Suspension is a common issue on a GTO. Once you fix it, it'll be fine. if you fix it up, you'll get double or triple the money easy.

Pedders do a full suspension kit for it along with poly bushes. Easy to work on too. Get it mechanically squared away and throw a new screen on it. They're under appreciated, but here even rough ones fetch £5-6k. If you fancy a challenge, you can make the running gear fit a Catera...

Randy, I saw this “dent puller” that was designed to pull dents w/o the need for filling and repainting. I immediately thought about you and all the hail dents. LOL. The next thing I see is a guy complaining that it worked on the dents on his Honda but did pull paint. Thought that might still be a good consideration for you. I had a similar issue with my water heater. Pilot light wouldn't stay lit. Turned out it was trash on the burner which was preventing the flame from staying lit. Ended up removing the burner assembly, dumped the trash on top of the burner, and reassembled. It's been working perfectly for the last year and a half. Start with that before throwing the parts cannon at it.

Why am I not surprised that the GTO was a great drive? She's a Holden, that's why! You had it close when you called it a Commodore, but the Commy was the four door sedan; the Monaro is the two door coupe. You'd have one of the first of the VZ-based units being a 2004 model and yes, they are designed to go round corners at speed....and often sideways. Back her off going into the corner, then feed her the onions just as you turn the wheel, break the rear loose and just steer that puppy in the direction you want to go. She'll hold the line for as long as you want or snap back straight when you lift - whichever your preference. She can be a burbling cruiser, a straight line screamer or a corner chewing monster - whichever takes your fancy at the time - and there's room enough in it for four adults to be seated comfortably as she eats up the miles. They stick to the road like sh-- to a blanket and I have not known another car like it to drive.....and wish I had never sold mine. Down here (I'm in New Zealand....a little country to the east of Oz), the Monaro still commands big bickies. If I could have grabbed that car for $5k in US dollars, it's only $7k in my money, which is about a tenth of what a good GTO is worth even with big miles. 170k miles is 274k kilometres and at that distance, she's just run in and now developing the proper horses. You'd get another hundred thou out of her easy - plenty of time to become bored with it (if that is ever possible). I had to sell mine for cashflow reasons, but I would have it back in an instant if I could pay what I sold it for! If I had just managed to pick your one up, I'd fix the exhaust, check / remedy the leaking rack / power steering hoses, tidy up the trim, strip the tint and get it redone, then clean and buff (but not polish) that paintwork to see how bad she really is.....but then I'd be out in it every chance I got to clock up as many miles while listening to that beautiful 5.7 litre soundtrack! The beating the body has taken could be sorted quickly and simply with a layer of filler and some paint chucked at it by Maako, but I'd be trying the paintless dent repair options first. Down here in its current condition, that's still a $20k ($US 14500) car at least - and parts are still easy to find and plentiful. (We have the same issue finding parts for US rolling stock as you would for the Aussie Tank.) They are a lovely car to own, turn heads everywhere and bring smiles wherever you go.....especially on the face of the driver. Keep it for a little while - it's an easy project, you will make money on it and (most of all) you KNOW you want to keep driving the beast, don't you?? All this talk is seriously making me consider making you an offer and importing it for myself! All the best.

1. Fix the safety and reliability. 2. Fix the rest of the mechanicals. 3. Stitch up the interior. 4. Get rid of the messed up window tint. You now have a “Great Time Orgasm” driver, beater, parts chaser, whatever. Somebody in an earlier comment coined the term “Golf Ball Edition.” BRILLIANT! Hand paint that on the right front fender, and leave all the dings alone. What would it cost you to do that? What are you going to find for that outlay that could give you the GTO you’ve always wanted, have that incredible sound, make you money, and be a tax write off as a business expense? If the dents get to you, take a peek at certain videos of Vice Grip Garage and Uncle Tony’s Garage, among others, to see real world mechanics learn and perform DIY paint and body work. If it were my car, I would try to find a later model hood, which has a more aggressive appearance. Even if I did nothing to it at all right now, I would definitely keep it. There is no telling what the future holds, but it’s not that big a risk financially to hang on to. Thanks for all your videos; I really appreciate the content, and respect all the hard work you put into them.

The Aussie Holden Monaro is the car the Pontiac GTO was made from. I saw the Monaro’s on my last trip to Australia in 2002,,,, a really beautiful car. My dad and I were driving around eastern Victoria planting corn the same time a few people from Car and Driver were test driving a Monaro in the same area so we might have passed each other.
