I mean, everyone has something that fuels them, for Michael, that was finding one person who he could fight against and disprove, the more personal the better. It makes sense considering he had dealt with parental disapproval, verbal and physical abuse and lacked the respect of his father figure (in this case his actual father) who saw him as weak in a way, not to mention, all that grew to become a threat to his "masculinity." It is also the reason why Michael spoiled his kids quite a bit as he had the need to show to his kids and himself that he was giving his kids everything emotionally and financially that his father never gave him. Probably also the reason his kids don't have his drive, his motivation, his skill, they just don't have that trauma and rage to tap into.

I remember watching FROM HOME (at friends houses actually) and I would be scared to talk trash or bad about Jordan!!! He had that much of a "presence" and everyone, even the fans, knew to not poke the bear. I was a Pistons and Knicks fan so I definitely knew lol.
