People know they are going to be judged by what they wear. What you wear makes a statement, even if its supposed to be counterintuitive. If there was an apocalypse and you were the only person left on earth, you wouldn't care what you wore. People say they do it for themselves, but it's always some sort of statement or portrayal that they want to give to other people.
