J0shie Honestly, compared to a ton of other devices, joycons are insanely generous. There are only 3 different types of screws you need to undo for a shell replacement and you can easily make them out by size and/or color. And the ribbon cables aren’t too bad either. Have you seen an iPhone from the inside before? You‘ll see how much more sense those cables are.

To anyone watching this, a little advice: The battery and rumble might have a little tape underneath and won't come out as easy. Try wiggling the motor if you're having a hard time getting it out, and put your nails or something flat underneath the battery and wiggle that out too. Just don't pull full force and snap a cable haha. The rfid reader, that flat black thing underneath the motherboard in your left Joy-Con might be glued down a little, you might have to wriggle something underneath it. If you got a set of screwdrivers then you most likely got a flat piece of plastic that looks like a guitar pick with it. You'll be able to use this to do the stuff written above but also to poke the sides of the joycons to open the shell if you're having a hard time or are scared pushing it up might send it off flying (because goddamn those gamer thumbs got some power in em).

Go to Home Depot. They have a whole nice little box of bits of all types for electronics and toys and anything that has a weird, "non standard" screw head. The box is from the company IFIXIT and it's only 35 bucks. Totally worth it cuz I comes with a driver, a bendable extension, adapters for it and so many bits, you'll be able to open anything. Even things like toys from McDonald's or anywhere and your old nes game cartridges.

The reason he didn’t unplug any cables was because he didn’t have a matching center plastic piece, which he left as the default Nintendo black ones. These center plastic pieces give that matching color in-between your bumper and trigger buttons for a perfect match. Having done a shell swap before, I will say the trigger buttons will make you not want to see another spring in your life! Pain in the ass is a severe understatement. You can also buy 3rd party buttons in addition to the shells. I also recommend buying a tool kit on Amazon made for the Switch, as it’ll include tweezers and everything you need. IMPORTANT TIP: The screw holes of 3rd party shells are smaller and not threaded, so use the Phillips screws that come with the 3rd party shells to thread the screw holes BEFORE you start putting it together! Otherwise, you’ll go too rough during assembly with the new 3rd party shells, and if they’re the soft rubber, the screws will eat right through them.

Even if you are working on a damn car, with Screws that are fucking gigantic compared to small electronics. There is a 99.5% Chance, that you'll loose at least one of those screws and then you are fucked, because you'll either spend the next 500 hours searching for that tiny thing all over the place without success or gotta order some Screws online, wich will take quite some time as well.

You make is look so easy Update: I finally did it and OMG it took like 4 hours haha. My back hurts now lol. But thank you for the video because your confidence and how easy your tutorial is, I was able to do it! Some pointers I have is try not and touch the buttons when you are putting them circuit back inside because I kept messing up the button placement and I had to keep taking and unscrewing the board to place the buttons back. IDK if it's because of my shells but sometimes the screws won't go all the way in. I still have screws kinda sticking out a bit but only a little that it won't hurt me. That is the farthest it can go for me.

Amazing tutorial, relieved so much of my stress when replacing the joycons. The only critique I'd make is that you didn't cover how to replace the middle shell and just kept it in, and in my case I the shell I was putting in had a grey cover and I was replacing the neon controllers, so it would have looked weird if I kept them in. They thankfully were quite simply to do when looking at other videos though, and I just watched your guide the rest of the way since I just really didn't want to take out the ribbon cables lol. I just want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH!! a couple years ago I tried using tutorials to swap joycon shells with a pretty atomic purple. It was so intimidating and the ribbons were a pain. I ended up breaking the right controller and the other one was slightly bulgy but manageable. Well I came across your video thinking about trying it again and it just clicked. Yes there were some parts I just had to quickly look up like the middle part because I had a red joy con but I felt more confident handling it because of how you handled it. People complaining you were going to fast are silly because you can pause and rewind. You showing how fast it can be done really gave me confidence for some reason. I have successfully shelled 2 sets of joycons thank you! None are broken or bulged. It took me 2 and a half hours the first time because I was super cautious still but the second set I loosened up some and remembered some the the steps before getting to the next part. The second set took about one hour. Yeah its not going to be 10 or even 20 minutes. Don't get discouraged just relax and expect it to take time just don't yank the ribbons hard and it should be fine.

Plus, I had to change the triggers which wasn’t covered in this video, but after finding another video covering that part, I came right back here. This made it so easy and stress free. Also, keep in mind your joycons have likely not been opened so the batteries, rumble motors, and the RFID (?) plate thing are all slightly glued in. I had a tiny plastic pry too which helped. And don’t forget the dust shields around the joy sticks, they just have a little adhesive and can be reused. This guy didn’t have his installed ...

Did it perfectly, no physical damage to anything. Then I booted it up, right joycon was dead for some reason. Did all the troubleshooting I could think of, dead. Ordered a new right joycon off of ebay to do another swap, vowing to make sure I would be even more careful. After it arrived 4 days later, I took both joycons out and prepared for a swap. Suddenly my right joycon worked again. Currently 40 bucks down the hole. This universe hates me.

Hey so I also wanna take the middle part out. I got my stuff coming today so what did you do as an extra step to get that middle part out that he didn't do? Do you have a link to another video that shows how to do that extra step?
@inkusalters
@inkusalters 4 жыл бұрын
I got the middle part out without detaching cables from the board You can position the middle piece in a way where it'll rest on the table without the board on or under it. Use a tool to gently pry the ZR/ZL button up. Under that there's a screw. Just undo that and screw the cable into the new middle piece, put the ZR/ZL button back on by aligning the little pegs with the springs and just pressing straight down until it snaps in place. Super quick to do

Thanks for this fast and simple tutorial Alex, i've been doing Gadgets Guru's way for a good while now and at first it took me 16 hours on my first try, 4 hours on the 2nd round set, and now an hour on my 5th set round, which involved undoing the cables on the joycon circuit board and re attaching the cables back on. With this sweet tutorial, i can probably do shell swaps in 10 minutes now too.

Great tutorial, it took me about 2.5 hours because I ended up having to undo some stuff because one of my buttons on the left joy-con turned and then i realized the battery tray was a different color so it was creating a split color from the shell I was swapping to and had to undo those too and then I had to disconnect that short ribbon cable on the right joy-con when switching the battery tray over and that was a pain in the butt to reconnect without having tweezers LOL but was not your fault, I love your video and it helped out a lot and helped me understand the process much better than ANY of the other ones who make it SO complicated by disconnecting ALL of the components.

Great tutorial. My first time swapping shells took me about an hour. Some things I noticed as a first timer: -Get a screwdriver with magnetic bits. It'll save you SO much time. The kit I bought already came with a screwdriver that wasn't magnetic, so I didn't bother buying another one. I ended up using tweezers to place the screws in first. -The dangling parts (i.e. the dangling battery and rumble motor) is anxiety-inducing but as long as you don't pull on it even the slightest bit, nothing will fall off. I made the mistake of accidentally yanking the Slide Lock connector out but thankfully nothing snapped. Thanks for the tutorial!

I followed a stupid ifixit guide that had me stripping the thing down to its component parts. After I did the right one I was sure you could just leave all the ribbons attached so thanks for this. Tip for anyone reading this, if you do remove any ribbons whatever you do DO NOT remove the ZR/ZL ribbon, it's an absolute twat to get back in and the little grey clip that holds the ribbon in place is made of cheese!
