Hey thanks for reacting to my video Tom. I was trying to play devils advocate asking him why he didn't just leave because I knew that's what people would say. Jake's a great guy, he was trying to put others before himself, enduring as much torture as possible so the company would have a good video and his friends wouldn't be at risk of losing their jobs. Really tragic, the video idea never should have been green lit in the first place. But the company culture there is if you speak up against your superiors you get reprimanded or fired.

Thanks so much for doing this video and interview. Incredibly well done and in depth. I appreciate the way you handled it and he was very genuine in the interview. I think he’s been taken advantage of, and his history of trauma leads me to believe he was manipulated with money, peer pressure and wanting to help so he wasn’t a disappointment. Would love to talk with you and Jake one day about the mental health fallout after events like this. So sad to see but appreciate you watching my reaction, creating this video and shedding light on a serious issue🙏

Wait people are making fun of him and think it's fake? ...I've literally never watched MrBeast/seen ANY of his crew or former crew, my first impression watching that video with Jake was that I was watching someone BARELY ABLE TO HOLD BACK his emotions! He did NOT want to cry. It seemed far more genuine than any BS I've seen on YT. He stuck to his own experiences and never went into hearsay and would stress if anything was secondhand information, he fully explained the actions and why he was feeling the way he was feeling and exactly what every one of the actions did to f**k him up. It was extremely coherent...

So much coverage of this, and I keep seeing people talking about Weddle not ”looking credible” due to body language, laughing etc. Feels good seeing someone who actually knows this stuff covering it, since all I could think is that everyting screams anxiety, coping strategies and being on the werge of breaking down. I get really concerned when some influencial people doesn’t seem to be able reading emotional responses like these. Downplaying this is such a hurtful and cruel thing to do when someone’s coping with trauma. Empathy folks, show some.

Yeah it's kinda nuts how many comments are saying he is acting or faking. If he was acting, he definitely deserves an Oscar. At first I was like what's this guy's deal? Then when I got the full story I was like damn, this guy was traumatized. You can really see the catharsis in him when he really gets going and it's obvious that he's been living through this whole thing over and over in his head from the way he tells it. The whole thing was really sad but I'm glad he finally got it off his chest and out into the world. Having to keep it secret in fear of getting blacklisted or sued must have been a horrible burden and now that it's partially gone I think he can start healing the actual trauma.
@e.nordstrom3892
@e.nordstrom3892 Ай бұрын
@@GoosterHiista Yeah, funny thing is everyone talking about him acting and doing this for money never considered why he’s not acting for money if he’s this good. Funny thing is how the people trying to break this down into the components they want to see in someone traumatised have me questioning their emotional authenticity. Humans show affect, emotion and mood, there’s an individual behavioural baseline that give us all our quirks and characteristics that all together forms a genuine response. I get real uneasy when people sit and question why he’s not behaving in a way that probably requires some serious manipulative deceptive skills to pull off. It’s suspicious to me. They engage in the whole “perfect victim” thing, that’s a red flag.

@@e.nordstrom3892 I guess people ironically expect him to act as if he was in a movie scene to seem genuine. Like a single tear falling down and a slightly strained voice or something. The whole animated and erratic body language, bursts of laughter (not knowing if you want to laugh or cry from the emotions inside), the coping humor, all point to authenticity in my book. I mean I've been in that situation, opening up and finally vocalizing thoughts that have been festering inside for years. It isn't pretty. I generally don't trust people if they look all pretty and presentable with their sob stories unless it's clear that they're mostly over them and not just fishing for sympathy. You can control your emotions to some degree but even that shows with a sort of stiffening when you try to keep them inside despite wanting to cry.

A sibling of mine was graped as a child and my mother believes one of the reasons her grapist got off without charges is because she never cried about it and talked about it very matter of factly and without emotion. There is no one way people react to trauma and believing there is can cause serious harm. Now I still think there needs to be more evidence to corroborate his story, but discounting it because of how emotional he was is not smart.

@vetreas366
@vetreas366 Ай бұрын
This is not new. The novel Battle Royale had a similar message, albeit aimed at cruelty for entertainment. The manga made after it (the version I first read) ended with a message that the main character who survived the experience hopes that the watchers (referring to those who watched the in-universe TV show as surrogates for the audience reading) could take their (the victims') struggle to heart and not resort to hurting others for entertainment in the future. What did we do? Well Battle Royale has a manga adaptation that I mentioned, two movies, a stage show and there were talks for an American TV show that kinda died down after Sandy Hook apparently, but really what the hell were they thinking wanting to make a series about teenagers murdering each other for the sick enjoyment of everyone watching them. In the US no less! Talk about tone-deaf. Columbine had already happened by that time, as did the other dozens of school shootings until Sandy Hooke and since then that keep happening in the US so... prolly for the best they stopped before they were called tasteless ghouls. So Battle Royale spawned an entire genre named after it of novels (think Hunger Games and such) and even video games (I don't think I need to name them), and it's not even the first of its type. Point being that we all took a look at a story about senseless killing in the interest of entertainment that specifically said that it hoped reality never gets to that point where cruelty is commodified and we said "THAT'S SOME GOOD SHIT" and turned it into a full genre of entertainment. A failure of messaging at its finest. At least nobody actually got roped into a real-life death game however. So Squid Games had absolutely NO SHOT of not being re-enacted in reality in some way, shape or form. I was honestly just hoping it wouldn't actually lead to people being tortured for money and it would just be pretend-play but here we are!

Honestly, a lot of times in this interview, Jake's reactions while telling what happened (and reliving it) were very similar to Robin Williams more...off times. Visible PTSD and visible coping mechanism of dark comedy being used to mask major discomfort in having to talk about what happened. I really hope his therapist(s) are doing their best to work through the PTSD and give him coping mechanisms to positively destress triggering times and situations. Drugs can help, but positive psychological coping mechanisms (and of course as you said, continued therapy) are so much better in these types of situations.

@@gi-go8575that's the sociopath part. People are supposed to have a sense of empathy that makes it difficult or impossible for them to straight up torture someone for profit and then not worry about their health otherwise. There's a reason why so many sociopaths are politicians and lawyers and why many are rich. Sociopaths are laser focused on their own growth and are manipulative and cunning enough to take advantage of people in any way they feel they can get away with doing it. Hence why they tend to get rich within this capitalist framework we've built.

I don't think he derives any emotion from it to be honest just flat out none. I think he's so locked into "having the best analytics", "biggest growth", "best sales", etc. that he's actually just completely insensitive to how the content he produces affects people. The thought that this guy was a human getting tortured probably didn't cross his mind *NOT EVEN ONCE* while he would go on site to shoot his daily scene. That's far more sinister and dangerous in my opinion. If MrBeast's channel would had seen better results if he "turned 1000 people blind" instead of "curing 1000 people of blindness", I guarantee you he would have considered making that video instead. It's just power hunger, that's how I felt for the last 2-3 years whenever I heard him talk in podcasts and interviews, that's where his mindset is. As soon as he starts talking business he lets the emotions out of the conversation, which wouldn't be problematic for most people but it suddenly becomes the biggest red flag ever when your business is all about coercing people to go through intense physical and mental challenges for money.

Above is correct imo. Man is either unable to empathize or he leaves it at the door the moment it becomes about getting views or likes. I don't follow him but I do know that there are early videos of him basically trying to learn how to manipulate the algorithm which are weird, but they suggest to me that what he eventually settled on was just what he found was most successful. He gives not so other people can have, it's so he can receive fame and praise. As Jake mentioned, giving to a single person is not real charity if you film yourself, post it and then gain millions either in direct revenue or attention/fame. Calling him content-brained is letting him off mildly. I don't know Jimmy Donaldson, but he doesn't seem like a good person to me. A good person doesn't have only morals, they have a conscience. Going to someone who is unable to sleep and getting them to run a marathon for content are not the actions of a good person. Maybe a good person wouldn't be able to notice that what they were doing was wrong because they were hyper-fixated, that is only human. A good person would not then go and give him only what he earned after the dude almost lost his mind during his video's production. Jake also mentions that he thought Jimmy was going to say that he hopes Jake doesn't "sue" but honestly I'd be surprised if he wasn't going to say "suicide" because Jimmy has good lawyers, and Jake has no way to compete in that arena especially since his participation was voluntary and he could leave at any time. But "suicide" would leave an indelible mark on the MrBeast brand and no amount of lawyers could wash that stain out. And Jimmy? Jimmy seems WAY more interested in preventing reputational damage than financial one.

I'm only halfway through the video so far, I don't really know if you piece this out together later, so to maybe clarify Weddle's side a bit? The company was becoming a bit phony with their videos, and he found the constant camera pointing at poor people odd, and also the weird salaries and company politics, but that was it in Jake's mind up to that point, Mr. Beast and co was a bit weird, maybe suspicious, but they weren't an outright terrible company to work for in his eyes yet. Also he didn't willingly leave the company he was fired, he was let go by the company, and yes he was happy to leave, but he's also in need of money and that's why he was "hoping" to get invited to a video again, he wanted to be part of them for the money because they weren't completely terrible yet or so he thought.

There's a difference between working for someone long hours for little pay. And working as a talent in front of the camera for a ton of money. He may have thought the camera role was exploitative but fair to a degree that was separate from how workers were treated behind the scenes.

A thing I think we're overlooking in regards to why Weddle kept up public appearances is that he's a stand up comic. Mr. Beast videos would be a great reference for him to use so even if he hated his time there (before the solitary confinement), he would want to pretend it was good for his other career, and it would be a good reason to do extra stuff with them after (even aside from the extra money).

When you are not financially covered you will accept anything even a bad workplace environment just to pay the bills, food and gas in your car and hoping one day you'll have it better so in the meantime you have to suck it up and sawllow your pride. I don't know it makes sense to me, no need to have a degree to understand why Jake went back to that hellhole 🙄😒

I always felt like there was somethinf off about Mr. Beast. There is a difference between nice and kind and a lot of the most charitable people want to go unrecongized and unnamed. I am not sure why if youre doing something charitable you cannot do it in silence. If you're not looking to get anything out of it then why talk about it and put it on youtube. Seems like Beast wants to have people praise him

Going back - other than the money, which when you make your living like Jake does is genuinely life-or-death sometimes these days - is also analogous to people returning to abusive relationships. Jimmy has a huge amount of power in the industry Jake works in; easily enough to blacklist him, especially back then. When a man with that much power and reach and money comes knocking at your door with hundreds of thousands of dollars and the opportunity of a lifetime (a solo Beast video) saying "no" isn't really an option.

When you are in significant debt and getting that money is digging you out of a hole, you'll do things you wouldn't normally do + possibly be taken advantage of despite your final position not being rich/comfortable (bc all the money went to debt) As well, the money he made was basically decided after the fact and more than what was agreed to ahead of time. That shows that they knew they messed up and wanted to protect themselves by buttering him up or being able to point to the money given as if it absolves the wrongdoing. He also discussed multiple other factors that contributed to how he was kinda coerced into it.
