The importance of waiting for our kids brains to be READY before we teach them to read. Please open! Edited to add research I cite and other helpful things. GOSH, there is so much more to say about this but I didn't want to make it too long! If anything is unclear please do ask in the comments. Please no mean comments - trust that I have researched this thoroughly and am trying to do the very best for my children.
I want this to be a reminder to unschooling parents to trust the mechanics of the brain, to let your children rest in their right brain for as long as is needed. There's also a bit of a Day In The Life squished in the middle of here too: I wanted to show what "natural" learning looks like. It isn't chopped up and parcelled out. This is maths. Now this is physical education. Now this is geography. If left to it, a child's learning goes long and deep. Children build a container for their learning journeys that can last for hours, twisting and turning through new skills and different learning methods, touching upon a myriad of different subjects, but with a grace that reveals a far more integrated perspective of the world.

A few people are claiming that the left brain / right brain dichotomy is a myth… actually, the idea that it is a myth, is a myth :P Yes, it has been exaggerated and simplified - people aren’t “left brained” or “right brained” as has been claimed in the past. But what is uncontentious is that the left hemisphere holds certain functions and the right hemisphere holds certain functions. So for most people language is a left hem activity, and thinking internally and organisationally lights up that side of the brain too. The right hem is where emotions tend to sit, and thinking widely, outside of our selves.
