I agree with the longer demos at least once a month - they are quite helpful. I often think that the 6-7 minute videos are a little too short - they seem more of introductions to topics. (I didn't want to scroll all the way down to the end to type this comment.) OH! Now I see I could have made my comment at the beginning, but I don't know where it would end up in the listing of comments.

Hi Donald, thanks on your feedback on the length. It's true 6-8 minutes means crafting something pretty tightly on topic and letting all kinds of related ideas hung. I suppose until another later one. At the same time I hardly ever have time to watch something a good deal longer. What's that line about public speaking, close while they still want more. Not sure. All the best.

This Is wonderful, Ian. Artists are mainly right brained, as you know, and most of us learn by watching something being done in order to learn. My school days were a mess as I couldn't memorize anything and when History came around, I would be busy setting a scene with everything that was said and so basically, learned nothing!! I couldn't absorb the common word, I had to SEE IN MY MIND what the History teacher was talking about. I was in tears in every class as the teacher would get so far ahead of me that I couldn't follow him.. Since my time (the 60's in high school), they have discovered that everyone does not learn the same and I hope that has helped people like me who learn by watching how it's done and not by listening to how it's done. That is how I learned how to use a computer...I had someone come in and show me what could be done on a computer and then I just dove right into it and mastered it! So Kudos to you for this, and I hope you do many, many more demonstrations!! THANK YOU!!!

I was enthralled with your way of mixing greens! I need to watch this over several times, hope I can save this! I noticed the composition , vertical , horizontal and diagonal , is Always on the right side of the canvas. Do yo , or can you put the vertical on the left, etc.? I don't see why not!
@pamelahulland84393 жыл бұрын
According to Stefan Baumann, in western cultures, because we write from left to right, our eyes are comfortable going into the painting from the left and then rest on the right, other cultures such as Arabic who write from right to left have the opposite degree of comfort. It’s a natural progression from cultural training.

I noticed that because I’m left handed I have a tendency to put my focal point on the right hand side of my compositions. This is another fabulous demo! A friend sent me a link to one of your demos and I have been hooked, ever since. I am trying to catch up, not wanting to miss a single episode! You could say that I am "hooked": rod, line & sinker! LOL I have been trying for years to paint faster,...more effectively. Though I love oil painting, the process just seemed so long and tedious but your method seems so much more direct & beautiful. By the way, I love your bright colours! I learned oil painting from an old master who was 93 yrs old when she started teaching me, but she was "frustrated by her slow output" (an amazing- one 18" x 24" per week) and stiff style. I really like the way you explain, clearly & simply, throughout the videos even while painting! and you post your reference images in the frame, as well as showing us your palette! To me, it is as though you are showing us a glimpse into your painting soul! Thank you for sharing! You share so well (in quality and content)!

Ian, these long instruction films are worth their weight in gold. Please, we need lots and lots. Went straight to the shop and bought chrome oxide green and cadmium orange and am training every day with scenery around the village to get to grips with the greens and how to combine them into an interesting structure that make sence on the picture plane (first all I saw was just GREEN and a trillion leaves and grasses - my head spinning ;b). But we're learning, we all do. Thanks, Ian, for your didactic skills, patience and insightful sharing to us all!!!
