Because the water in your body is in your blood. When you ingest sodium, it doesn't react as it doesn't go directly into your blood, it diffuses after ingestion, so the chemical reaction will not happen (I'd go to I.M's lectures any day)

What? Who told you this? Isn’t it cuz sodium as in table salt is sodium chloride (NaCl) NOT highly reactive sodium metal?? And there is water all over the body and in cells…we’d die otherwise.
