I just heard this for the first time and I can't stop playing it. It is one of the purest love songs I've ever heard, sung by a favorite singer of mine. It brings tears and chokes this guy up but I can't get enough of it. When he started singing it was stunning to hear his still robust and expressive voice, and his explanation of what the song means to him is so touching. I read that he met his future wife when he was 12 years old, and his deep sense of loss is revealed in this song. Tom, to me this is your best work! Thank you.

Lost my little girl to cancer. As a daddy, I always fixed things, as well. It was the most helpless feeling in the world, knowing that I couldn’t fix it for her. My spouse died when he had just turned 50. I felt so lost and this song says it all. I didn’t want to go on living but I had to because I had a young child. So I carried on and kept the faith. God got me through. You never really get over it, you just learn to endure it when the waves of grief wash over you. The last email I got from him was a simple “I love you”. He had no idea it would be his last words to me but they were my greatest comfort in the days and years since his passing.
