I rehomed a kitten last year, because she was not settling with my dogs, she kept going for them, the dogs are used to cats but she just seemed to want to be the only pet. Now she is with a friend and is soo happy! Not always bad to rehome, if its better for them and you.

I definitely wish more people talked about stuff like this in the hobby. I only have one snake myself, and I get jealous seeing people with these huge snake collections, but I suspect that a lot of them have regrets about animals that they don’t share with their subscribers. I enjoy this realistic approach to keeping animals. Luckily I have no regrets with my beautiful ball python!

I regretted my bearded dragons. I got one through a classroom grant and another from a rehoming situation. When I got them, I did not understand how difficult it would be to get crickets and keep them alive, and getting super worms in my tiny town with no pet supply store. It is much easier to go to the bigger city once a month to get feeders for my snakes than it was to constantly try to get living insects for the dragons. I was a terrible, terrible cricket caretaker. ...I also hated dealing with the calcium powder. I think this video is super important because when you're an animal lover, you're kind of taught that you don't rehome animals if you love them. You have to be their "furever home." I've had to reteach myself that it's not like that with reptiles and small mammals because if you're not caring for them properly or if you don't have what you need for them to be happy and healthy, then you show your love by letting them have a better life somewhere else. Now I know from experience that I need to stick to reptiles that don't involve insect diets, and just enjoy seeing them at shows and zoos. Ball pythons are where my heart belongs!

You're definitely right about the tegu! That was one of the hardest reptiles to tame because of how intelligent they are! It took about two years for my tegu to become handleable. I tried to rehome him but could not find a home that was capable of providing more than I was, and in an effort to make him more appealing to buyers, I was working with him more and learned how to communicate with him, which essentially accidentally tamed him down so I ended up building an outdoor enclosure and kept him. 😂

Ive seen a couple of these videos now and they have made me feel less guilty for rehoming my ball python. He was my first reptile that i got when i was 16. About a week after I got him i realized he was infested with mites. It took so much time and effort and money to get it under control and he was my only animal. Once we got past that it was great. He had an even temperament as most BPs do. But when he was 3 years old he went on a feeding strike. I assumed it would just last through the winter, but it kept going. I tried everything. Different methods of thawing (he always ate frozen), different heating, different UVB, bigger enclosure, smaller enclosure, more humidity, less, etc. I tried it all. After 8 or 9 months without eating i rehomed him. He hadn't lost any weight, he seemed perfectly healthy. I just couldn't handle my anxiety in regards to him anymore. Him not eating stressed me out astronomically. I felt like a failed keeper. But after two years of sitting on it, I realized my passion wasn't going away, but maybe it lies somewhere else. I found geckos, and I have never been so happy with my reptiles. Thanks for making this video!

There was a time when I seriously thought about rehoming my oldest turtle. I couldn't keep up with the maintenance. I was too busy with college and work, my childhood dog had died, and I was overwhelmed. Pets were the last thing on my mind. I actually tried to find others who would take her, but in the end, I couldn't find anyone I could trust. So I ended up keeping her, upgraded her to a 75 gallon, oh yeah, and then I got another turtle 😂. I fell in love all over again. And now I have a Bearded Dragon and am considering a fourth reptile.

I appreciate you making this video there are too many people out there (or are just an overly representative vocal population) who demonizes anyone that either regrets or for whatever needs to re home an animal both me and my roommate were in this situation. In my case was a ultra defensive sand boa that was also a terrible eater one of the reptile stores we frequented re homes reptiles, this was also the place I got him from. The owner tried to make things harder for for me (was in school at the time) and “teach me a lesson” which is the point where people may get frustrated or desperate (ex. Release into the wild, not that I did or would do this.). My roommate’s situation was that his hognose snake got sick and to pay the vet bills needed to sell a large portion of his animals, which he sold to the same reptile store and hailed like a saint. We both needed to re home yet the responses were drastically different, my point is people are imperfect and make mistakes or wind up in bad situations. I hope people in the community learn from this video and gain some understanding and compassion as sometimes helping someone out has more of an impact than penalizing them, sorry for the paragraph.

My biggest regret was my first leopard gecko. I got him from Pet Smart, I had him for two years and one day he just croaked. I suspect the culprit was reptile carpet since I had no clue at the time that reptile carpet could harbor so much bacteria. For my latest leopard gecko I have kept her on a paper towel substrate up until recently where I swapped her to dirt and playsand. She is a very happy gecko and far more active than my Pet Smart gecko was, but I still love and miss him.

During quarantine I got more reptiles than I should have. Three leopard geckos, two tortoises and a pink tongue skink. I realized I wasn’t giving some of them their best lives. I gave two leopard geckos back to the breeder. The Hermann’s tortoise was not thriving so I sent her to a rescue. The Russian tortoise was awesome and deserved a better outdoor enclosure than I could provide so I gave him to a herpetologist at the zoo. I’m down to my original leopard gecko and the pink tongue skink. I’m confident I’m giving them a good life.

Uromastyx was definitely the most boring reptile I've ever owned. PS - On the opposite end, some of the most interesting hands-off lizards I've ever owned were a pair Sceloporus sp. (desert spiny lizards) as they were always super active and such a delight to watch in a desert-style terrarium, and a community of Asian Grass Lizards in a tropical tank. They were like a pack of velociraptors and bred like crazy! Not sure if these lizards are still available in the pet trade but they are certainly underrated.

I regret getting a crestie. He was my first reptile I ever got, and I chose a crestie because they were so highly recommended on KZbin. But he's very boring, in my opinion, (which is why I named him Colin Robinson) and doesn't really like to be taken out of his enclosure. He's able to be handled fine, he just seems to hate every second of it, so I rarely take him out to handle anymore. I much prefer animals who are fun to interact with, like Leos and beardies, so that's been more of my criteria to focus on as I've added more reptiles to my collection.

I am so glad you put together this video. Now I don't feel like it is just me in these situations. I unfortunately had to re-home, actually the guy at the reptile shop took my BTS. I worked almost a year with her and she always was defensive. Just trying to get her in the transport box was a catastrophe. I was super bummed about it because I wanted a dopey potato. Maybe in the future I will, but this one was not for me. I also have no luck with Pac-Man frogs. I had 2 and both died. I keep so many other species of frogs with no issues.

My BTS is my regret too. He was a juvenile when I got him but he’s always been hissy. I upgraded him to a 5’ enclosure and now all he does is stay in his hides. He’s eating well but is totally antisocial. So not fun to handle and not even a good display animal. 😏
@hondacivet Жыл бұрын
I love blue tongues but yeah I think their friendliness is a bit overstated. It does vary a LOT by individual. They are all generally a bit hissy as babies but some of them really don't ever chill out. They are also a little harder to handle when they are adults because they get so big and clumsy. They can't hang on your shoulder like a gecko or beardie can. You need to fully support their big potato bodies, which is inconvenient but hilarious. That said, they are very curious and smart, and most adults are pretty chill, so I think it'd be worth trying again later if you find an individual with a good personality.

Uromastyxs have big personalities, u need to watch when he is comfortable with you. I have 2 atm, one is afraid of everything, but once he is on my hands he calm down. Second one is like puppy, he sleep on my chest, recognize me and my wife, poop only outside of terarium- he waiting near terarium doors when he wants to go poop. If we not at home he stay 2-3 days without pooping, while he is able to hold it. When we open terarium he climb on our hands. He watch us when we eat and eat at the same time too etc. He also recognize his name or tone of our voice when we call him. Before sleep he usually wait for pet and after that go sleep. :)

I think that so much of this comes down to the individual personality of the animal. They really do vary, just like people! Of course socialization plays a big part too. I had a boa that HATED me, but adored my roommate. When she moved out I sold her the boa for what I paid, plus all the accessories. On the other hand, one of the most sociable and chill lizards I've ever met was a Sudanese Plated.

Basilisks! I had a pair of them back in the early 90s. There was no internet, so there were no good care guides. Those were the most insane lizards I’ve ever seen. You walk by their enclosure and they’d bounce off the walls trying to get away from you. The male got out one day and he displayed that speed they’re so well known for. Took a minute to get ahold of him, then he opened that gaping maw of a mouth and used his razor blade teeth to open my hand up. In hindsight, I was clueless about how to take care of these animals, but that male was an absolute jerk. No way you’re holding either of them. Rehomed them and bought a lutino cockatiel instead. Much better pet.

I kind of regret all of the reptiles I've owned in my youth but that's more because I wasn't as educated as I should have been. The only reptile I've owned in my 'responsible adult' life that passed was a Mexican Alligator Lizard. They are absolutely beautiful but this little guy was afraid of life. It took a while to get him eating and I learned the hard way that they are very susceptible to fungal infections. Even after taking him to the vet and getting all of the meds he did not make it. After the whole experience I learned a lot about how I could have corrected my mistakes but it was extremely sad and a bit traumatizing.

I'm glad you're talking about this! No one ever tells you that just because someone you know is passionate about an animal, doesn't mean you will be. But you don't know that until you get them. Animals I thought would be my favorite turned out to not be and ones I thought would not be my favorite have turned out to be my favorite of all. But the one I regret most of all was my very first reptile. A lavender corn snake. I was sold a female but it turned out to be a male. The reason I knew that was because the snake stopped eating and got to the point it had to be force-fed and the vet saw evidence of it being a male. I fought for years trying to get him to eat normally and he never did.

I have a leopard gecko that I regret getting. I was so close to getting a beardy but settled on the gecko for my first lizard as thought would be alot easier to manage cause smol. She's 3 years old now, and she still bolts at the sight of me, never comes out unless the rooms silent and nobodies in. I had to set up one of those doorbells with a camera which activates when there is motion to even see the bloody thing. The first six months were great, I handled her near daily and she was always climbing all over me and exploring, and then she managed to escape her enclosure. Thankfully she only managed to hide from me for 24hrs (left a warm hide out which I found her in the following eve) and ever since she's been incredibly skittish at the sight of anyone. It was such a drastic change of behaviour overnight I even took her to the vets to make sure nothing had happened during her great escape. Persisted for another year and a half trying to start again, hand in enclosure, speak softly, no grabbing but nothing has worked. For the past year I've limited to daily water changes, feedings (which she will take food but instantly bolts into her hide after shes got a full belly) and poop scooping. Accepted she doesn't want to be touched/handled and trying to give her the best life I can but I'm same as you, I really want a pet I can interact with and handle. Sorry turned into abit of a rant! I still love her but i find it amazing how these animals can all have different personalities and what you say about the tegu and essentially empty having an empty viv resonates with me.

I planned on dart frogs getting back into keeping, bought the tank, planted the plants, added the bugs, but made a fatal mistake: I bought an arboreal enclosure for terrestrial frogs. Luckily I thought on my feet and remembered the setup is pretty much identical to tokays with a slight difference in humidity and temp. So I went to a convention, there was one single tokay with a tank for 200. Didn't want the tank, but the lizard was so cool and docile I bought it anyway and ended up with an extra tank I didn't need. Literally the second I put him in my bioactive setup he went from Dr jeckyl to Mr Hyde and has been the living embodiment of hatred for the past year. I just rescued 2 leopard geckos from a vacant house I'm renovating and it reminded me what a docile lizard is like (although I moved away from leopard geckos because they're kind of basic). I think my plated lizard is so cool! He doesn't whip and bite but he doesn't like being handled and he runs for cover often. We made a break through today though. He ate from tongs and didn't hide when he saw my hand. I've had him 2 years yesterday!

I've got a weirdly hands-off beardie. Rescued him from a highschool (poor diet, MBD, stunted, etc) so that probably put a damper on being picked up.

I bought an absolutely gorgeous adult male firefly ball python for a pet. I didnt know he was rack kept his entire life and was only a breeder, not socialized. I moved him into a gorgeous 4x2x2 with a custom backround, where he promptly refused to eat for 7 months until I put him back into a small enclosure. Handling him stresses him out to much, so I don't handle him unless necessary for cleaning and weigh ins. He's gorgeous and well mannered, but due to his stress levels, he's not handle-able

spiny tailed iguana, red eared sliders, alligator snapping turtle, and Reticulated python. Iguana was mean, red eared sliders get big and messy live forever. Alligator snapping turtle gets way to bi as well as a reticulated python. even in a 12' cage it just seems cramped. Idk.

My red eared slider, he hates everyone and everything, gorgeous paludarium but he drowned a lizard and frog, also has a foot infection that he keeps reopening. Also bites every time he's out, which is very difficult when he needs shots in his front foot.

When I was little I got a veiled chameleon and no one in my family knew what was needed to take care of it so we saw problems really quickly and he didn't make it. Its been a long time since I have had him and I look back and realize how bad of a choice it was to get that animal because of how high maintenance they are.

My biggest reptile regret was a Nile monitor that taught me that I wasn’t as ready as I thought I was for one. He was rehomed to someone that has more experience and he’s living a much better life. I do see him from time to time and always greeted with a rough tail whip.

Respect. There's too many people who'd just try to tough it out with an animal few can handle. (For their ego or whatever). Glad you set him on a good path.

This is a very good video and subject in general. It's important to hear it's okay to regret and I believe many feel the same way I do; I feel ashamed to admit I do regret some of the animals I have had. My 1st corn snake and my 1st ball python are both something I regret I got. Both were very beautiful, very tame animals and chill af but I was not patient enough to wait until I found snakes with morphs I really love. Also in general I sort of regret I didn't go with species that are diurnal from the get go. Now I have a leopard gecko and 2 ball pythons whom I see only when feeding them meanwhile I can spend hours in front of my takydromus smaragdinus enclosure and enjoy watching my pair goofing off.

I just got my first reptile, a crestie, I love cresties, about 10 or 12 weeks ago, and I regret getting this lizard. It was born June 22, 2022, and it's still 5g, hasn't put on a gram since I got it. It only eats 2xs a week for some freakin reason. Otherwise, seems perfectly healthy. It's active, seems secure. It sleeps on a knot on a stick jutting out of the side of my custon viv background right in front of the doors, all day, or in the corner behind it's hide, and even then, it comes out right after lights out. I kept it in a tub for a month, to make sure it was eating and pooing. It was. I asked Adam Wickens if it could go straight into the full size, and he gave me the go ahead. Great guy, Mr Wickens. Y'all should check him out. I hope this tiny little turd starts growing. I can't afford another one lol, not after spending freaking hundos and hundos on the vivarium. Bioactive costs a fortune. Later.

I regretted a few of my reptiles when I was just starting out. My first reptile was a beardie (rehomed when I realized I couldn't sustain the bills). Then I stopped owning lizards. A few years later, I tried taking care of snakes. I was overly cautious. If I had known how relatively simple the care was, I would've skipped Kenyan Sand Boas, Western Hognose, and Corn Snakes altogether and jumped straight into BCI or Madagascar Tree Boas, etc...

Mine is our bearded dragon. It’s tame and a good pet, but it didn’t get as big we thought it would. Not to mention we spent a bunch on a 120 gallon tank. We have since gotten into leachie geckos (Which I find a lot more interesting)

So we got a bearded dragon in August 2022 she was a baby. I don't regret getting her but I wish we had went with a male.. we do not plan to breed ever so now she is gravid and brumating. Now I'm worrying everyday and going to the vet once a month, not very fun but it's experience and I love her all the same. Bearded dragons, in my opinion, are not a starter pet if you don't do the research. Thank you for your videos, they help A TON..

I got a Texas Rat Snake at the Hamburg Expo. She is wild caught, but was only $40. She is very defensive and hates being handled. I think the musk is worse than the bite! That being said though, she's a great eater, and she's healthy. Yeah, I'd like a more handleable animal, but I have several other snakes that are great for handling. So there is some regret, lol. However, it's been an experience!

Sudan Platted Lizards. I loved them. They had such fun personalities and enjoyed watching us. However they were an impulse buy. I knew a little about them from a video I had watched on KZbin but never thought I'd see them in real life. Then we did at an expo. My husband and son thought they were really cool. We handled them and they were so calm. My son carried them out of the expo on his shoulder. Normally I wouldn't bring an a pet home without more research and an enclosure ready but I got caught up in the moment. The regret was that they were our first desert reptile and they loved digging so they kicked up a ton of sand/dirt/dust that triggered my allergies. Eventually it got too much for me and I rehomed them. Super fun to watch and interact with but I won't be getting anymore dessert type reptiles.

I’m old LOL. Tried the reptile thing in the late 80’s early 90’s when my kids were little. 1st was a probably wild caught 2 1/2-3 ft iguana. Was scared to death of everyone and everything. Would bite, run and tail whip whenever you just looked at it. Of course the proverbial “it’ll only grow to the size of tank” wasn’t true. Everyone was afraid of it and now I know taking care of it wrong, it went back to the pet store. Next bought for like $50 from another friend that had a small pet store (they didn’t know anything either) a dwarf caimen. No way should I have had that! Had small kids under 8 years old, no info about what it needed or how to care for it. Had it in a 50 gal tank with a screen top that the cat kept jumping on and falling into. Had to grab it with kitchen tongs to put in bathtub to clean tank out. Had no clue how big and aggressive they can get. Went back to friends store. I’m so glad there is an abundance of knowledge ready at your fingertips nowadays. Since then I’ve had a sulcata ❤️, beardies and another iguana as well as a few exotic mammals. I wish I were 25 years old again and could start over with knowledge and smarter friends but my daughter and grandson are picking up the torch 🥰

I just got my third uromastyx. I also have two hognoses and one rosy boa. They take a really long time to build up interactions, but they come around. They are very skittish by nature, but I still have more physical interactions with them than my sneks, which are burrowed most of the time. To each their own, but if I had the room for it and less of a social life, I would have a dozen uros by now. They're so easy, don't stink and are hilarious. They're like little puppies that don't necessarily like to be held. All that said, a full grown, wild caught uromastyx is probably going to be a lot more defensive. If you ever come back around, and I do think you misjudged them, you want a cb baby.

We haven’t got any reptiles yet but we did raise 2 red eyed tree frogs from tadpoles. One froglet never thrived and passed away. The second one seemed to be doing ok until it escaped. Still not sure how that happened…. I think it might had to do with a seven year old boy…. Anyway, it was a great experience but I think waiting a couple years and not living in a desert would have been better. Also they were kind of boring in the day since they are nocturnal and I had a poor success rate in getting fruit fly cultures to thrive and I didn’t like messing with them.

Not a reptile but kind of behaves like one - I regret my pet mice a bit. They were pet shop mice, not socialized, need a huge space (they're in a 4x2x4) and they're nocturnal. Initially when I got them I was trying to get them socialized and wanted them out every day to play in their playpen but the reality is they're basically feral even a year later They dug tunnels in their substrate and I see them out maybe 20 minutes a day before I go to bed. They don't even want to come out to play if I leave the lid open, they're just happy where they are - hiding in their huge enclosure.

I regret getting my bearded dragon for the same reason that you had for your tegu! First got him and he did fine for like 9 months then he went into brumation for some reason even tho his conditions are perfect and I have 2 other beardies that are in the same room and are completely fine! He wakes up for like a month or 2 and then stops eating and hides for another few months. I’ve had him for like 3 years now and it’s like he’s on life support or something I just can’t figure it out.

Parakeets. I watched an animal show where the host said they were so easy to train to be held and the first time I had one out of the cage it flew behind and somehow into the fridge. Took us forever to get it out, and then I was scared to try again. Plus for the two smallest pets besides guppies, they made the biggest mess. Our apartment was covered with feathers and bird seed! Don't think I will ever get another bird.

i got a baby Chinese Water Dragon because nobody in the store knew anything about it, and though neither did i there was more of a chance that i could give the care he needed. he's a young adult and confirmed male which means he's going to be beautiful. even youtubers that i respect get things wrong like the fact Clint's Reptiles said they don't drop tails. luckily mine did as a baby. but they are so cool and if you can make space for them and are okay with a baby for 6ish months they are so worth it.
