Lovely video! In regard to tides, I live in Ocean Shores Washington in the USA. Our tides in winter are called king tides and can be very destructive. Currently our tiny peninsula that juts out into the Pacific Ocean is threatened by ocean inundation. Our Jetty is having issues holding back the ocean. We have 26 miles of canals that connect us to land. King tides have eroded areas that are vital to protecting our area. You can drive on the ocean beach and often tourists miscalculate the tide and lose their entire vehicle to the incoming tide. Always check tides in ocean areas. Better safe than sorry!

Another great Video Ruth, good to see you getting about on the Bike. I have an e-bike best move I made, as it has got me out and about lots. My e-bike has 5 different power options that can be selected. I use options 3-5 for going up really steep hills, and when on the flat ground switch the power off to conserve power. Since buying my bike I have learned how to save battery power to enable me to cycle further. My friends and I will get on the train at Markinch to Pitlochry and cycle back home which is about 64 miles and you have to conserve power to be able to complete the ride. We have all got second batteries now which are not cheap which assists you greatly. The wind and which way you are heading and the wind blowing are all factors in how long your power lasts. Some people think that you just sit on an e-bike but I can assure you, you still have to pedal and put in a lot of effort when out on the e-bike, I have a Giant E+2 Fathom bike. I am currently off the bike as I am waiting to have a hip replacement, but I really do miss getting out on my bike big time. Take care and stay safe.🏴

@@ruthaisling When I was deciding on my choice of Brompton I wanted to avoid the bog standard colours of green, red, blue that my friends had. So I chose 'cherry blush', which looks a lot like Ruth's bike front and back. Of course ever since I've been teased it's 'pink' but as a bloke I don't have a problem with that. But, yeah, I do have an aesthetic problem with the two tone colours. Best stick with one colour. :) My regular bike is a Dawes Galaxy, but as I'm getting older the Raleigh e-bike is preferred during the winter. Neither are great for going places, so it's defo the Brommie if I'm on the move.

Oh my gosh, Ruth, what a lovely video! Colonsay is absolutely my favourite place in Scotland - been there loads of time during the past 30 years. If you can, I thoroughly recommend staying there for a week at least - you obviously managed to see so much during your single day visit, and massive respect for managing to combine Oransay and Kiloran Bay in one visit - but there’s much, much more. The Ardskenish beaches in the south west; the bird cliffs at Pig’s Paradise; Balnahard beach in the far north; Colonsay House woods and gardens; choughs and other rare birds; singing seals - and the seafood evenings at the Pantry. Well worth a prolonged return visit!

I've known for quite a long time there is a Colonsay beer, I've drunk it, on the mainland. Lucky with the weather.......oh the brewery's closed down, how unfortunate. 42% tax beginning @£43,000 takes too much money away from the ordinary public. Over the border in Berwick max tax is 40% beginning @£51,000....which simply does result in restaurants looking visibly better patronised there.

What a great week -- two Ruth videos!!! I'd recommend either electrifying your compact/folding bike -- or getting a smaller eBike -- the more standard eBikes can be large and heavy and you need to conserve space in your camper van. What a beautiful island (pair of, actually) -- and my ears triple perked up when you said *surfing* -- I was an active surfer years ago (East Coast, USA -- not monster waves, but fun) -- and yep -- surfing in Scotland, that would be awesome!!!
@ruthaisling16 сағат бұрын
This bike folds up and I can put it in the foot area or the passenger seat which is great as it’s not in the way in the back of my van. That’s what I like about it but it probably would be better to get a smaller ebike or convert this one!
@aengusmacnaughton137515 сағат бұрын
@@ruthaisling Yep -- electrifying the one that you have shouldn't make it any larger (maybe heavier), but then it will give you more peace of mind that you can bike over more hilly terrain and maybe a bit faster than all manual. That would definitely be a good thing in areas with roads/paths where Ernie is a little large to take with you. Hmmm -- maybe you could name the bike 'Bert'....???? 😁

I used a Brompton for many years when working in London and visiting customers in many UK towns by train. I wouldn’t opt for e-bike it increases the weight, if you run out of battery the bike becomes more of a challenge. Also, the increase in weight makes getting it in and out of the camper so much harder. However, there are some things you can do to the basic Brompton to make it better. 1) Don’t just think because there is air it the tyres it is OK. With small wheels you do really need to have 70psi + in the tyres otherwise it is like cycling uphill even when on the flat. The tiny pump that come with the Brompton is only there as a get you home after a puncture., I use a foot pump. 2) Don’t ride with a rucksack. I see your Brompton has a mounting block on the front. If you have a bag and frame, they are well worthwhile to use them. This lets you put your effort into cycling and not supporting a rucksack. 3) Make sure that the seat post is set so your legs are fully stretched on the pedals. The seat post sometimes creeps down and you end up with bent knees and not able to get best effort into the pedals. It will probably mean you can barely touch the ground when you start and stop. 4) Don’t bring more kit than is absolutely necessary for a day trip but I guess with all the filming there is not too much option. 5) There are a number of tyres available for the Brompton that have less rolling resistance but for short trips I would always go for something that is puncture resistant. In London it was glass then in the country it is thorns that are the enemy. 6) The rack on the back is a mixed blessing, sometimes handy but if badly loaded you bash your heels when peddling, I preferred the bag on the front. As always, a day trip is only a wetter of appetite, well done on packing in what you did. As for WILD perhaps I should have used it in London the hot summers day I hared across on the Brompton to fix an IT problem only to receive a customer complaint to my account manager that I smelt ! No thanks for getting the IT fixed, bhaaa….

The part of the priory with the architecture you liked looked like the courtyard and cloisters. Each little arch at one time would open into a cell, where a monk would do solitary study and prayer. The effigies you compared to mummies were probably tombs. It was very common in the medieval period for wealthy people to enter monateries late in life and dedicate the rest of their lives to God. This was usually accompanied by fairly hefty donations to the order for prayers in perpetuity for their souls. Modern people retire to Florida, medieval people retired to religious orders.

I live in Cape Town in South Africa, so to come to Scotland, is a big international trip, and can be and is, very expensive for us South Africans to travel overseas, yet I don't have to catch any international flights to visit the UK / Scotland as your awesome videos find me and I can enjoy Scotland weekly/monthly and or whenever your next video comes out. I love the fact that you visit the small places, the big places, the places I could not go to and or have thought of visiting. You are a great ambassador for Scotland! Thank you again Ruth and I do look forward to your next video!!!

Nice video, knew very little about Colonsay so very useful to see. Before you buy an e-wheel kit for your brompton, I recommend you try a French folding e-bike called an eovolt which is designed from scratch, so battery is built in to frame, and integrated hub motor which automatically changes gear as you go faster. I tried one at Tiso's in Perth and was very impressed how light, fast and solid it felt for a folding 20" wheel bike. £3000 but had to stop myself because I already have 3 electric and 8 accoustic bikes and wife would not have been pleased). .

We have a beach hut on Dunster Beach, West Somerset and the tidal range is up to 9m or over 29 feet.

I was there last year and it was incredible to see your vid and the drone shots. As well as the gorgeous beaches you normally get them all to yourself. It was fantastic 😊

I used to live in Cocoa Beach, FL for a while and walking on the beach at peak low tide was really great. At high tide, terrible. Loose sand and tons of beachgoers. Nice video!

Ebikes are banned on TfL services, London Underground and buses as they have a habit of catching fire. I'm not sure how widespread the ban is or whether other public transit services are likely to adopt it in the future, but if you ever take your bike on buses or trains it's worth looking into.
@ruthaisling16 сағат бұрын
I had no idea about that, thank you for sharing
@philkfoto15 сағат бұрын
That is untrue. Ebikes are not banned on buses,underground and trains, only e-scooters and e-unicycles. Anyway this law is for London Transport and Ruth is in Scotland.

I went here as a child with a large group of family friends, so much to do on such a small island, there was even a 5 a side match against the locals in some abysmal weather. Also bumped into Tilda Swinton in the hotel.

the bike was a great idea Ruth and another island for us to explore via you you will have to go back and spend more time there, it looks so lovely, so much to explore and this video was such a nice unexpected treat before work on a friday (my least favorite day) the tidal island scares me all the places i have ever lived have 'normal' tides but we we went to Collingwood at the top of the South Island of NZ and pitched our tent right on the waterfront, telling ourselves who needs to go to Fijji -well we woke up the tide was so far out we couldnt even see the water ! we had never seen anything like it, it always amazing to see the British tides like this
@ruthaisling12 сағат бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the surprise Thursday video!! I’m always so amazed at the tides too and I definitely will need to return to this island!

The seaside courses are the best. I looked up colonsay golf club, it's only £5 to play. You can rent some clubs next time Ruth. That would make a great video...

Hoi, Ruth, really interesting to follow. Hope the Scottish Tourist Board take notice about you´re impressive work. Well done. Good to know that it finally worked out with the tide. Greetings, Markus

Some people have fit new cranks with double chain rings for better gearing. You might have to manually change the rings but a simply mod might give you better gearing for hills.

Ruth, lovely tour. I suggest you learn about and try an ebike before making any decisions. Converting comes with issues even if manufacturers provide kit. For the money, I'd consider just buying one if you like them. The generic kit's come with a host of risks I'm told by the industry veterans. Thanks for sharing

I'm from the south of England (Portsmouth to be exact) and your videos remind me of how little I know about these islands. Brilliant job, keep it up
