Ian is such a legend, gained a massive amount of respect for him after this interview. Class act, with tons of style. Well done

Music isn't worthless. Owning something is what gives it value. I'm speaking for all the record collectors that still treasure vinyl

Interesting discussion re tourism and the entitlement of imperialism echoing Katarina Schough & Mekonnen Tesfahuney's work PRIVILEGED MOBILITIES. TOURISM AS WORLD ORDERING. However even the folk living, for example, in the 1950-1980s Communist/Socialist GDR, had relatively easy access to at least some semblance of European travel as described in Katja Hoyer masterwork 'Beyond the Wall : East Germany, 1949-1990'. There was a sort revolving lottery or honours system one could sign up for travel privelleges... Sea Cruises were initially popular, until folks started jumping ship at various Western port destinations en route and the jaunts were quietly moth-balled.

I will have to check out those books.

Katya Hoyers book is great - I'm learning so much! About a third of the way through so far... it's v readable and so fascinating... Stalin eradicated, via his 1930's purges, almost all of the German communists who fled to Russia after the Nazi's came to power...(his paranoia etc) and the few that were left come summer 1944 were sort of dropped into the Soviet controlled part Berlin to 'sort it out'... so much good stuff in Hoyers book.. @@AlexanderLaurence

3:30 Re: Strategies for song writing. Was it just ignorance of songwriting and music conceits that lead to "postpunk/indie" music in late 70's/80's/90's? Wasn't it a conscious rejection of music cliches and formalism? Songwriting in the 50's/60's was so much more sophisticated because writers could unapologetically borrow from an encyclopedia of blues, jazz, folk songbook traditions. By the late 70's, so much had already been done with the blues form, it seemed hopelessly stale.

Those people either couldn't play or just created an idiosyncratic style based on their limited skills. Many punk bands didn't do covers because they didn't have the chops or were tone deaf.

@@AlexanderLaurence for sure, but for many, there was no desire to learn traditional chops. It doesn't take that long to learn blues or folk idiom. For better or worse (usually for worse) musicians that followed Wire and PIL and Joy Division, the idea of writing a 12-bar blues, or soloing a blues scale was something to ridicule.
