Great video Ian showing the true importance of ND filters without portraying them as a necessity like some reviewers do tying to push them for the manufacture. Also great job of showing when you might or might not want polarised ND filters in different scenarios over water. All in all a great honest review of ND filters. 👍

Ian - this is one of the best explanations I've come across yet of the technical side of photography / videography in terms of the exposure triangle and how it's limited on drones with fixed apertures. Even though I know the exposure fundamentals, it's always great to hear it described in different ways. Of course, the same principals apply to mirrorless cameras, as well as DSLRs. ISO vs ISO - tomarhta / tomayto. 😉

Hi Ian, nice video. For me in Portugal during summer I need the ND64 for most of the day due the wide aperture of the Mini3 Pro. I have the Freewell all day pack plus a ND64PL and the long exposure pack. The long exposure pack has the ND2000 but I am not getting the same results as with my Mini1 ND2000 due again to the wider aperture. Maybe with a ND4000 Freewell can solve this issue.

Great video as usual. What if you looking to shoot stills and video while your up there on a bright day, do you have to bring your drone down to take the filters off before you shoot photos and relaunch?
@IaninLondon
@IaninLondon Жыл бұрын
It depends. Generally you can take stills with an ND filter on as well. You will only start to get the silky effect if you've got a very strong ND filter on that would normally be too strong for video. So if you've just got an ND16 or an ND32 then you wouldn't have to come down and take those off just to take photos 👍🏻

I want to use the ND 64. What should I put the settings on the iOS and there’s another one I’m not sure . if you can help me out that would be cool. And if you can help me out the settings for ND 128 I’ll be so nice thanks buddy.
@IaninLondon

Actually if you're using a higher value ND filter, just leave your exposure in auto. That way, the drone will work it all out for you and you won't have to adjust anything.

I’m using my DJI mini 3 pro primarily for photography. What set of filters would you recommended? Nd filters or nd/cpl filters? I like cpl for glare reduction in water etc., but I’m afraid of any distortion in my photos. I hope you can give me some good advice :). Love your channel!

You're just the Guy I've been looking for, or should I say Bloke? What is your recommeded flight height for Lava and a distance to waterfall? I will be encountering both here in Hawaii and I CAN NOT afford to risk my drone. Any other advice is well appreciated. Aloha
@IaninLondon
@IaninLondon 2 жыл бұрын
I would stay at least 250 - 350 feet above the lava if it's a large widespread lava field, as the heat will be tremendous. You can get closer, so say 150 feet, if it's a narrow lava stream on its own and not surrounded by other hot lava. Waterfalls are always risky as there is spray that can envelope your drone, which is never good. Stay above the waterfall and look down...... :)
@ScarboroughTourist
@ScarboroughTourist 2 жыл бұрын
I don't generally use ND filters at all; I prefer sharper footage clips. However, if it's really bright sun light I don't want 'frame stutter', (example when panning) which is caused by 'too fast' a shutter speed with a slow frame rate(25fps); I will only then use an ND filter (ND8/ND16). it's all personal preference. I generally shoot 4K/50fps and produce on a 25fps timeline; which then allows a decent 50% slomo; this being adequate for my needs.

How much extra weight do they add to the drone? especially the polarised ones?
@ClMa

Hi Ian and thank you very much for the video. I have a doubt, if you had to choose a long exposure filter between an ND and a ND / CPL, which is a good compromise for all scenarios, which one would you choose? My concern with CPL filters is precisely in the photography of wet things, I would not want the images to be distorted. Thanks for any reply.
@IaninLondon
@IaninLondon 2 жыл бұрын
I rarely use CPL filters for just that reason; unless I'm filming down into the sea and want to cut out reflections. Otherwise I stick to standard NDs.

Can you use auto mode with a filter to get motion blur? Would you recommend auto or manual?
@IaninLondon
@IaninLondon Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use auto but you're guessing a bit as to how strong an ND you need. With manual mode, you're adjusting and checking at the same time so you'll know you're getting the frame exposure down to around 1/50 - 1/60...

So it doesn't matter if you don't hit the exact shutter speed? For example 30fps you can't hit 1/60th but go a bit over like 1/80th? With a fixed aperture it must be tricky.
