@cdrumh "A good drummer should be proficient with both." Incorrect. A good drummer should be able to just play music, regardless of what grip they use. There are amazing players that play matched and some trad. There is no requirement to use BOTH. It's purely a personal decision and both are equally valid grips.

There's a 4/4 uptempo style that Ian plays with the same principles described in these videos. The only other drummer I've heard who does it is Thomas Lang in some random cymbal-review video (see: Meinl Sand Ride). To me, it has so much power and I crave that so much. Does anyone know any other drummers who play like that? I'll be checking out Jack Dejohnette. I couldn't find footage of any of the other drummers Ian mentioned in this video who played like that.

GREAT playing!Traditional grip sounds lot better, than matched grip, when play jazz.Matched grip players from the past are Cozy Cole and Max Roach(he change grip to matched in the 70-th),Roy Haynes,Jack de Johnette,Billy Cobham and Bill Stewart now.In Europe everybody play matched, because matched is best grip to play everything. But traditional grip sounds........well,more musical.

Dont let anyone tell you one grip is better than the other. A good drummer should be proficient with both.

It sounds like Ian just threw Jeff Ballard under the bus.

Noob question: at the 2:00 mark he mentions "tying" the upbeats of the ride pattern.. what does "tie" mean in this context?

If write it out in musical notation, a tie combines the lengths of those notes. If you don't want to worry about the notation, you're just combining the lengths; so you really just play the first one and let it bleed into the next note value.

Wrong. As previously stated, that is an illogical conclusion. Traditional grip produces the exact same sound as matched. There is literally no difference whatsoever. To me, traditional FEELS more AUTHENTIC when playing jazz, so it is my grip of choice. For anything else, I choose matched.

As usual All his lessons are cryptic and never explains ANYTHING clearly. All is murky. Like his freaking attitude.
