The tragedy of the song is that the young man didn't have a choice at all. Without proper paternal guidance he was destined to follow in his father's footsteps, all he wanted to do was support his mum and himself. He would have become homeless or starved to death without selling drugs. Where was the support for his mother, for this poor boy? This is an ode to an uncaring world, that leaves people with no choice but crime and calls it justice. Nobody supported the boy, nobody supported his mother. But we could have. We could have been the friend, the father figure, that averted this tragedy. One person putting his arm around the boys shoulders and understanding him (rather than the selfish confrontation of his coach) could have helped him achieve his wasted potential, one kind neighbour looking out for the mother could have got her the help and medication she desperately needed. They were alone and we chose to neglect them. And that's the songs genius. The choices are ours.
