Russian progressive duo Iamthemorning have released the first song, ‘Chalk And Coal’ from their forthcoming Kscope album Lighthouse , due to be released on April 1st/ 3rd June in France.
Vocalist Marjana Semkina comments on the song “Chalk & Coal is in a way a final milestone on the album. It is the darkest one and in a way it is very representative for Lighthouse in general, since it is a very cross-genre piece of music that eventually turns into something rather eclectic. Some dark jazz influence in used diminished chords and trumpet solo, glitched drums, all of that is rather new for us. Mood-wise it was inspired by David Bowie's "Sue (Or In a Season of Crime)". Lyrically it represents the final twist of the album story-line, the final breakdown.”
Formed in 2010 in St Petersburg Russia, Iamthemorning features pianist Gleb Kolyadin and the charismatic vocals of Marjana Semkina. The band self released their debut album in 2012 before signing to Kscope and releasing 'Belighted', their first record for the label in September 2014. In 2015 they toured Europe with labels mates, the art-progressive outfit Gazpacho last year.
As with 'Belighted', the engineering and mixing on Lighthouse is handled by Marcel van Limbeek (Tori Amos) and self produced by Gleb and Marjana. The album also features guest musicians Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, King Crimson) on drums, Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree) on bass and additional vocals on the album’s title track by Mariusz Duda (Lunatic Soul, Riverside).
'Lighthouse' is a rich and eclectic album, with echoes of classical music, the Canterbury scene, northern folk, jazz and electronic sounds. Featuring a story of the progression of mental illness, the album takes the listener through the stages with the story’s central character, her attempts to fight it, temporal remission leading to a final breakdown. Lyrically, the works and lives of Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath inspire the album.
Recorded across London, Moscow & St Petersburg, the core instrument of the band, the grand piano, was recorded in Mosfilm Studios Moscow, the largest and oldest studios in Russia. Founded in 1920, Mosfilm is renowned for recording orchestras for soundtracks for the most famous Soviet-era films, including works by Tarkovsky and Eisenstein.
The album artwork for 'Lighthouse' was created by watercolour artist Constantine Nagishkin who the band have previously collaborated with before.

For everyone who's curious, this album has Gavin Harrison on drums and Colin Edwin on bass. And it has Marisz Duda on it as well (the title track).

A trip to the darkest abyss and no return to the light in sight. Meant as a compliment! The music is amazing, full of hope and promises, while the lyrics takes you down to the low and obscure caverns of the soul.

Hell! I preordered the album because I love Belighted... and this is totally different. And well, I damn love it! I wouldn't have guessed you guys would choose such a direction and yet it's somehow exactly what I like, thank you! And also good job for reuniting Colin Edwin and Gavin Harrison, I no longer need the new Porcupine Tree when I can have both Steven Wilson's solo project and Iamthemorning!

I really like the different textures added this time. Definitely a step in the right direction, developing a much more nuanced sound than that of Belighted.

This is awesome and beautiful music and I think much more of their very best is yet to come! Iamthemorning need to prosper and grow if we are to see this happen. If you like this track, listen to the whole album a few times by legally streaming it - then buy it please. (Disclosure - I am just a fan, I have no connection with the band).

So I am led to the choice How many hours and hours will I sacrifice To find out this was all a lie I have never been fine Of all the iincurable suffering They only offer Some pills that would make me sick No Not again Not again Not again I'm living inside my head I'm living inside this hell Mess My name's emptiness And I'm turning bitter and sour With each passing hour Until nothing's left of me And though you see I'm not meant to be Until I'm deceased This won't set me at ease I am rotten inside I'm not pure No Not again Not again Not again You're not getting anywhere like this

I came across this music because I knew the drummer. It all sounds pretty good I guess. But the vocals are really stale. It's a song about darkness but you can't hear it in her voice, the way she sings is somewhere between upbeat and monotonous but certainly not dark.

honestly, i find the "certainly not dark" vocals rather impressive, contrasting with the atmosphere it's kind of making it even more eerie and unsettling - not exactly the words you "expect" to be sung with such a cute, soft voice.. (definitely not trying to say you're "wrong" or anything though!! matter of subjectivity, always.)

No I understand your point, sometimes an eerie and unsettling atmosphere sounds good, but this time it just didn't click with me at all. Damn you death metal, ruined my ears lol.

@@schizophrenicenthusiast did you hear Sanguine Hum? The vocals are not dark either. But I really love his voice though
