For hot weather make yourself a summer corset. Summer corsets had mesh or netting panels so heat would escape and the woman wouldn't overheat. Also look into the athletic corset for doing hard labor or exercising in. Athletic corsets had elastic side paneling for ease of movement for women to do sports, exercise, and leisure activities. Love the video!!

What people dont realize is the corset is flexible and so it adds resistance to any bending you do in it...making it a work out.

@DocHolliday1851

@@vintagefiasco2271 That's what modern waist training corsets are made for. I've been corseting for a long time and do both waist train & tightlace. The thing with this is you can reduce inches off your waist (corsets can also indirectly cause weight loss) if you keep cinching, close your current corset, then buy the next size down, but the results are semi-permanent. If you stop corseting you'll eventually revert back to your previous size. This is a type of body modification. r/corsets is a great community dedicated to recommending proper fits, quality, & corset safety. Lucy of Lucy Corsetry is like the modern mother of corsetry. She has many educational videos here on KZbin. It's where most of us start. To be comfortable in corset you need to know your measurements. Have a corset match your rib/hip springs, torso length, the appropriate amount of reduction (we all squish differently, some more than others), etc. I also recommend cupped rib corsets for a beginner. Conical corsets are used with rib training, which may or may not be too much at first. It's best to find a proper fitting, quality corset at the start instead of some ill fitting fake junk from Amazon. Those are cheap shapeless tubes w/o listed rib & hip springs.

@@vintagefiasco2271 I should also mention waist training is a process. Take your time and don't rush closing a corset and hurting yourself. If you can *comfortably* wear it closed all day, then you're ready to size down

It’s always important to remember that for everyday wear the corset should generally be about the same tightness as a bra! Many people try to lace down, which (although for special occasions and not for too long is ok) will always be somewhat uncomfortable. Treat it like a bra and it will be as comfortable as a bra provided you allow yourself to become used to it and it is correctly “seasoned “.

It is true about the longer you do something, the “easier” it becomes. I started wearing a corset I made about 15 months ago. About 7 months ago I made a “Pretty Housemaid” corset. Very comfortable. I wear a chemise or cotton tank top under it. Also wear a long split skirt. I get a few looks now and again because I drive trucks with semis or B double trailers! I can be in my clothing for work for 15-16 hours a day, 5 days a week and I live in Brisbane with temps in Summer up to 35°C and high humidity.

OMG, I just found your channel and watching your historical corset everyday. I have to say I am so comfortable in my corset it's unreal. I started wearing it after I broke my back and they wanted to put me in an external brace and I kept looking for alternatives. historical corsets help tremendously. People don't realize how comfortable they can be and flexible they can be you don't have to tie them so tight that you pass out or can't breathe or whatever.

I wear a underbust corset from Orchard Corset. I wear it as outerwear/much prettier back brace. Update- since originally posting the above ⬆️ comment I have since acquired an overbust corset that has the same patterning at the bottom of the underbust corset. However for a bit of a laughable face-palm moment, I had two doctor appointments and the provider for the first appointment asked me if my overbust corset was a back brace. Lol. I told him that no, not a back brace as it is a corset but because of the steel bones and the structure of the fabric and the pattern of it it does provide quite a bit of back support (like a back brace) but with some bonuses- prettier choices of fabric and I gain a bit of curves plus I'm able to easily adjust the tightness just by adjusting the lacing to either a smidge looser or tighter and I mustn't forget about the wide array of colors of the double faced satin ribbon laces that I source from orchard corset.

In my humblest of humble opinions, corsets are more comfortable than bras. I wear a corset (mine are modern styles) almost every day cos I needed the back support. I don't tight lace cos I don't want to and it isn't comfortable for me. I also wear mine for sensory cos it feels like a tight hug or a weighted blanket around my torso. I want to add more historical corsets to my collection one of these days.

I was wondering what modern corsets you were using as I have been considering using them for my back as I have back brace from the hardware store that I’ve been using for gardening, diy etc and have found a big difference in back pain. But they are mostly made from elastic and thick neoprene style fabric and Velcro so not suitable for constant use.

I think another part of corset wearing is that tight lacing went out of style after the 1850's. In a book called How To Be A Victorian by Ruth Goodman, she does have photos that show the damage of tight lacing, such as physically moving the bottom ribs and making the shape be more of a pyramid and that it did sometimes cause women to faint, especially if it was hot. Goodman also notes that it only went from the 1830's-1850's and it was mostly done to young women who were still developing. When they found safer ways to gain the desired shape through padding and seeing the damage it did to young women, tight lacing went out of style and even sports corsets were made, although they were still corsets, just a little more breathable. Also, corsets weren't worn all day. I went to a ren faire recently and I tried on a corset and they made it so tight that I found it hard to breathe. I'm not sure if they tight laced ir if I just wasn't used to it. I had to catch my breath after they took it off. Like someone else in the comments said and what I've seen many people say, it should be worn like a bra and for support and posture (and, of course, of you like the Victorian style and to gain the shape).

8:22 When I look at this and then hear you say at 9:39 that today you laced for comfort so it doesn't make any reduction in your waist, I can't help pointing out to people that *not all those historical pics have women laced to the point of fainting* it really comes down to the silhouette of the clothes.

This shouldn't need to be said, but due to the movie tropes, We'll say it; If your corset is not a comfortable fit, or hinders breathing at all, it doesn't fit you correctly. Throw that junk away! A corset should be comfortable and supportive. The garment should help you keep an upright posture even while your back is relaxed. For this reason, yes, there may be pressure points on hips or ribs that may fatigue if worn for long periods of time, same as shoes and other clothing that fastens tight, but just like those items, a corset should first and foremost fit comfortably in a way that allows you to move in a relaxed manner. All the stereotypes created by movies seem to miss this obvious point, confusing a corset with a girdle. A corset is NOT a girdle. While both articles ARE designed to improve your form, a girdle compresses your body in an intentionally un-natural way, whereas a corset should only enhance what nature already gave you.
