTAGE shop lots of these pieces would have been designed and sized in a time where it wasn't common for teenagers to be of a bigger size, due to processed foods not being as common and widely available as they are today and without constant sources of sedentary entertainment. it really isn't a matter of discrimination or malicious intent but simply how the garment was created within its time and should be treated as such

I have totally also had this experience at vintage stores but I will also say that the average weight has gone up pretty substantially over the decades, in fact the average weight of a woman now is what the average weight of a man was in the 60's. I think this is the reason vintage shopping is really hard for mid and plus sized folks!

I think sizes have changed drastically. In the '70s/''80s/'90s I was a UK 12/14, (US 8/10). Now I'm still a UK 12/14 (US 8/10) and there's absolutely no way that I would fit into anything in those sizes from way back. My feeling is not to be too disheartened in vintage shops because we now have very different body shapes.

When I would watch documentaries on clothes/ plus size clothes through the ages it is always mentioned that there weren’t many options for people above a size 10/12, and also watching documentaries on how today’s kids and teens are generally less fit than kids back then both may be reasons that there is less plus size vintage clothing. As a midsize teenager though, I would say a lot of this seems to be exclusivity in these cases, almost like the Brandy Melville situation. Thanks for this eye opening video, and for normalizing bodies like mine💕💕

My mom has told me previously that the one “plus sized girl in her high-school was most likely what we consider to be a US size 10 today. They didn’t eat the same diet most of us do, so you can’t expect them to have a bunch of plus sized clothing if it wasn’t in higher demand like it is today. Definitely rude of that one worker to say that to Carrie though. :( I would’ve lost my shit on her tbh.

you Talking about people coming up to people and flat out saying "we don't have your size." Isn't something I have experienced in America as I'm not plus-sized BUT it reminded me that when I was in Japan, most stores there are free size aka one size fits all (usually smaller even then brandy Melville) Me and my friend, being taller, bigger (bigger then most Japanese people but average for the us) Americans we would walk into stores and anytime we would pick up something (specifically pants) a worker would come up to us and be like "oh this is a free size store, we don't carry larger sizes" It never felt like they were judging us, they truly probs just thought we were foreigners who might not know about free sizing but still It felt like they were telling us "you cant shop here your to big." In all of Japan, there is like maybe a handful of plus Size brands, One being called Punyus. I tried to buy a pair of jeans there but the sizes are just 1 2 3 and 4 Four being like a USA 18 and 1 being like a USA 1. I got a 3 and it was way too big like a USA 14 but a 2 would have been like a US 4. I couldn't imagine being plus-sized and living there, shopping would be impossible! Just thought id share!

So there is not a lot of good stuff out there to begin with. As for me, being plus size, I tend to hold on to my clothes until they are falling apart. I have to spend more on my clothes than skinnier sizes so I am choosier and hold on to them longer.

I love this video! I was plus size (18 pants) prior to weight loss surgery. It was so hard to go thrift shopping or boutique shopping because of my size and I just gave up and shopped at Forever 21 plus. Now losing 130 lbs wearing a size small I can actually shop sustainably at a thrift shop which thinking about it is frustrating because this was not exclusive when I was heavier. I love your videos and bringing this struggle to light. 💕

My sisters and I are all completely different sizes and we all get shade from others. It's ridiculous the way some retailers behave but for all those retailers who are supportive, kind and helpful, thank-you. ⚘

I understand what u r saying, but I feel like it’s not really anyone’s fault that they don’t have plus sizes because it’s what people donated. Now, a lot of people sell their clothes instead of donating them, which might play a big factor into it. I think you also sell on posh mark (your cuter clothes) and donate the less cute ones, so how can you blame others for not carrying bigger sizes but your not willing to donate your cuter clothes for someone else to thrift. Also, not saying this as a hater because I watch all your videos. I’m just trying to be educated about it. I’m a size (6/8).
@Dys_lexy_a5 жыл бұрын
While I fully understand where you're coming from, I completely disagree. The problem with saying "well you don't donate cute clothes so why would anyone else" is that it perpetuates this idea that we as plus size people are to blame. When there are so many other factors that come into play. One would be that not all clothes donated are sold in thrift stores. Some of your donated items will be bundled up and sold to the highest bidder and then shipped off to wherever they may be. And while some of that bundle may be resold *a lot* of it is going into landfills. Another factor to consider is that it is becoming more popular to alter larger pieces of clothing into smaller ones - taking 12+ sized jeans and cutting them down into a size 6, is a very common thing now. Also, the individual sale approach (like poshmark or depop) is a more accessible way to sustainably shop for so many plus size peoples. I agree that it may not be anyone's *fault* that there are little to no plus size clothes but Carrie's point in making videos like this is to show people that you can't just say "everyone should start shopping secondhand" because for a good portion of people it's just not feasible.

LA's girl stereotype is skinny and blonde chick. If it's even half truth (I'm not from US), it's nothing strange in it that you couldn't find clothes in your sizes. It's a thrift store, it has most common sizes in area because clothes come from people in an area. If they don't have your size it's not marginalisation, just mediana of clothe size of local women is other than yours.

As someone who is normally a 6-10, but is currently in the third trimester I actually was jealous of the random amount of available maternity in the "full size" section lol (even tho it was a weird section) Maternity clothes are actually sometimes super hard to thrift, there are usually like 3-10 items IF any store has a preggo section! WTF, expectant moms like to be fashionably sustainable too lol!

Hi Carrie. It would be really interesting to do some research. Contact a few vintage clothes sellers and find out what their experiences in regards to coming across plus size pieces in their collections have been. It could be a very interesting project, which could turn up some helpful results.
@Femmedenoir5 жыл бұрын
On a side note, you really should have tried things on because realistically the sizes in vintage clothes are allll over the place an 18 could fit like a 12 or a 10 could fit like a 4. So even if something looked too big or said it was too small it still could’ve fit perfect. You kind of have to not pay attention to the sizing.
@shannoncarr73385 жыл бұрын
Ya you have go into vintage shopping with the right attitude and really look for those great items and dont look at sizes cause they dont reflect the fit at all.

Growing up in the 70s and 80s I had to shop at "Fashion Bug". That's really the only store I can remember! That's why there are no vintage clothes in the mid-size range. We wore them...OUT! LMBO! I'm kind of kidding and kind of not. I'm so glad there are more stores out there now...even if it's not a perfect world, it has gotten a LOT better!

I have struggled with my weight all of my life and going to cute teen shops gave me a panic and a shame attack. I thought people were laughing at me thinking: there is nothing here for you honey! It is a horrible thing to go through. Why do society care if you are heavy or not!? What I am more ticked off is that people judge us ladies more than anything when on mans you can find a 3XL and for us a L is the bigger size!? Be healthy and love yourself! I love your videos and thank you for always being so positive😘
@woolypuffin3925 жыл бұрын
I dont mean to be rude or not size inclusive, but thrift stores can only sell the sizes their getting donated. As you live in LA, most girls are smaller than you, which is neither their fault. Maybe try some online thrift store 😊

I am a size 16/18 and I can definitely feel you on the not finding items it can be challenging. I have been thrifting for over 20 years (since I was a kid). When I was younger I was super skinny, but I have always had a curvy figure or pear shape. So no matter what size I am shopping in any store thrift or not can be challenging. I am from the Mid-West but lived in SoCal for a bit when I was in college. I can say from experience that being in a mid sized or plus size in L.A. is not the business. It was hard for me to find clothing when I lived there. I sew so I am able to make or alter items to work for me. I would say I have a much easier time thrifting in the Mid-West for larger sizes. I am always able to find my size in most thrift stores...vintage is more hit and miss. I will also say that representation is a huge issue. The average dress size for an American woman is a 14. A lot of labels don't produce beyond a size 12. It is a huge problem.

I've noticed that vintage clothing is sized differently. It's usually smaller in size than today's clothing tends to be.
@MaryJoHeadrick5 жыл бұрын
Idk how much of these clothes are actually vintage, but I've heard (and obviously i was not alive in an era where the clothes would be considered "vintage") that they didn't make "vintage" clothes in all of the sizes that people are now. not sure if that's because people were on average smaller or what. So because the clothes were never made, they can't be resold? Idk if that's accurate, but this is just based on my own experiences trying to find vintage clothes and what i've been told along that lil journey. Also I'm mostly talking about vintage clothes made from the 70s/maybe 80s and before EDIT: I wear an 8/10 but I find it difficult to even find those sizes in most vintage stores, which I've always attributed to the above.

I was never aware the privilege of stores almost always having my size (S-Top/02 Jeans) and how I could pretty much always not try something on cause I would know how it's going to fit. I'm trying to be more self aware and make sure other women feel supported and like the beautiful people they are regardless of size, because size really does not matter

I appreciate you do try one at different stores and acknowledge the struggle to find things in certain sizes. I am an 18 or 20 in jeans and literally can buy jeans from 1 or 2 places. Shirts are so hit or miss and I almost always buy from the mens section for shirts. It is not sustainable it is super expensive to buy in my size so I make it last a long time.

The thing about an employee coming up to someone and saying “we don’t carry your size” happened to my mom and I shopping once and LOL karma the place closed a month later. It was a small boutique and i was just in there being curious (mind you i was like 11/12) and i was trying something on (i was a 8/10 then) but i wanted to size up so my mom was looking and a lady walked past her and said “we don’t have anything past a XL here” and we left.

Sorry, very long comment....... That you have to add so many caveats and explanations when you should be able to post a video simply showing your experience is what is so bonkers here. You’re just showing your experience as a mid-to-plus-size person in your own particular city. As ideal as it would be for everyone to be able to thrift the majority of their closet, it just isn’t feasible for everyone everywhere. Even I get frustrated at times as a mid-size, long-time thrifter, and I’d rather see videos with these bumps in the road sometimes than ONLY getting shown sparkly glitter covering up the realities. A good sparkly video is fun, to be sure, but is that seriously ALL that people want? Variety is the spice of liiiife! It’s part of why I enjoy your videos-upbeat, but not going to sugarcoat this world of thrifting that we all love. If you can’t accept that there can be negatives and difficulties to the things you love without throwing a fit or flat-out trying to deny the validity of other people’s experiences, aren’t you just excluding people and hurting your own goals of spreading the joy and effort to be more ethical consumers? Also, I’ve always found it a tad presumptuous to expect KZbinrs to never express a negative thought. It feels like sometimes commenters are saying “How dare you be human and have an opinion and experience that isn’t constantly sunshine and daisies?!”
@suziet4275 жыл бұрын
But doesn’t it depend on what has been donated? The stores can’t be turning away plus size donations, so surely it can’t be their fault that there isn’t a great choice? It’s just what they get...? Or am I missing something? 🤔

You were in my neighborhood. I wish I could have run into you! Being a size 10 myself....I get it...and I have been told they don’t carry my size...but I also asked. So for me it did me a favor to not waste my time in the store.

I am a large woman 22/24 xlarge to 3x.... depending on the maker. I used to be a lot larger. I have struggled with my weight for a long time. I do thrift and buy from regular stores. I love watching Carrie's videos. I was amazed that midsize bodys had the same issues I had finding clothing. I doubt mind will get changed. If you aren't thin you are a horrible person. So why should we make clothes for you. Maybe they don't think that way but it's how I feel. Carrie keep up your good work. We love your videos.

I know your whole point here was thrifting vintage and it’s interesting. I’d be curious to see you visit the other more reproduction vintage shops in Burbank and show some try ons even though the price points are definitely higher. There are a lot like Vixen and Unique vintage in Burbank that so from a XS - 4X and I’d love to see where a mid size fits into these standards.
