2021 saw Western Australia's fantastic Optus Stadium host its first (and possibly last) AFL Grand Final between the Melbourne Demons and the Western Bulldogs. While I am an Eagles supporter, I love footy and so do my mates and throughout the finals series we were right behind Melbourne to win their first flag in 57 years. After watching Max Gawn destroy Geelong in the Preliminary Final a few weeks earlier, we were lucky enough to secure tickets to the big game (thanks to our Victorian friends who couldn't be there themselves) and armed ourselves with beards and banner to support Gawny and the boys. The atmosphere was awesome and sitting right behind the goals with the Melbourne cheer squad was a blast! The pre-game and half time entertainment was great and included all the songs used in the video from Birds of Tokyo and Eskimo Joe. Things looked pretty bleak halfway through the third term with Melbourne three goals down, but a flurry of goals, including 3 in less than a minute to end the term changed all of that. Most of the goals had been scored at the opposite end of the ground, but in the last term the Dees put 9 goals over our heads as the celebrations started! Well done to Melbourne on winning the flag - they were clearly the best team all year - it was awesome that Perth could be a part of the ride.
