Don't even remember this guy and it brings up the point how come Irish Republicans never took out a truly 'high value' target? Was Paisley so well protected noone could get to him? Never really landed a significant punch. Brighton Hotel was Swing and a Miss. This guy was obviously a 'soft target' just a useless suit filling up the benches, nobody missed him in the grand scheme of things. The Republican side was so thoroughly infiltrated nothing ever happened that wasn't 'approved' by British Intel. You'll say 'Mountbatten' but I suspect Philip wanted rid of him. The 18 soldiers that died that day were just the usual expendable cannon fodder.

Sad and unjustified. It's interesting his political views proved wrong over time. Irish government involvement in NI was essential to peace and his idea NI was an internal matter for London only proved utterly wrong and exacerbated the problem.

And your point is exactly why the IRA decided to have him taken out. In the context of a violent political conflict, an obstacle to peace like Ian Gow became a legitimate target for assassination. If hardliners like him in the Conservative Party had moderated their views and accepted the political reality. Then developed policy response that ensured everyone's right were respected and offered sensible solutions to the conflict in Northern Ireland, he would not have been killed. Instead, he chose his path, and it led to a bomb being placed under his car.

Any loss of life is tragic but Ian Gow should've known where slagging off the IRA would eventually lead to. See Ross McWhirter and Airey Neave and others for further details. He played with fire. He got burned.

I am sorry Alan, but if you do not stand up for what you believe in, then there is no point in standing up for your point of view. Would you say the same thing for politicians who stood up against loyalist thugs and got killed by them?
@alanberkeley7282
@alanberkeley7282 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnking5174 I never said he deserved to lose his life but he must have known he was taking a huge risk to himself, even more so by not having a bodyguard and listing his phone number and address in the phone book, and refused to check under his car for bombs. He gave the IRA an open goal and they took it. I'm surprised it took them as long as they did to take him out.

In response to all the people bitching at Paddy Ashdown, ALL the main parties contested the by-election, not just the Liberal Democrats - there was a Liberal candidate, but she did even worse than Labour and the Greens, though slightly better than Lady Whiplash of the Corrective Party, who did only slightly better than the National Front. Plus the Conservatives won the seat back at the next election.

@kmfw72 6 жыл бұрын
Newsflash: it's not written 'Gaedheal' in Irish since 1947, with or without the greengrocer's apostrophe. In English it's 'Gael' in the singular, and 'Gaels' in the plural, while in Irish it's 'Gael' in the singular and 'Gaeil' in the plural. Now write it out 100 times and if it's not done by sunrise I'll cut your balls off. Or, if you have none, those of your male next of kin.

@DV The PIRA didn’t do it. Gow had fallen out with Thatcher over the constitution however he was trusted enough by Dickson to be shown a copy of the Dossier that Leon Brittan “misplaced”and was threatening to go public However after failed attempts by the ever so nice bishop of Lewes on behalf of friends of HRH prince of Wales. He became surplus to requirements and was got rid of, no better than the Vatican really.

Stood up for what he believed in and never seemed to waver... But was foolish not to take his personal security more seriously, his address and phone number were known publicly, he never checked for for car bombs, all while he was heavily critical of the Republican Campaign in Northern Ireland and this came only 11 years after the INLA killed Airey Neave, who Gow worked closely with as spokesmen for Northern Ireland in the late 70's when the Tories where in opposition... The subsequent by-election was possibly the final nail in the coffin for Thatchers time in No.10...

@ 2.35 Bishop of Lewes “I was speaking with him late last night. “ just as the bomb was being planted. In light of subsequent events would it not be fair to consider the late bishop as a suspect given that Mr Gow had come into possession of a copy of the dossier (of Leon Brittan infamy) and would not listen to the Bishops “advice” to remain silent.

Persona Non Grata. How many times in this short clip the experienced newsreader mispronounces his words, like many within BBC news he had a better insight than most as to the thinking within the security services and has not the jitters because of what the PIRA have done , rather it is because of the realization of just what MI5 are prepared to do to their own. As much as I might have detested the man he was not a fool and if as is stated here he took little or no security measures this was not bravado or stupidity but rather the behavior of a man well aware of the thinking and capabilities of PIRA , no the late MP was in possession of information that was highly sensitive and such was his anger regarding the Anglo Irish agreement that he was deemed a threat and removed by those same dark forces that the Queen mentioned (threatened) P Burrell. I feel that I should add Gow was not motivated by any sense of revulsion at Paedophilia but by a burning desire to preserve the Union but he would not listen to the benign emissary from on high ,the bishop of Lewes (confidant of HRH Charles) and set about distracting Mr Gow with a phone call while his killers planted the bomb. Do you not see the common denominator here? Mountbottom , Airey Neave , Diana , Barry Manakee and Gow to name but an important few they all had knowledge as to the real identities and proclivities of the Windsors. Alas if only David Icke were right we could perhaps pacify them off with a small piece of lettuce or the odd white mouse but they are way more sinister. On the bright side though Andrew is safe as Windsor Castle.
