I was fortunate enough to live in Bangkok for 5 very special years of my life. It does not surprise me at all that you enjoy the food so much and at crazy low prices - it reminds me how we used to go to a local market most Sunday afternoons and feed our 4 young children main and dessert for less than USD3 then my wife and I for another USD5. I can honestly say that not one of us ever had a bad food experience although we always got good advice from local and ex-pat friends places to avoid. I promise you that the longer you stay, the more you will get hooked on hot chillies - my Thai colleagues used to laugh when I added extra chilli to my lunch, telling me I liked it more than they did. Have fun, and I hope you both make the most of your opportunities there. The floating markets are great, as are the crocodile and tiger zoos. Consider visiting Chiangmai Mai in the north or Kanchanaburi in the West (close to Myanmar border with lots of WW2 history). Also a river boat trip down the Chao Praya from Saphan Thaksin to Pakkret - in less than 2 hours you will transition from modern city to rural living. I’m jealous in case you wondered!!!

Thanks for the glimpse! TBH some elevators in London Tube have seemed deeper, and possibly some in Moscow metro as well, but those are admittedly not open on the sides. Can you also get something of Khao San at the moment, all the reports I've seen after the gentrification have been barren in broad daylight, while hotel reviews still :))) complain about the noise which appears to suggest there's some nightlife. I'd like to know how many blocks away I need to book my hotel. :D And should you still be in Bangkok the first days of February, I'd be happy to buy you a beer or two (unless you drink Singha).
