I'm building my home from scratch with very little experience and this week I'm making some MORE changes ... sigh. It's okay though, change orders happen in a build all the time. I'm just the one having to "renovate" and change up my DIY home build myself instead of paying a premium for a contractor to do it! On top of this, I'm doing some more electrical wiring. Putting in mostly all of my lights and figuring out where to put them all!
Thanks for being here!

They make pancake boxes that are only a 1/2” deep that will fit in places where you have a stud or rafter. That way you could center your tub chandelier

These are more for smaller and lighter fixtures like pot lights in cabinets or floating shelves! I wouldn’t trust it as much and I think I’m going to switch my octagon out for a fan box for more support over the tub :). It’s only about 1” off centre after you account for drywall and tiles!

Hi Biata. I would not worry about changing your mind and locations of things. Architects do that way more often than I see you do it. In my professional capacity, I deal with architects and engineers all of the time. They have a tunnel vision about their projects, and it is difficult to make them see things that they have messed up. I see them because I am the hands on guy at the jobsite with almost 50 years of experience. When you tell them about a problem, architects will tell you that they designed it and just do it that way. Engineers will tell you that the computer spit the number out so it is correct. You have to fight to make them see their errors. I had an architect once design a stair tower at the end of a building that was truly an architect's wet dream. I told him multiple times through the project that his stair had an opening to the outside but he would not see it and said build it the way he drew it. We did so and when it came time for his final inspection before his release, he was handed the keys to the building so he could walk through. I knew that he was so proud of his stair tower that he would go there to enter his building. I went to the opening that he had designed into the stair tower and entered the building. I waited inside as he unlocked the door and surprised him by being inside of his locked building. I introduced myself and asked him if he would like to see the opening to the outside that he designed. His precious stair tower had to be torn down and redesigned and rebuilt at a pretty good cost. This just shows you that even professionals do not see everything when it is on paper. Fortunately, in today's world we have 3D BIM models that we do at my compay that can show everyone what is going where. Each trade gets their own model that get combined, and we can find any overlaps of material. I'm sorry to say that the price of all of the software involved would be impractical for a brave self home builder such as yourself. You are doing a great job. Don't let the little bumps bother you. Big bumps occur in the professional building world.

Happy Mother’s Day! You’ve probably already thought about this or someone may have mentioned it but I’ll bring it up anyway. Try to identify all the places you’ll have towel racks, toilet paper roll holders, curtain rods, hand rails, etc….. and install blocking so that all those items can be mounted in wood and not just sheet rock.

I brought this up in the past and after watching today I have to bring it up again. Maybe it will save some trouble for others. If you put a 1-1/2” pipe in a 2x4 wall you end up with a 2x2” stud or less realistically. Planning out where the plumbing is and making thicker walls to accommodate the size pipe you use. 6” wall for 1-1/2” pipe. 8” wall for 2” to 4”. And so on. You don’t have to worry about screws, nails, and weakening the structure. Especially in a bathroom. Insulate and “noise” is cancelled. 😊
@SimpleLivingwithBiata
@SimpleLivingwithBiata 16 күн бұрын
I'm going to put these fancy nail plate but also wall strengthening plates where I notched out the studs to fix the strength issue! 1 1/2" ABS is allowed in 2x4" walls here luckily :). I just have to order the fancy stud strengthening plates!
@flowerstone
@flowerstone 16 күн бұрын
I get it. Not saying you are doing it wrong at all. Me personally, I’ve always liked doing better than code. But that’s doing it for years and seeing what works better. Those plates are fine but be aware that screws can go through them. If you use a nail gun they can also go through them. If you are hand nailing drywall then you can feel when you hit the plate. Just mark where the plates are and avoid those places. 😊 You have done great work even with the ups and downs. I like your drive and have enjoyed watching your house develop. ❤

@@SimpleLivingwithBiata He is correct but you'll be fine with your plan. I actually added 1 1/2" furring to an existing wall to accomplish this when the original builders -- kid you not -- just wrapped the rock around the dumb 4" pipe, which looked horrendous.

I first have to say Happy Mother’s Day. What you are doing is amazing,learning as much as you have on the fly while building your DREAM HOUSE. If you see something that you want to change then change it. Better now than after the drywall is on. As we called it in my trade we called it Engineering change and it cost tons of money it cost you a couple of 2 x 4s. My wife made me a shirt. Diemakers were created because engineers and engineers need heroes too. Works for home builders too. You are a HERO!!

Hello Biata, with these changes "on the way" I don't want to crow but I don't know if I will live to see the moment when your house will be in use ( already 78 on the neck ). When starting a new section of work in a given week, you should already have the whole plan buttoned up to the last button, and not only in your head, but above all on paper. In the form of a specific drawing with a lot of notes. So good luck and health to your whole family.

The guys are right about the ceiling fan pancake. They can support a lot of weight and they’re UL approved for ceiling fans which have a heavy motor and moving parts. Most importantly you’re centered on the window, the only one who will know it’s off in the other direction is you, and if someone points it out you have 2 thing to say, what were you doing in my tub and get out of my house😂😂

I got a flat box that'll go to the bottom of your stud that you can put your cone. Type scon or chandelier on it, and it covers the box. Because the box is only like a 1/2. First of all - a Happy Mothers Day to you n family - hope y'all enjoy y'all's day n activities planed. You could just left the studs in place n bump the wall out the distance you needed and sacrifice overall square footage in both rooms. Next remember to go over an inch on wider for your rock and maybe tiles. And space / clearance for the device your going to use. You did not have to remove the whole stud. Just cut where to need to n add where need to. Or could left as is bump it out a whole 3 1/2 inches plus rock. And now your space is a that much narrow than before. That way do not have to redo or move your pipes.

They do make a fan box that is 1.5" in the middle and standard on both sides which is made to hold up a fan's weight and you could attach it in the middle of your ceiling truss.

@@SimpleLivingwithBiata No as it is notched out to fit a 1.5" stud or truss with only .5" in the middle where the truss is and deeper on both sides to fit up in the sides of the truss for wires.

Biata your boxes don't always have to horizontal they can be vertical. This goes for switches n outlets. You just turn the boxes on it's side , that is it. Remember that when you wire your above your counter tops. And you can just double gaine boxes if necessary. You can also save the amount of switches if you combine one of your lights with the exhaust fan. Reducing the amount home runs to the panel box ( one less circuit ). Just do not go over the amout amps at your breaker, 15 / 20 amps. If am not mistaken five outlets per 15 amp breakers. But use 20 amps breaker for the kitchen and maybe a dedicated 20 amp for the refrigerator. Also if using an electric stove cook top oven, that where you use 10/3 , same for dryer hvac water heater plus a double pole 30 amp breaker for anything that's pulls 240.

Smoke detectors need to be at least 4 inches from the walls and if you have beams you need to mount the smokes on the beam and not in the cavity. Also smokes should be in common places like a hallway where bedrooms are, Stay 20 feet from any fuel source like gas range, fuel fired furnace but you have that wood unit outside...and in kitchens bathrooms id install 135F heat detectors if you can on that same smoke circuit. I sleep very good at night my house has smokes in every room, bedroom , hallway, my utility room, heat detectors in my attic (rate of rise) also 135F heat detectors in the bathrooms and kitchens. sorry for all this information but its life safety so I elaborated quite a bit

Yeah, but you really don’t know what you want until you really see it and get close to the final assembly on what you want it’s hard to picture things in the drawings but once you get closer to finishing then you usually figure out what you want go ahead and change things if it’s easy, no problemkeep up the good work

I sincerely hope for you and your family, that you don't get stuck in a '"nightmare of opportunities" due to sudden changes in interior design. If you want to change everything right at the end, you will never get finished. Right now you create more work for yourself...... or so it seems. I would make some outlets in appropriate places in each room and install lamps with wire running visibly from those. What if you change your mind in 5 years about the placing of lamps...?? Then you will have to have a few visible wires anyway.... you cannot just rip the walls down then..... I wish you all the best, and I hope you finish your frame soon, so that you get some wall surfaces up.

That'd what I did when I remodeled my mom's on-suite. Was most talked about by realtors and prospective buyers . When I asked if they minded if I took that chandelier with when the house sold by buyers said they loved it
