taco meat I guess it’s not the same anymore because the first gen IS was basically a rebadged Altezza with a more luxurious interior and it was really good for what it is as an affordable sports sedan Everything changed after that but the IS F is really good bested the C63 and M3 Hopefully the new IS is more engaging to drive and maybe an IS F could return

I liked the rear of the previous IS a lot more than this one... In this design they are trying to make a combination of the ES and The UX in one car, which from my point of view is not that good. I dislike this rear.

I think tour front end redo was spot on. The spectacular thing about the refreshed IS is that it almost perfectly toes the line of restraint and overstyled. I think the Lexus Spindle design language is really starting to come into its own. Cars like the IS, RC, LS, and LC are striking. Older models like the NX and RX are really gonna benefit from a redesign with the current softer yet still striking lines.

@@Big.W. Family resemblance between the luxury mark and the parent company isn't supposed to exist. Family resemblance within the company, yes. The fact this is basically the same tired platform from like 2006 along with giving it "Toyota" headlights is very disappointing. The fine details and lines of the exterior are a stylistic mess but it does look more cohesive than the last gen. Interior looks last gen, because it is. Overall this is going to cost Lexus some sales, and they know that, but they don't care. They just killed the GS and the IS isn't their bread and butter. Toyota is low effort now, hence why no new exciting engines or platforms are arriving, no investment in anything original or different of their own, sharing and using others for design (Subaru, Mazda, BMW). Yeah, they lost their soul.

About rear trunk, I think what Lexus is doing here is they’re using reflections and shadows of the shape to give almost subliminal image of Spindle grille, which was also very evident in the LF-CC Concept which the production IS is based on. Lexus really likes to play around and experiment with shadows and reflections, and give hidden messages within the shape. I think they’ve done that very exercise here

I am a car designer as well and I know you like boxy designs that are simple from the 80s , but there’s nothing wrong with change I think car design is a lot more better now than it has been in the last 4 decades 80s-00s cars were just so boring but now In the 2020s cars have more life and personality again . Lexus' L Finesse design language is about deliberate and sharp angles to create different colours and and shapes in the light. When people say 'a car looks better in real life' this is very true for Lexus. While I quite like your redesign as it makes it look more cohesive, I feel in real life it would lose that visually striking impact with natural light reflecting off the body in all sorts of angles.
@stevemanninghomeinsight604 жыл бұрын
Wow. That’s amazing. Lexus should hire you!! You pointed out things that really made the lines and flow better. I wanted to include a pic of my 2nd gen here because I wanted your opinion on the door lines, I think they are better than on this reinvention. Also interesting that this model goes back to 2nd gen straight taillight versus that 3rd gen drip look. I’m sure you are aware of this but for anyone who may not know Lexus does put their L shape into many aspects of the car, it’s almost subliminal until you see it! On the second gen it’s the convergence of the rear door and rear windshield/roof. Finally I love how the IS looks like a stretched out coupe, it’s a beaut!! Looks like a car 10x it’s price.

So, you are making its front end look more like a Veloster. It's definitely an improvement. I am not a fan at all of Toyota's/Lexus' "all over the place" over-styling of its cars. The styling usually makes no sense at all.

Lexus (like Toyota) is refining his overstyle to a point that, ever its still a bit overstyled, looks great. And this IS is a very clear example of what im talking about. Loving It even It has some weird details (I was expecting you to talk about that tiny cut in the headlights). Great video!!!
@Rage17323 жыл бұрын
It almost seems like Lexus wanted to give a “wide body” look to the rear to emphasize the haunches of the car. I agree, though, that it made the rear side a little messy and confusing. I do especially like what you did with the headlight area and the lower strip. The result was much more dramatic.

I just discovered you from this post. DAMN! I use Revit and SketchUp to design buildings, but others I work with use Photoshop and Lumion to work magic. I envy your skills! I was thrilled to watch you work, and since the first day I laid eyes on this new Lexus IS, I couldn't stop looking - out of discomfort - at the front lower fascia, the swoopy door scoops and linework over the rear wheel arch and the Chris Bangle trunk with droopy tail lights. In my opinion, these are all incorrectly proportioned and rendered. Toyota/Lexus' drive to put more emotion into their designs has me feeling uneasy with all the swoops, incongruous lines and melted plastic in a wind tunnel aesthetic. See the current Toyota Avalon's front grill... it's so wrong! So, I like what you did with the front of the IS, as I always feel that vehicles with missing colored bodywork along the front makes the front look fragile and improperly structurally disconnected. Also, you addressed the linework around the "vents" below the headlights (usually fake) and the same items on my 2015 Lexus GS 350 F-Sport are horrible! They flare outward and have no justifying air dam/splitter or body color at the bottom to visually "finish" the design. In your redesign of the trunk of the IS I wish you had addressed something I think too many luxury car designers do - make droopy butts! Mercedes, Audi and BMW are famous for cars with shoulder lines which go down at the tail end, with taillights low on the rear end. Raising the taillight bar on the IS would help reduce the Bangle Butt problem of the IS trunk lid and help properly fill in the sheetmetal below the lip spoiler, giving it more of a wedge shape like a 4-door coupe or hatchback. OK I'll shut up now. Very glad to discover you!

Absolutely agree with you on this - while I love the new IS design, there is too much going on at the rear. The odd and awkward articulation of the boot/trunk shape reminds me a bit of the E65 7 Series, which was a real dogs dinner of a car styling wise. I think your adjustments to the IS are a huge improvement :)
