Pavarotti said "there is a Pavarotti born every decade, and a Jussi Bjorling born every century." When one person compared the two of them, Pavarotti said "Please, I am just a human."

Greetings from Sweden! I just saw your reaction and would like to give you some facts. Jussi Björling (1911-1960) was as you know a world renowned singer. His way of singing O Helga Natt or rather thé key he sang it in, was what made it unique. About ten years after Jussi Björlings passing another world renowned singer Håkan Hagegård from Sweden, recorded O Helga Natt and was talked about as the only one who had been able to sing the song in the same key as Jussi Björling had done. Which version we Swedes listen to at Christmas varies, what holds tru is that many of us do listen to O Helga Natt as well as Ave Marie - and I dare to say that Tommy Johanssons versions of these songs will take it's place right up there with the two fantastic tenors mentioned above! Wishing you and yours A Happy New Year 2024! Eva

This is my favorite Christmas song. The first listen I didn't look at the images, and since you guys discussed them I listen again with my eyes open to see the images and they are beautiful. But the song, that is the exquisite beauty. So much emotion with chills start to finish.

Correction by the host. Pavarotti appreciated Bjorling and stated that he would liked to be compared to Bjorling. However, Pavarotti's favorite tenor was Giuseppe Di Stefano as written in his book, and there's NOT one word written about Bjorling in Pavarotti's book. Many interviews by Pavarotti here on YT where LP never mentions Bjorling. He does reiterate that Caruso was ''NUMBER ONE'' but his favorite tenor was Giuseppe Di Stefano, which is widely known in opera circles.

You are correct. But Neither Caruso or Di Stefano was as great as Björling in singing+. Pavarotti was Italian after all. That a simple guy guy from far of north should show the Italians how it was done was unheard of. Much like "un-italian" opera was unheard of before Mozart.

@@stege9979 Dear stege, Bjorling was an impeccable singer, accomplished in many languages and your enthusiasm is well noted. I do not often like to get into dialogue of who was better, as each tenor does reach us in different ways, whether being Italian or non - Italian. However, there are many reviews in the Met archives that give us a refined objective analysis of various tenors that have sung at the Met including Tucker, Di Stefano, Pavarotti, Domingo Martinelli, Caruso, Volpi and Bjorling. It does make for some interesting reading. This is a beautiful rendition of ''O Holy Night'' Enjoy

You are very correct. To me personaly though, Caruso or Di Stefano are not the same as Jussi Björling. I wish that technology could help here. But to Me....Jussi Björling is the Greatest Singer of all time. He also sings in Swedish. How would Caruso and Di Stefano sound in that language?

@@stege9979There was no reason for Di Stefano and Caruso to sing in Swedish. Caruso sang over 900 performances at the Met in a 19 year period to great reviews. 17 Forza's, 20 Fanciulla's, 33 Samson's, 32 Carmen's, 47 La Gioconda, 13 Jiuve, 41 Martha's are all opera's that Bjroling never sang. Bjorling received poor reviews and was disappointing to his favorite critic'' Claudia Cassidy'' in Aida at the Chicago opera house in 1958, ''capacity 3563'' as well as the attending Birgit Nilsson, who stated that Jussi ''sang a great Radames with me in Stockholm, which holds 1180 people was just right for his voice, but I found his voice a bit small for that role in the big Chicago auditorium . Page 259 Jussi, written by Andrew Farkas and co written by Anna-Lisa Bjorling. Caruso sang 91 Aida's at the Met to fine reviews as well as 116- I Pagliacci's which Bjorling never sung in the states. Mr. Bjorling's Cavaradossi-- his first at the Met was something of a disappointment. Though his voice was used tastefully as always, it appeared to be too small and he seemed to have to force it many times during the evening. His Recondita armonia was among his more successful efforts. 1938 Trovatore review by Jerome Bohm. The young Swedish tenor has not yet the heroic vocal attributes essential to a wholly felicitous conveyance of Manrico's taxing music. At the present, Mr. Bjorling would do best to adhere to such parts as Rodolfo in La Boheme. Cecil Smith 1949 review Manon Lescaut: From the start, Mr. Bjorling sang with exemplary plasticity of phrasing & sensitivity of nuance, though his voice was not in its most resonant condition, at his big moment at the end of the 3rd act his tone took on the brightness it had largely lacked until then and he propelled the music across the stage apron with a degree of force and passion that won him an ovation. Of course Jussi received fine reviews in Rigoletto, Don Carlo, Boheme Faust, Ballo and Cavalleria which are operas more suitable for his voice. Di Stefano brought forth a sense of intimacy with his listeners through his beautiful quality of voice, diction, and interpretations in live opera as well as in his Neapolitan Songs. My intention is to share information rather than stating one tenor is better than another. No tenor is perfect and they were all great in different ways, and certainly Bjorling's O Holy Night is the most beautiful.

In the southern parts of Sweden people doesn’t use rolling r:s. Generally however, in singing, almost everyone uses rolling r:s. It’s a dialectical thing.

So what about the pictures. They were ok, but nothing special. The special thing was Jussi Björling's, of blessed memory, singing which was truly sublime. It must be one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. The melody is incredibly beautiful and his voice was superlative. Thank you for your commentary though, both of you, as it was nice to see.
