A trip through Scotland, England, across the Atlantic, ending in NYC- all with vintage attire? That's a giant challenge when almost nothing in your closet works! I started this journey about 9 months ago, planning and gathering supplies. The idea of a capsule wardrobe goes back beyond the 1920s and was often intended to handle trips or a major wardrobe refresh. And we're doing both! In the end, over 40 pieces were stitched and shaped for this wardrobe. Everything from shoes to suits to hats. And the best part is, it's all going to continue to be a regular part of what I wear!

I will now think of you as the heiress of the Rudolph Empire, because you looked like the rebellious, independent, adventurous heiress that travels the world solving international crime mysteries and snatching innocents from the Jaws of death while looking fabulous. I'm really impressed that none of this looks costume-y at all - it just looks like you have incredible vintage style. That, plus the ability to adjust on the fly for the weather and circumstances, really says that you've knocked it out of the park. This is such a great project and inspiration - thank you for sharing it with us!

Me, too, after an unexpected, but welcome, weight loss in my late 50s (from daily walking), I needed a wardrobe three sizes smaller, but I decided to revert to my always-loved classic style. Now 62, I have a beautiful wardrobe of mostly very high-quality clothes and accessories in my this favorite, classic style of my youth and stopped trying to force myself into the trendy local Boho/casual one, the best fashion decision I ever made. I am mature and I decided that I can wear what I love, it’s really freeing. I stick out in my silk dresses and skirts, blazers, etc., in a world of ragged black synthetic gym clothes, but I don’t care - I feel like Me again!🙂

It is fascinating to see the style of the era and how it varied from day to day. I've been weeding through my grandma's diaries from the 1920s for what she wore and there's a huge list I'm working on. I'm having a blast comparing my grandma's list to what you made for this trip!

Very glad to see someone I trust using Numi undershirts! Its a bit of an investment but I just bought my first one so that I can actually wear my hand-knit sweaters without feeling terribly anxious. This makes me feel much better about the purchase

I wear thin knitted silk tees from Amazon, they feel superb and are so easy to wash and quick to hang dry. I think they are less expensive than Numi undershirts, too, about $30-40. I often try to find a natural-fiber alternatives to those specialty items like Numi that are so expensive.

Congratulations! You did such an amazing job on this project for this trip and cruise. You definitely went above and beyond all the other folks I've seen prepping for this cruise, and you made a daily commitment to dress in period outfits, and not just for the cruise or the special events. Bravo! I also just loved all your outfits. They were beautiful, well thought out, and just fit you and your personality perfectly. I don't remember your outfits from last year's NY trip being disappointing, but you certainly did not disappoint us or yourself this year. Looking forward to seeing your next interesting project.

This video completely fascinated me because themed events are a LOVE of mine. A 1920’s themed cruise with your abilities as a seamstress, hat maker and shoe maker was a match made in heaven! I loved seeing what it looked like “back then” before our culture devolved into nothing but jeans and t shirts and very casual fast fashion. Your entire wardrobe was elegant, and even the “casual” comfortable clothing was something to admire. I know this video took so much time to create, (after having handmade every single thing in your wardrobe!) so thank you for making it for us. What a fun morning this was, looking at your nine months of hard work come together in a beautiful way!

Nicole, you looked utterly stylish and fabulous at every turn! Is there a more sublime voice recording today than the fine Mr. Wellington?! Seeing so much delightful fashion against the magical backdrop of the QMII, and then with the glorious soundtrack. My, my, it must have been an extraordinary experience! I'm sorry our utter unseasonal UK weather caught so many of you off-guard, last year you'd all have been well suited in your layers of wool, your scarves, and fabulous hats, it caught us just as off-guard I can promise you!

It ALL looks so WONDERFUL. And isn't that the way things go. I once went on a ten day trip in the late Summer. I packed shirt sleeves for the heat of the day, long sleeves for the cool of the evening. Sweaters for if it got cold. . . .and then it snowed 8 inches overnight. Everyone got a new winter coat on that trip

I really appreciate your comments about sewing for beyond the cruise, to create garments that helped you be yourself. It's actually rather challenging, as l yearn to incorporate more mid 30s into my day-to-day wardrobe because the style feels more like me. The challenge is to actually make the garments instead of just dreaming about it and wishing I had them. Thank you for being honest. And l think your choices were perfect, you obviously enjoyed wearing most of them. The smile said you were very comfortable!

What a terrific trip! It's always fun to hang out with your girlfriends, and even better when they are costumers (or vintage garb aficionados). Your color choices work so well for you, with your makeup and hairstyle. So much of what you wore reminds me of my New York City raised grandmother, and the photos she and her sister took of their best dresses and hats from the 1920s. She was an amazing seamstress in her own right, and made most of my Mom's fancy dresses in the 1950s. I'm seriously in awe of your shoe-making skills.

Love the after action outfit review. As someone who's done way more dancing than dressing up (with a teeny bit of sewing), shoes that are comfortable to walk in are comfortable to dance in. The only caveat there is whether the outsole is appropriate for the dance floor. I'm specifically thinking of outsoles of rubber on sprung wooden floors.

It was an uncommonly warm October here in Scotlands' Central Belt - I am glad the weather held up for you in Edinburgh and at Stirling Castle, though Glasgow has been APPALLINGLY wet this autumn, I cannot recall such a wet, damp autumn in years. And yes, the cobblestones around Glasgow University are very unforgiving when wearing high heels, especially when wet and covered in leaves.

It's amazing you went on The Queen Mary 2, she's the last ocean liner left. Back in the days it was the only way to travel. She's build to withstand anything really, not like a cruise ship. A cruise ship is a floating shoe box.

@@NicoleRudolph A tweed and tartan haul! If you ever get a chance to visit the Isle of Harris, I would highly recommend it. It's a bit of a trek, but worth it for the scenery and the tweed. A little easier to get to (in the it's on the mainland!) is Lochcarron Weavers. They do almost any tartan you can think of in the most gorgeous wool.

@@NicoleRudolph Clearly the way to do this is to partner up with UK folk at your destination who have been crying at the cost (or impossibility - a lot of US vendors simply don't ship to the UK!) of shipping from the US - and rather than travelling with an empty case, play postman and bring a suitcase of everyone's US purchases across ;) If you truly were going for the empty case option, I suspect it might well turn out cheaper to buy a new case over here in the UK rather than paying to transport an empty case - especially since if it wasn't packed with anything at all, it might be vulnerable to getting crushed by others' heavy luggage.

I cannot imagine 3 weeks including a cruise, walking through parts of Edinburgh and shopping (and visiting Bernadette) in London but only buying several ties and a sweater during the trip to fill in. I overpack for comic con weekends. So I can only be amazed that just excessive humidity in town and wind on deck were the only limiters to the capsule wardrobe. Makes total sense having the camera/tech and shoes in a carry-on for flights. I laughed when I saw the spread sheet, but it really is the only way both to keep track during the trip and for later posts on social media. How was everything kept clean and fresh? I also use the steam after my shower to de-wrinkle clothing, but steam can only go just so far.

This is fantastic and I'm super jealous! Fun fact, the Lindy Hop wasn't actually developed until the 1930's... 1920's was all about the Charleston (and the Balboa, I think.) Similarly, the music in the dance clips is not 20's music, but dates to the 30's and 40's.

Your comment on how much time it took to change your outfits on the cruise made me wonder, how did those fancy Edwardian ladies who worse 3+ outfits a day have time to do anything else? That in turn led to the very amusing mental image of ladies maids dressing women with the speed and efficiency of a Formula 1 pit crew.

Well, that was also the point, I think. Well off ladies didn't have to work for a living, so putting much time into changing was a means to show station in its own right. En then the showing how many outfits one could afford was just one more thing to prove the point.

Haha I've been travelling with only a backpack with two t-shirts, a few socks and underwear 😂 within Europe but still... props for being able to travel that much with these many outfits and shoes

Well, the subtitles turned Scotland into school a few times. An excellent vid as always, Nicole. The trip looked lovely.

Thank you for providing so many stores that sell the most detailed and beautiful work I’ve seen in a long time. I love the clothing and shoes. They just don’t make it like that anymore. My grandmother was a master tailor. She could measure you and cut cloth to make the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I have a beautiful gown she made for me and it’s a gown for a black-tie event. There’s huge binders with Polaroids of smiling women wearing her dresses. It’s a wonderful legacy.

The purple velvet dress suits you so beautifully. You look fantastic in everything, but you really shine in the dress.

I love how you mix historically women’s and men’s clothing it feels like I finally found my match! Also loved hearing what the motivation for this wardrobe was after watching most of the videos leading up to the finale. ALSO loved to hear that you weren’t cold because that was my biggest worry seeing all your planning

My favorite was the blue or green dress and shoes you made yourself and the cute pants outfit with the green band. Beautiful work on everything! Thank you for sharing your travels and wardrobe. Loved it!

Nicole, I love that you filmed each outfit separately! After following the planning and creating of your wardrobe, it was wonderful to see the entire thing in every iteration! You looked comfortable in every outfit. It's even better that you like and plan to wear every piece in your day-to-day life. That is very satisfying to me. I follow a lot of CosTubers and often think that I would run out of storage space if I made all of those wonderful fancy clothes that are so specifically costumes!
