running every day - run streak day 2378
Why do I wear 4 running watches?! For moments like this... I believe that in testing you can't go for one run and just say one watch is better or more accurate than another. I've been wearing 4 watches and testing them against each other for years now - I switch out the watches every so often so it hasn't been the exact same lineup as when I started but I thought it would be cool to show the breakdown of the watch comparisons during the Western States 100 mile ultramarathon where so many variables are eliminated because it was the same exact race. Let me know what watch you rock and what watches you want me to try next!
Wearing : Apple Watch series 7, Apple Watch ultra, coros apex 2 pro, garmin forerunner 955 solar.

Important note : the forerunner is designed as the "athlete's watch" whereas the Fenix by Garmin is designed for the long endurance stuff. From Coros, the pace series is the "athlete's watch" and the apex is the endurance one. A great comparison by Hellah but it's important to remember the intended use.

Taking data from Garmin's website : Forerunner 965 battery life with only gps - up to 31 hours ; Fenix 7x with only gps - up to 89 hours (112 with solar). From Coros : Apex Pro 2 - 75 hours ; pace 3 - up to 38 hours.

I should have added that the fenix 6 pro was the garmin that I wore for Leadville 100 and that one died at mile 86

Do you think it would be better to have Bluetooth ON and use a chest strap monitor as then the Apple Watch monitor would turn off thus saving battery life? Or do think it wouldn’t save enough to offset the fact there is Bluetooth?

Thank you for the video Hellah, this is good info to know. But I think it wouldve been good to also add the data at specific miles to compare the them too instead of just the time of battery deaths. Id be curious to see the differences in those.

Great review and awesome meeting you at WSER NOT A FAIR COMPARISON Garmin has a watch designed for Ultras and you compared the triathlon watch. Time to get a Fenix 7- lasts close to a month. Seems like that would be your kinda watch 😊

I think the Fenix or enduro from garmin is a better comparison for the apex 2. The corps does look cool though, the fonts and stuff. Maybe one day I’ll get the courage to move away from garmin, lol.

At the price point then it would be necessary to bump up to the VERTIX 2 from COROS with 140 GPS hours to compare with FENIX or ENDURO 😎

Apple Watch 7 did a lot better than it should have per Apple battery life claims. Garmin did much worse and it makes me wonder about the settings. Garmin claims an easy 31-34 hrs and the only thing that would really kill it is music playback on the watch. Looks like Apple hasn't played up how much their low power mode can help their non-ultra watches. Anything up to basically a 50k run or 70.3 triathlon looks like it could be done with a basic Apple Watch 9. It would be nice to know which if any watches you relied on for navigation and how you think they did on GPS tracking given the short distance of the COROS.

"It was connected to cellular, but there was no service out there".... Don't know for a fact with the watches, but my iPhone actually uses a ton of battery to try to secure a signal in areas without or with bad signal - so might have an effect as well.

People bang on about how the garmin watches have so many features, but my experience also was that they end up failing at the basics.... I got rid of my garmin as it kept crashing and the alti was horrible. The coros I have used also read a little short, which is a shame for those strava badges and pbs, but ultimately, in use on a race, being out by 30m isn't actually an issue when checking your distance. And knowing it will actually make it means you can rely on it.

The Apple Watch will drain faster using continuous GPS and heart rate monitoring. The 36hr battery is based on an estimate of a 1-2hr workout a day and the regular everyday use of other stuff. I got a series 9 and I still use a chest strap and low power mode on my longer outdoor workouts for it to last.

No mention of settings? Multiband, all systems, gps only? Standardizing the settings would give you a more realistic take on the watches. Not all watches use multiband as the default.

Nice run but wrong watches to compare. Would have been more interested to see Coros, Garmin (Fenix, Enduro, Epix)and Suunto Vertical. Coros would have come in last place in that scenario.

Somewhat random selection of watches. Not exactly comparing apples to apples. The Garmin Enduro or Fenix would maybe have been a more meaningful shootout re battery life etc to compete with the Coros. Nevertheless, you've taken 4 popular watches and highlighted the limits/best uses, which in itself is useful...thanks for the info.

If you're doing a video to help others out, it should really be a bit more scientific/fair. You can't write off the Fenix after one run @@HellahGoodespecially when others get 100 miles easily out of theirs. Were all the settings in comparable modes on these watches? Did you play music from any of them? You're a good guy bro ❤ Peace
