Great quality as always. Interestingly pric difference of i7 and r5 is around 20-30 euros in my country. I think that r5 is better choice if you want to build a PC, since you can find am4 motherboards more easily and sometimes cheaper. However upgrading from i7 to r5 would be only beneficial if you plan to use it in productivity tasks. I7 is still quite capable chip for gaming and I would choose either R5 5600 or i5 12400 as an upgrade.

You can get a Ryzen 5 3600 used for around $80-100 nowadays... I wouldn't even bother with a 2600 or a 1600 AF at this point unless it's like $50 or less and you're on an extremely tight budget. Not worth it to go below Zen 2 nowadays, especially since they've gotten so cheap and they're so much better than earlier Ryzen chips.

If you find a 3600 for a similar price, of course it would be wiser to go for it.

@kylemueller

@M Taufiq N I also would wholeheartedly recommend Zen 3 over Zen 2, but some people are on a budget. Also, I would avoid the Ryzen 5 5500. It's barely Zen 3 with such a small L3 cache and only supports PCIE gen 3 unlike the Ryzen 5 3600. Plus it has almost no performance advantage over the 3600. However, the Ryzen 5 5600 is an excellent CPU. It just happens to be about twice the price of a used 3600, assuming you can find one for $80. That said, if you can find a Ryzen 5 5600 for closer to $100 I would 100% recommend it over a 3600 regardless of your budget.

This is hard to recommend even on a tight budget... if you already have an old DDR3 system and you have to upgrade memory, MB and CPU... why buy a Ryzen 5 2600 when a 12100 (or 12100F) is so damn cheap and would blow the Ryzen 5 2600 completely out of the water. I think that's a crazy recommendation considering how affordable the 12100 is for a cheap budget build.
@RATechYT

I don't recommend the R5 2600 though. This video only shows whether it is worth the upgrade, not that you should get the Ryzen processor.
@wolfshanze5980
@wolfshanze5980 2 жыл бұрын
@@RATechYT "worth the upgrade" with tons of testing was my whole point. Why bother speaking of having to switch out MB, CPU and memory when something so cheap and blatantly more powerful than the R5 2600 (in the 12100) exists? This video should be 30 seconds long... "when doing an entire MB/CPU/memory budget build upgrade, should you consider the R5 2600? @@wolfshanze5980 That's... definitely an interesting take on the video. I'll tell you this though, these are the components that I had. And I (just like about 2000 people who watched this video) was curious about how they would stack up. So I did all of the testing, came up to a conclusion and decided to make a video about it and share it - simple as that really. Did you know that this is how they would compare? If yes - good for you! I personally didn't know how big the difference would be and I'm assuming majority who watched this video didn't either. For example I recently upgraded from an ancient 60 Hz screen to a 165 Hz one, and I'd love to share my experience about it to show how big the difference is between them, even though it should be obvious to most that the new screen is going to be much better across the board. Finally, you weren't obligated to watch this video at all, you could've just listened to the conclusion and closed the tab. *Problem solved* Don't get me wrong, your argument just doesn't make sense.

While the 4th gen i7 is still very decent, you have to factor in the limitations of the platform. You are stuck with DDR3 Ram and m.2 Nvme SSD's are not supported. Now I have seen some motherboards that had a m.2 Sata slot with 4 Sata lanes, but you still have to find an old m.2 Sata SSD which is very rare these days. So realistically you are stuck with a single lane Sata SSD.

Think i'd rather have x99 and 6950x than r5 1600 AF. Just about the same price now too lol
@RATechYT
@RATechYT 2 жыл бұрын
That setup would cost more though - the 6950X is being sold for about $109 on ebay, and a decent board such as the Gigabyte X99-UD3P can be found for about $93, which would already be $58 more expensive. At that point you're better off going for the 3900X + B350 or B450, which would in fact cost you about the same as going for the X99 platform.
@Trick-Framed
@Trick-Framed 2 жыл бұрын
@@RATechYT I can't find a 3900x that cheap. Otherwise that'd be a great strategy. Where can you find them that cheap? Not on Ebay, that's for sure. They average $250 there. So that would be $100 more all total. The route I suggested was the same price as a 1600af and a b350 at current market prices.

@@Trick-Framed My bad, the ones that I saw were bids. They cost $140 and $160 respectively with shipping, though if you want to buy one without bidding that would cost at least $220 indeed. It looks like the 2680 v3 would be an even better bang for the buck. It's 22nm's, has 12 cores and 24 threads and they're being sold for $25. Actually thinking of getting one.

The man has already answered you, but I will tell you one thing, at the end of the day an R5 1600AE, R5 1600X, R5 1600AF, R5 2600 or an R5 2600X are the same thing, there is not much difference between them if they work at 4Ghz or thereabouts, even if you take an R5 2600/2600X to 4.3Ghz it will not turn it into a stock R5 3600/3600X, so in the end those R5 2600/2600X are still closer to an R5 1600AE/AF/1600X. It is like an RX 580 vs RX 480, there the RX 580 has a little more performance than the RX 480, but it does not perform much more to convert it into a Vega56, Vega64 or an RX 5600XT.

It's a pretty thorough change, going from a DDR3 platform to a DDR4 platform. Board, CPU and RAM have to be replaced. Seems like, as you said, that money would be better spent moving to something more powerful for just a little bit more money. Moving to AM4 is a good decision however, because it allows access to many different performance levels at the same time, all the way from Zen 1 - Zen 3. There's and upgrade path, unlike with Intel's systems.
@EGOTheSpartan
@EGOTheSpartan 2 жыл бұрын
Better to keep the money, Stay with the I7, and wait a few more months for AM5. Depending on Motherboard I would probably buy the K version of this i7 and overclock it like mad, and wait a bit longer to replace it. I got a similar i7-6700k that runs pratically everything without a problem. No real reason to upgrade. Might wait till the AM5 platform that hasn't even launched gets cheap and buy second hand gear and a CPU with many more cores.

So as I rewatch this I realize that Zen had Ivy Bridge/Haswell single core ipc. Zen+ had Broadwell single core ipc. AMD has a superior implementation of SMT (They get an extra ~35% per core from it whilst Intel barely manages ~15% per core), so they will always be that much faster in multithreaded workloads. It makes the older Zen chips seem even older than they really are. It wasn't until Zen 3 that they finally caught up to and in cases beat Intel. Now they go toe to toe. With the X3D chips being the current de facto gaming chips. This in mind, no you are not getting old, but the performance of Zen and Zen+ is.

I would like to see how the cpu's especially the game lows compare with both cpu's running identical 2133mhz ram, I know they can both do that. The Ryzen's ram is TWICE as fast here as the 4790, that has to be an advantage..

The jump from 2400 MHz to 3200 MHz with this Ryzen setup results in about 6-12% frame rate increase depending on the game, while the frame times remain mostly the same. I'm sure the i7 with 2133 MHz memory would also have a 5-10% uplift over 1600 MHz. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpe0aGCMpbiWaaM

Replacing my 4790 3.6 ghz with the 4790k 4 ghz processor. Oh the 4770 non-k is great if you ask me. (And it will be transferred to another machine.) I think the 4790k will do a noticeable improvement. See how your 4790 boosts itself to about 3.8 ghz? Again, very nice. But the 4790k with its base clock at 4 ghz doesn't need to boost. (and when it does it's always over 4 ghz.) That's still pretty damn fast today and should smooth things out a bit. This machine is for games and playing video on a TV. Really couldn't resist going for the 4790k 4 ghz for the price. And a second machine will get the 4790 (non k) to replace its 4770. Not bad in the bang for the buck category at all if you ask me. These are Optiplex builds by the way. A 750 watt power supply in the 4790k computer WILL work and let the processor boost itself on that tasty 4 ghz base clock. Guessing that Ryzen of yours will STILL edge out the i7 4790k. (maybe!) Getting older, I appreciate keeping the older hardware kicking. And this build was pretty cheap. RA Tech : synthetic benchmarks like Cinebench R15 are full of hidden Intel compilers that always hurt nonIntel cpu-s in IPC....hence "better" single-core on the i7 4790 despite the fact that it's a 2014 chip. Today there are still some games / benchmarks that still use the graphic engine based in that era....in which Intel bribed many devs in exchange them integrating hidden compilers in their engines. Cinebench R15 isn't a trust worthy program due to above mentioned facts.

Now get a 4790k and oc the hell out of it and compare to a 2600 oc'ed at 4.2 at least, that would be interesting, I think the 4790k would probably take the lead in most games just because of the single core.

You would see a much larger difference with a more powerful modern graphics card. 5600x would take a big lead further and realistically be the what you would actually want to upgrade so if bothering with a whole platform change. Though AM5 is about to drop. More costly but massive lifespan.

It's time to upgrade those little buddies (4th gen) and to give those systems to grandma or to 8yo son. AM4 is the way to go for bang for the buck.
