Maize farming under conservation Agriculture Lugari Kenya
He is saying he expects to harvest 45 bags of maize per acre of 90kg each though he Harvested 49bags later
He does conservation agriculture/farmimg meaning he doesn't do laborious, expensive and degenerative conventional farming. Conservation farming simply means:
1.He does minimum tillage by doing Ripping using using oxen drawn Magoe Ripper though most farmers use Tractor drawn Ripper. And when weeding he still uses minimum tillage by using a shallow weeder which just scrabs weeds though others use selective herbicides
2. After harvesting he rotates Cereal crop with a non Cereal crops mainly legumes
3.after harvesting he leaves the maize stalks to cover soil though others use cover crops
On land preparation cost he uses Magoe Ripper, he says he spends less than $10 (ksh 100 only) per acre while Conventinal land preparation in his area cost more than $60 (ksh 5000 on 1st and 2nd disc ploughing + furrow/holes preparation cost for SHF)
He compares his maize to the imediate neighbours farm under conventional farming and the difference is evident that conservation farming guarantees a farmer better yields provided other Good Agricultural Practices area adhered to including early planning, Proper timing for every activity, choice of right certified inputs, proper crop protection as well as harvesting and post harvest handling etc.
He receives trainings from Farm to Market Alliance Kenya #FTMA #FTMAKENYA and other previous and current stakeholders.

I tried it but used the ox planter...my maize germination was excellent but yellowish and I had to apply more fertilizer. It costed me more. But I learnt that the planting depth was the problem.

That's very good, about 160 bushels per acre. That approaches the average for the American corn belt of 174 bu/ac. That's very good when you consider that the corn belt is black prairie soil and has 15 hour days in the summer.

I went to School in Kakamega and I am wondering why these ideas can't be spread to everyone even if at a cost, perhaps sponsorship. This is one region where peasant farmers do lots of work but harvests are much less than inputs - they get negative value but they do not know. They only count maize harvest per acre, say 6 bags and they are satisfied. Ignorance.

You are so on point. I've tried to explain to my folks thats their is no cost benefit especially in maize farming. Sorghum and cassava does even better. Imagine 1 acre 8 bags and they are so happy but deep down the cost outweighs benefit.

The annoying thing is that the name of the video is in English but they don't speak English in the video why don't they simply write the name in their language so others don't bother

He says he expects 45 bags of maize per hectare from his farm. He is using conservation agriculture which is based on minimum tillage, maximum soil cover and use of herbicides to control weeds. This greatly minimizes farming costs and maximizes returns

This is a farmer explaining how he does it and Infact he got 49bags of 90kg each. More so conservation agriculture optimum is not a one season miracle as benefits increase with consitence and time. But where is your farm?

@@farmerservicecentrefsc9308 I have challenged, followed and practiced such advise to the letter but results are not as exaggerated in these videos. My farm is in Mubende,a corn growing hub in Central Uganda.I call upon someone to challenge me on this.

You don't have to challenge, show your case. Kenyans have michoraisal, they can even get 60bags in an acre

@@nabbutomajorine28 😁😁😁😁Well, the challenge is mine,so whether you want it or not,I have called for a challenge! I have done agriculture for over two decades and what I find nowadays is that there are a lot of misguidance, fake inputs and misleading advisors. Now the danger of these is that they don't give realities of the garden and first time farmers get easily lured only to get disappointed and this to hate agriculture!. Above all, agriculture is something as simple and direct as it is,why would one not come up and challenge the doubting Thomas in me!? The challenge IS ON...

@@zamundaafrica4611 I agree. Although the yield looks good and healthy, that figure looks suspiciously high. In fact, more cobs per plant is not necessarily something to be proud of. It only means the crop was exposed to serious stress, maybe a period of draught. That leads to two smaller cobs, than one big one. That said, we have the plant spacing. The owner should give us the average number of rows per cob, and ears per row, and we can give him the expected output per acre. And that is even assuming he is achieving the minimum required grain drying. Will he take the challenge?
