Yes, Ian is spot on as usual. ALL of the major wrongdoing covered by Leveson is already illegal. It needs a competent police force to enforce the existing law.

Good work by Ian Hislop, as you'd expect. "Speaking truth to power".

Ian Hislop: cutting through the crap one turd at a time. The Private eye does more for transparency than most governments manage to when trying to legislate for it.

It beggars belief that the only people so far who appear to be able to marry the facts that phone tapping, extortion, perjury, contempt of court, bribing/paying police officers, + politicians being dictated to by one 1 or 2 individuals in the media are already illegal, ergo operating outwith an editor's code of ethics, + conclude changing the ethics code won't make any difference are a sattarist and Hugh Grant is deeply worrying. Hislop as always spot on,although it's blindingly obvious.

Yes, it would be a good idea to bring Tony Blair and the current PM in front of the Levinson enquiry. How could they have allowed this subversion to continue unchecked?

I'm glad Hislop is the voice of reason, he is much more correct than Coogan's "regulate the press" approach.

Leveson praised Private Eye in the final report, but completely missed the point, advocating that those bodies that won't join his new regulator will face full litigation costs EVEN IF THEY WIN - which would effectively put the Eye out of business. Outrageous really and it highlights what an establishment tool Leveson is.

I totally agree with you. However, if he doesn't spell it out simply, directly and so that these points are recorded in the official record then they are open to distortion and misinterpretation. Well said Ian, well said!

I had always assumed Ian Hislop would be the most robust defender of journalistic integrity and free speech. As the editor of Private Eye, the UK's foremost satirical magazine, the Charlie Hebdo atrocity 18 months ago was surely his moment. Instead, he seemed to go lnto hiding, and only re-emerged three months later in time for the next HIGNFY TV series. (The Private Eye front cover the week after the atrocity was - shamefully - only a safe, lame 'satirical' reference to that softest of soft targets, Prince Andrew). I lost all respect for Hislop at that time. He is just another empty TV personality with an abrasive mouth and a thin veneer of anti-establishment cool. He is pleased to pontificate here, centre stage in a safe, cosy environment. But when the chips are down, you don't see him for dust.
