We normally think of Andrew Wyeth as the detail guy, right? Blades of grass disappearing into the distance in tiny strokes of egg tempera. Now a lot of his work presents a powerful narrative. But many of the landscapes express a dramatic use of abstract value masses. Often with that expression of value masses almost the reason for the painting. They give us a rich, iconic, stripped-away vision of the land.
