This question is killing me. Why can't you film someone putting on a spacesuit? What makes it even stranger, she said it's an international regulation. It would be reasonable if some particular organisation wouldn't want to film it, to keep design secret. I wonder whether this law is real and is there any logic behind it or it's just a silly regulation.

I think your lawyers may have been a bit aggressive. Recently spacesuits got reclassified away from ITAR and moved under EAR. I'm not offering legal advise and you'll want to coordinate with your lawyers, but have them check the latest regulations on spacesuits. As I understand it, Human Spaceflight Activities not subject to ITAR or EAR are, "Physiological training (e.g., human-rated centrifuge training or parabolic flights, pressure suit or spacesuit training/operation)" But as always, have your export compliance team double check as I could be mistaken. They tend to err on the side of caution, so make sure they have really researched the topic else everything just turns in to 'no' which can lead to a far less compelling story. A lot of stuff recently got reclassified so things that were a no-no are now less restricted (although, still restricted so be careful).

Precisely TMRO, it's not like the Russians don't have access to the tech, we have to, by international law, share that with them. It's like nuclear tech -- they are allowed to inspect our actual facilities.. so 'selling' them nuclear weapons designs is kind of stupid since we have to share both-ways.

SiemkaSiema This is so the design of the suits is kept secret. I've been to the NBL(Neutral Buoyancy laboratory) when I was younger and since I had family there I got to try on one of the gloves. They told us that we couldn't take pictures because they didn't want people, or countries, to save costs and make their own. So mainly it's just the inners of the suit that they didn't want to be filmed.

You need to wear the thermal regulation undergarment with the cooling system, then the suit will not get hot and stifling and you will not feel as tired as fast. Also you could hook up a tether from the ceiling to compensate for the extra weight of the suit on Earth compared to target environment. That also greatly improves the experience. Hopefully the real Mars suits will have a separate body and head pressure compartments so that the ballooning effect is minimised and, instead of air pressure, use elastic band pressure in the body part..

I like this host. She does a great job. I've seen 3 types of space news hosts. 1.) The awkward know it all. 2.) The person who knows nothing and asks dumb questions like "how far is the moon". 3.) The smart person who dumbs everything down as if we are 4. Loren here, doesn't act like she is super knowledgeable of the subject, but clearly she knows something and she seems to get along with the interviewd/documented well. Not to mention she has a personality, and doesn't just relay information.

Working in a Spacesuit is challenging and describing the experience very difficult is understatement. It pushes our physical limits beyond. This video achieved that goal! Loren, I too have new respect for spaceman working in it and earthers who are making it possible. JARVIS in an IRON MAN suit is very very very very distant dream (centuries away). Fabulous video, looking forward for more! For me, It's like waiting for next Game of Thrones episode every Sunday. When would you release next video?

So how do you attach the suit back on the outside of the rover? You can't simply back up to it, rehook and climb back out the way you got in. If you go back into the habitat via another door and unsuit, you still have to reattach the suit outside. That would mean someone needs to suit up. It's a never ending chain of resuiting to unsuit.

This is very...well could be better thought out lol...I mean the trip to Mars is going to be at least 4 months, after that they will need rehab for months just to get basic movements...so doing basic movements in the suit at full strength on Earth is very hard. Its going to be nearly impossible to do movements at all on the surface of Mars...

These suits probably do work - underwater. The pressurization issues in any absolute vacuum would be ASTRONOMICAL. Ask yourself why they don't demonstrate what happens to a real human in a suit when inside a vacuum chamber. That MUST be one major phase for the testing. So why do they not even mention such a chamber, which is the ONLY place possible to perform this absolutely critical test? They don't just fail to mention a vacuum chamber here but ANYWHERE. You can't find such a video or even a reference to a vacuum chamber test, despite the fact that the need for such a test is beyond obvious.
@VedTraed
@VedTraed 6 жыл бұрын
Well obviously you didn't look hard enough, there's even this famous footage of a de-pressurization accident during the preparations for the Apollo program: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZabZZuhq7NqgaMm23s.

@VedTraed
@VedTraed 6 жыл бұрын
Why would I be suspicious about something which can be disproved after spending less than 10 seconds performing a Google search? Vacuum test of the Orion spacesuits posted last summer of 2017 (the tests began in 2014 so the images were taken somewhere between 2014-2017): www.space.com/37518-orion-spacesuits-vacuum-test-nasa-photos.html
@chrislantos
@chrislantos 6 жыл бұрын
First, there is no video available at your link. There is a single, vague photo and that's it. Yet there are many news/documentary/education videos about "space suits" right here on youtube. Not one even mentions a vacuum chamber test, much less films one. No word about withstanding extreme temperatures either. Any way you look at it, if the suits really can protect the astros and perform as advertised, then the deafening silence on all this is weird. Very weird.
@VedTraed
@VedTraed 6 жыл бұрын
It's an entire gallery with elaborate descriptions for many of the images, you saw that, right? And now it suddenly isn't good enough because it's not in the format of a popular science KZbin video? Also, I would like to call attention to what you wrote a few posts ago: "They don't just fail to mention a vacuum chamber here but ANYWHERE. You can't find such a video or even a reference to a vacuum chamber test, despite the fact that the need for such a test is beyond obvious." I clearly proved you wrong by linking an entire documentary on space suit design, where the vacuum chamber tests are prominently featured, and then a set of images with descriptions from more recent tests. Notice how much you've backpedaled? Are you even interested in learning anything about spacesuits? space.stackexchange.com/questions/15191/how-have-space-suits-dissipated-the-heat-removed-from-astronauts www.nasa.gov/audience/foreducators/spacesuits/home/clickable_suit_nf.html

Skin-tight garment, head to toe, providing constant temperature and pressure with a neck seal ... Inside of helmet a pressurized atmosphere ... Overlay the body with a protective, airtight, thermal reflective skin with sensors for movement and pressure. Then put your body in a robotic/hydrolytic exoskeleton to assist in mobility and strength - hooked up to the sensor net. Life support backpack and battery on the back snaps you in. Why does the entire thing need to be so pressurized with air if you really only need to keep a constant range of pressure on the body to keep internal pressure regulated? Why is DARPA openly working with robotic exoskeletons and NASA isn't? And is anyone making suits with interchangeable parts so that if one suit is damaged it can have that sector replaced and not write off the whole suit?
@oncementored
@oncementored 6 жыл бұрын
Good questions. Answer: Because it's all BS. Search for videos of vacuum powered street-pipe lifting tools -- with a vacuum so powerful that they can lift 30,000 lbs -- 15 Tons. In short, the absolute vacuum of space would pull with the force of an explosion on every square inch of any 'spacesuit'. Does the suit pictured here look capable of that? There is no such technology in existence. Anywhere.

Good point, but an emergency is just as likely on the ISS, especially on space walks. The ISS is supposed to be orbiting in a total vacuum in temperatures reaching thousands of degrees Fahrenheit. So the suit would have to be tested inside a superheated vacuum chamber. Such a test should be the central point of focus for any documentary like this. That's odd, because none of the many space suit documentary stories like this even mentions such a test. Weird. ...Suspiciously weird.
