J0shie Honestly, compared to a ton of other devices, joycons are insanely generous. There are only 3 different types of screws you need to undo for a shell replacement and you can easily make them out by size and/or color. And the ribbon cables aren’t too bad either. Have you seen an iPhone from the inside before? You‘ll see how much more sense those cables are.

To anyone watching this, a little advice: The battery and rumble might have a little tape underneath and won't come out as easy. Try wiggling the motor if you're having a hard time getting it out, and put your nails or something flat underneath the battery and wiggle that out too. Just don't pull full force and snap a cable haha. The rfid reader, that flat black thing underneath the motherboard in your left Joy-Con might be glued down a little, you might have to wriggle something underneath it. If you got a set of screwdrivers then you most likely got a flat piece of plastic that looks like a guitar pick with it. You'll be able to use this to do the stuff written above but also to poke the sides of the joycons to open the shell if you're having a hard time or are scared pushing it up might send it off flying (because goddamn those gamer thumbs got some power in em).

The reason he didn’t unplug any cables was because he didn’t have a matching center plastic piece, which he left as the default Nintendo black ones. These center plastic pieces give that matching color in-between your bumper and trigger buttons for a perfect match. Having done a shell swap before, I will say the trigger buttons will make you not want to see another spring in your life! Pain in the ass is a severe understatement. You can also buy 3rd party buttons in addition to the shells. I also recommend buying a tool kit on Amazon made for the Switch, as it’ll include tweezers and everything you need. IMPORTANT TIP: The screw holes of 3rd party shells are smaller and not threaded, so use the Phillips screws that come with the 3rd party shells to thread the screw holes BEFORE you start putting it together! Otherwise, you’ll go too rough during assembly with the new 3rd party shells, and if they’re the soft rubber, the screws will eat right through them.

Yes there were some parts I just had to quickly look up like the middle part because I had a red joy con but I felt more confident handling it because of how you handled it. People complaining you were going to fast are silly because you can pause and rewind. You showing how fast it can be done really gave me confidence for some reason. I have successfully shelled 2 sets of joycons thank you! None are broken or bulged. It took me 2 and a half hours the first time because I was super cautious still but the second set I loosened up some and remembered some the the steps before getting to the next part. The second set took about one hour. Yeah its not going to be 10 or even 20 minutes. Don't get discouraged just relax and expect it to take time just don't yank the ribbons hard and it should be fine.

Plus, I had to change the triggers which wasn’t covered in this video, but after finding another video covering that part, I came right back here. This made it so easy and stress free. Also, keep in mind your joycons have likely not been opened so the batteries, rumble motors, and the RFID (?) plate thing are all slightly glued in. I had a tiny plastic pry too which helped. And don’t forget the dust shields around the joy sticks, they just have a little adhesive and can be reused. This guy didn’t have his installed ...

I ended up using tweezers to place the screws in first. -The dangling parts (i.e. the dangling battery and rumble motor) is anxiety-inducing but as long as you don't pull on it even the slightest bit, nothing will fall off. This took me awhile to do but it was a lot of fun. I would estimate it took me about 20 mins per joycon. I also put both joycon release buttons incorrectly. Everything else works flawlessly though so i'm not mad

I was able to take apart and put back my joycons with ease after observing just once very fine and clear instructions way faster too than taking the ribbon cable off but do be careful not to damage the ribbon cables, I didn’t have much worry with them though. Great video! 👍🏻

Oh my gosh.... I just switched mine out in 15.....I have never done anything like this and besides taking longer to screw the screws in and out, I could totally follow this. I had anxiety doing the first one but then I just finished it and put it on my switch and it worked just fine. I am so freaking proud of myself. THANK YOU 🙏🏻!!!

This is amazing to watch, and super entertaining. I’ve replaced four shells so far, and the only thing I wish he would’ve touched on is that for a lot of shells, you also have to replace the battery tray, which in my opinion is the hardest part.

Wow! Great video, I very successfully changed over my shells in probably only about 20 mins with the pausing. I even had a few of the ribbon cables fall out, but was able to push them back in place. Everything works :)) Now I'm going to try and tackle the software and get the colors on screen to match.

@@katechapman2409 Nope! They still work great, the buttons feel normal and everything. The first joycon took a lot more time than the second; you’ll get a hang of it. Good luck!

@@katechapman2409 I got my brown shells on Alliexpress. They were really nice and just needed a light sanding on the edges and honestly it looks professionally done. I say check Alli and then look at the reviews! The only problem is the shipping. 😬 but... I ordered some custom joycons on Etsy and paid 120$ for em... and they were the same shells from alliexpress 😑. LOL

It took me over 5 hrs yesterday to replace my joycon stick on just one controller bc i have shaky hands and my kit came with a shitty screwdriver:( i accidentally got the down arrow button stuck so i need to take apart the whole thing now, so i might as well change the shells! Thank you so much for this awesome video i appreciate it
