One of the most criminally underrated films of all time, an absolute classic and Connery’s greatest performance. In fact all of the cast give great performances and the black and white cinematography enhances the whole experience. An incredibly powerful film from start to finish.

Films like The Hill are rare. When the production, writing, direction, cinematography, editing, acting, location, set design, costumes, extras etc. all come together in almost perfect harmony. It delivers the quintessential male passage movie. Every 12 year old male should be required to watch it...

i was a film extra on this film and was fortunate to see some classic scenes with Ian Hendry and Sean Connery and Harry Andrews take place at MGM Elstree, where the interior prison filming took place. There acting was superb, Sidney Lumet a master. When i speak to my grandchildren about my work, this is the film i speak about.

Hi Peter - great to hear from you and what a wonderful anecdote! I'd very much like to correspond with you further about your memories and experience. I am Ian's nephew and look after this KZbin channel and the website created as a tribute to his life and work. He gave me the army cap he wore as a gift when I was about 8 years old, so this film also has very special memories for me too. If you'd like to drop me a note via the website using the following link I can then reply by email. I'd love to hear from you - Neil. Contact via ianhendry.com/contact/

They never mentioned the last name of the RSM, the Doctor or the Commandant. The first name of the Sergeant major is "Bert" but I never heard the last name of the Sergeant Major, everybody else (except officers) goes by the last name, isn't that weird?

My old man loved this film! He had something of a hard time in the army, I don't know what happened but this film rang a bell for him. It's a great film, the HILL itself is a metaphor for all sorts of things. A mention here of Roy Kinnear who really excelled himself and proved he was not just a comedy actor.

Yeah this and Sydney Lumet's "The Offence" (1972), which reunites (if that's the right word) Connery and Ian Bannen. If you havnt seen it , it's arguably even heavier than "The Hill".🎭👌

Just discovered this Docu short, been an avid fan of the film ever since I watched it on tv many years ago. I recommend it to friends etc. but rarely find many that have heard of it, especially when I mention Roy Kinnear is in it with Sean Connery. That raises a few eyebrows! Would love a copy on DVD

Sidney Lumet's best film, IMO. A representation of an empire created by blood and prejudice. Connery was on fire and the supporting cast held it's own. Last but not least, the stark beauty of Oswald Morris's cinematography. I really wish more Hollywood filmmakers would embrace black and white.

A lot of actors of that era had served in the armed forces including Sean Connery who was RN. That’s why these films are so realistic, they know how to behave like soldiers..

Never knew this was actually shot in a desert location. I have only seen it once or twice. I did like all performances though, very gritty and sometimes rather insane (the staff screaming out orders all the time to prisoners when they were to be moved). And I mean screaming. If you didn't know from looking this is a British movie, you'd think it was a Japanese WW2 POW camp.
