Great video as usual, loved the edger for its simplicity and design features, one thing though, it took me a couple of moments to get a handle on your food terminology. Here in New Zealand your “Biscuit” is known as a “Bun” or “Bread Roll”, what you folk call “Cookies” we call “Biscuits”, I’m pretty sure we are both on the same page with “Cake” though.😂. Keep those episodes coming my friend, I look forward to them with anticipation.

Once you have figured out the berst place for the sawmill and edger, You could also just pour concrete footers at the location of your supports, so the machines are stable and flat (on the ground the sawmill can go out of level with the weight of the heavy logs and the impact when turning the logs). You will save on the amount of concrete and you could possibly do these footers yourself. One advantage of a full concrete floor would be that it is easier to sweep and blow clean.

I've been by the Wood Mizer plant There in Batesville In. hundreds of times. I drove for a company that hauls parts for Cummins Engine to and from Columbus In. I would sometimes come back home from there with plenty of room in my trailer and often thought I should stop and grab me a mill. Many years ago my father had one and I really liked running it. I'm retired now and have thought about getting one and do a little custom sawing just to keep busy. Edger will be a great addition for you, looking for more video's on it. Have a good day.

The best forgiving floor for a barn in my opinion for what it is worth. If you have the useless soil many of us have, Red Clay . Grind it very fine and add I bag of portland for every 15 - 20 square feet. Grind I t again with a tractor & three point hitch garden tiller. Grind it again. Lightly wet it and pack the hell out of it and stay off of it. For a few days. Very tough but fixable if you accidentlly mess up a section.. One of the best parts is the clay for me anyway is free...

I use pallet forks and two lifting straps to remove conveyor. Much easier and safer. Hitting the engine with the conveyor is a bad day. I also put a tarp under the machine for the sawdust to fall on. Just pull it out when full, makes clean up fast and easy.
@silentferret1049

If you are up in the air about concrete under the saw. You can go the turf and block route. Concrete blocks to spread out the load so it stays where you place it and not try and sink and everywhere else under, turf like used football field turf. Stuff keeps the dust down which being enclosed will kill off the grass and could be a bit muddy, it would be soft under the foot as well. Should be easy enough to vacuum up any chips and sawdust off of it and fairly low maintenance. It also won't be rubber mats and if I remember correctly, you can get the turf stuff in colors other than green like black if you wanted.

One thing you might consider since that is a flip off guide fence, laser sights. One can be fixed where the fence would be and the other can be tied to the dial and move with the saw. The one that moves would be the one to get first but thats a speed thing and ease of use for both so if you are not too tied on time then you don't need them.

Anti-fatigue mats are ok but I like building wood pallet type mats. Wood has a good spring to it, its what machinists put around their machines since chips can fall through. So if you do concrete build some flat wood mats with a little gap in them, the dust can fall through and you can blow it out. Or just pick up the mats every now and then to clean under. But its like a nice wood floor in a house, but with more spring.

If you do do decide to use gravel as a floor material you may want to get something like the Green driveway system to help keep the gravel in place. It is a grid pattern that you put down on a level surface then put the gravel into the grid and it helps keep it in place and allows you to use less gravel and maintain a more level surface.

New Edger to complete your sawmill production. Excellent. The suggestion to use the sawmill in location before permanent location is also an excellent idea. I believe you will want it on the end of the pole barn for easier access. Like your recommendation in buying tractors, you will need more than you think. It won't be long before you will want to add the 14' lean structure on the other side also. You always need more room than you think. Keep the dirt floor for now for comfort. Divert the rainfall away from inside the building.

Instead of concrete, you may want to consider decomposed granite (with stabilizer). Permeable so no puddles, softer to walk on than concrete, and I find it much more stable than gravel. Packs down well. Its what I use for my out door "visiting area". Instead of a wood deck or similar, I used stabilized DG on which I have my BBQ, firepit, picknic table, and benches. Not as easy to clean as concrete but low power on the leaf blower keeps most of the debris off. In my case, using it out in the weather, I typically have to do some minor "repairs" (bring in a small trailer load and spread) every two or three years. Under cover like you have I would think you'd likely get more like 4-5 years would be my guess. Keeps weeds away, not as hard but still firm enough to be comfortable to walk on, and easy to maintain. Just a thought.

You are right that walking on dirty is a lot easier on the feet than walking on concrete. But the feet on the Wood Mizer saw mills are too small a foot print for most soils. The feet just pound into the ground as you turn logs and the mills do not stay level. Northwest Sawyer on KZbin showed in one of his videos putting 12x12x2 boards under the feet.

Thats just like the older bellsaw planer shaper used to be, Woodmasters improved the desined by adding 2 routers Sander and shaper. So not only you could stock lumber But stuff like Crown moldings in High end woods that are finnished Think of a chair rail in oak or walnut Or even maple or just hardwood flooring. Can you add more blades 1 stick come out 4. Yes that is a nice tool to have straight line ripping on that is far better then trying to do on a table saw and less time then a track saw.

Did I see correctly that you were carrying a spare tire for the edger/trailer on your trip back? That is a lesson I learned a while ago. When those tires go on the highway, they really go and even destroy the fender. It can be hard to locate a spare out in the middle of nowhere.

A good alternative to concrete would be ag lime, if you have a bulk source to get it locally. You’d have to cut the topsoil off then fill with lime. If you water it while you compact the lime it packs very firm but wouldn’t be hard on your feet and back like concrete, and if much more smooth and easier to walk on than stone.

I would think ahead a little bit and go through the actual movements of log placement.. loading logs from the end of the building onto the mill would be a heck of a lot easier than trying to juggle space though the building. And cleanup of sawdust would be a nightmare without concrete. I thought the machine in the other new shop did all the edges and shaping? Am I wrong?

Almost always use a fence to keep the board parallel to the cut, even if you are cutting that edge.
