The butterfly has built in release points much like the bowline. The two bites on the sides can always be cinched back to free enough line to undo the knot. I use this knot at work and even after the line was pulled taught by a crane and bent a 1in solid steal latch the knot was still able to be undone by hand using this method.

We actually learned to tie random knots at my Highschool before we went on a class camping trip, and this was one of them. Our teacher let us use some of the knots to tie him to his chair. I learned a different way to tie than what was shown- make a loop and give it a twist in the same direction (right over left) to make a figure 8, fold it in half towards the back and pull the top of the 8 under the whole and pass through the bottom of the 8 front to back, then pull to tighten. The top loop of the 8 becomes your finished loop, so adjust the size in the beginning depending on how big you need your finished loop to be. Different path, same results. I use this knot on jobsites all the time. Incredibly simple and just as useful. Cheers!

Nice! The reason it’s called the *Alpine* butterfly is that this is the knot that’s tied throughout ropes during glacier expeditions - when you fall into a crevasse, the rope will cut into the edge and a knot like this will hopefully snag and help your partner hold your fall.

if you want it to be double knot then just wrap it more times when you begin and then take double when you begin with the "under-over-under". It's a really strong tighten-knot and also easy to untie.

This is IMHO one of the single most useful knots to know. (It's also really good for creating a loop at the end of a rope which absolutely won't slip or tighten up when put under strain.) If you only learn one other knot besides the typical granny/square knot, learn this one. It's really easy to do and can be used in so many situations for so many things.

I learned this knot, and it's one of my favorites. You don't even need to wrap it around your hands. You can also do it even when the ends are tied up. (As long as there is a little slack) You make an 8 with the rope (one twist to make a big circle, and twist the circle in the middle to make two circles). Then bend the tip of the top circle of the 8 over the line, and then pull the tip through BOTH circles. I use this to make the handles when I need them, or to take the slack up on my tent lines.
