I used to watch Ian very early in his career at Eastville and Olly was new in the first team and ripped into Portsmouth from the right wing. A man near me turned to the man next to him and said “Your Ian’s been good today.” He quietly said that he’d “been ok”. You could tell he was someone who didn’t praise lightly but you also see he was bursting with pride at his young son. A nice moment.

I was at the game, 3-0 to the Gas against City. Brilliant performance by the Rovers that day, and a well deserved win. Some excellent games against our local rivals back then. It’s just a pity that they have progressed, modernised their stadium, and oare out of our league( in many ways) nowadays. Still rather be a Gashead though!

I had trial for Rovers at age of 15 and 45 years later I always remember being dropped off the minibus at the top of Royate Hill near Eastville Park, by Gordon Bennett saying I was not required anymore.
